Title: WXV Awards Week 2019
Post by: Purple 77 on August 18, 2019, 01:36:32 PM
Hey all!

Previously, we've had one wonderful night dedicated to recognising the achievements of players, coaches and teams alike for the season gone by.

But, as WXVs has progressed, our appreciation of this great comp has progressed too! We love Worlds for its enduring ability - it's comforting place in the background of our lives - and as such I'll be unveiling our seasons achievements throughout THIS WEEK rather than in one big night.

In this way, the whole community can engage, rather than only those who are available in one night :)

I'll begin the Jim Stynes Medal count from TOMORROW NIGHT, and nightly until we have recognised:
- The 2019 Jim Stynes Medalist
- Coach of the Year
- Rising Star
- Coaches Award
- All-Worlds team
- All-Reserves team

2014: Gary Ablett Jnr
2015: Todd Goldstein
2016: Patrick Dangerfield
2017: Patrick Dangerfield
2018: Tom Mitchell

Thank you everyone to an amazing season of WXVs, I look forward to sharing the awards with you throughout the week  :)

Another epic year deserves epic recognition.

We've had teams take the next step into finals, games won on resting bonuses, mental demons defeated, giants fall to the bottom 4, bottom 4 teams breaking out of the cellar, a mid-year coach resignation, spud players turn into superstars, unbreakable lifelong affinities forged with players (both positive and negative), and above all else, a whole lotta fun.

So please join me in recognising the year that was this week, pull up a chair, the tab is open all week :)

Let's start the count!

And to close off the first night, I present to you the much acclaimed All-Reserves team!

(min 9 games, sorted by average score in reserve games only)

D: Tom Clurey (75.69 from 13, La Plata), Darcy Gardiner (71.77 from 13, Imperial), David Astbury (70.89 from 9, Siberia), David Mackay (68.83 from 12, Durban)
M: Jordan Dawson (82.56 from 9, Mumbai), Reece Conca (69.07 from 15, Durban), Riley Knight (64.67 from 12, Mumbai), Noah Answerth (64.27 from 11, Mumbai)
R: Jordan Roughead   (69.78 from 9, Imperial)
F: Brody Mihocek (82.73 from 11, Yuzawa), Nick Holman (71.67 from 9, Yuzawa), Paul Puopolo (70.69 from 13, Guadalajara), Dean Kent (69.2 from 10, Durban)
I: Cameron Zurhaar (68.75 from 12, Pyongyang), Peter Wright (68.08 from 13, Windsor)

C: Brody Mihocek (Yuzawa)
VC: Jordan Dawson (Mumbai)

There are some bloody handy averages in there! Durban has 3 players in the team, as does Mumbai. Mihocek would have to be one of the strongest All-Reserve captains too I reckon!

Day 1 is behind us, but fresh reports have surfaced regarding the aftermath:

- Dane Swan has led an almighty binge amongst the star players of the comp, leading them straight the 'Sausage' Mumford's place and again to Brayden Crossley's.
- Cape Town coach GoLions was charged for assault where he retaliated against opposition coaches who were repeating the words "Abductor? I hardly know her!" over and over again...
- Berlin's coaching staff have yet to make contact. On attempts to contact the embattled club, the song "Sound of Silence" is played in the voicemail. However, it could be worse... Beijing's is REM's "Everybody hurts"

What will Day 2 bring? What does Day 2 know? Do they know things? Let's find out!

Only two 140+ scores this week, so it was a good week to post a ton if you were a Brad Sheppard, or Rhys Stanley. One also gets a feeling Sam Walsh will be getting plenty more JS votes in his career!

Aaaannnnnddd we're back!

After Day 2:
- Holz could be found talking to Alastair Clarkson, despite Clarkson clearly looking uncomfortable with the approach
- HP & Daz have finally made it around to talking to everyone, and have collapsed at their assigned seating next to Lenny Hayes and Jarryd Roughead.
- Whilst Boomz & JROO can be seen in the dimly lit corner, speaking in hushed tones whilst enjoying a cigar and a whiskey

Lets resume proceedings!

It's Day 4, and the boys are pulling up s... not good:
- Jukes & PB have managed to comfort a wicked hangover with one of their 5 panadols, but RD is refusing to use one.
- iZ, FTC and Torp have begun looking at their watches, feeling anxious about the study they'd otherwise be procrastinating around.
- Fresh from announcing their retirement, co-coaches Ricochet & elephants were greeted by a wave of applause.
- Roaming BT made way to JB, and asked him to describe Ricophants in 25 words or less. I'm told he did it in 3.

So in that spirit, let's do it!

In previous years, the All-Worlds team was put to vote by the community. However, this year I have determined the All-Worlds team because its kinda clear for the most part, except for the bottom 5 players or so.

To qualify for the All-Worlds team, you'd have needed to play at least 12 senior games. The following analysis has been done from the 17 H&A season rounds, inclusive of reserves scores (this is consistent with previous years).

Defenders
I produced a rank for each defender according to the total points they scored compared to all other defenders (rank 'X'). Separately, I produced a rank for each defender according to their average points per game (rank 'Y').

I multiplied X and Y together, to produce Z. I then sorted 'Z' by smallest to largest. The top 4 defenders made the All-Worlds team.

For example, Shannon Hurn had the 2nd highest average for all defenders. X = 2.
But, he had the 8th highest total points scored. Y = 8.
Z = 2 x 8 = 16

16 was the 3rd lowest score, meaning he is named as D3.

This method thus takes into account both games played and points per game.

Midfielders, Rucks and Forwards
See 'Defenders'

Utilities
See 'Defenders', except all players are compared to each other regardless of position.

Captain & Vice Captain
Were those with the best overall ranking. Don't worry, this was clear no matter what angle you cut it.

Alrighty! Into the final day!

Ah, the final 3 rounds. They were all 'cluster' games, where everyone played a team from their 'third' of the ladder in 2018.

We learned many things, none bigger than the final make-up of the 8. The exact placings would have huge ramifications, say, for example, an elimination final defeat or a grand final representation. Some coaches are acutely aware of this, and have rocked up to the final day of the count in... varying shapes and sizes:
- UTM has rocked up fairly well, all things considering. He'd be thinking the addition of last years Jim Stynes medalist Tom Mitchell will be the difference to Pacific's existing list.
- Koop has been spotted observing the players that have rocked up, and introducing them all to Sam Lloyd at every opportunity.
- Ringo - sporting a ham radio and an ear piece that we can only assume is tuned into the ashes broadcast - briefly received accusing stares after he was seemingly booing some key speakers. However, he assured he was simply shouting "Boo-urns" moments before the Hazlewood dismissal.
- And finally, in a moment of madness, Cairo co-coach ML - whom did not convince the bouncer that he was indeed on the list - needed to separate Nige & Andrew McGrath in a verbal scuffle that begun with Nige saying "Callmmmm down Nige-ely diddly diddly diddly. They did their best, shoddily-iddly-iddly-diddly... gotta be *nice*, hostily-iddly-diddly-iddly.. AW HELL, DIDDLY-DING-DONG CRAP! CAN'T YOU MORONS DO ANYTHING RIGHT?"

Moving on, who will take home Jimmy? Max, fresh from his would-be GF winning double-ton? The currently deflated Neale & Grundy? Or will Cunnington upset? All will revealed!

After Round 15

Toronto defeated New Delhi this day, in what would be a grand final preview. Can they win again today?

Crucial votes won by Grundy & Gawn, with the latter halting any charge from Cunnington.

It's now time to announce the WXV Rising Star!

As you all know, I asked everyone to vote on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis out of the weekly Rising star nominations. Well, the votes are in, and the 2019 WXV Rising Star Award goes to...

SAM WALSH (MEXICO CITY)

In what was probably an obvious result, Sam Walsh produced one of the all time best first-seasons by a teenager, playing all 17 senior games for Mexico City at an whopping average of 91! A steal at Pick 3 of the draft, congratulations to both Walsh and Mexico City!

Walsh edged out almost equally impressive Connor Rozee (Moscow), who may turn out to be the bigger steal of last years draft at Pick 11.

Jarryd Lyons you magnificent b*stard.

Max Gawn takes a Jim Stynes medal winning 3 votes!!! Ah, what a bloody pleasure! What would be even better? Not having to share it with that scrub Grundy. Come on Maxy, one more game.

Josh Dunkley though is certainly one to watch out for in future years, who has put together a fantastic 2nd half of the year.

Toronto top score for the season, with Macrae only warming up. 22 games with that form will see plenty of Jim Stynes medals for him in the future.

It is beautifully fitting that Max Gawn is the 2019 Jim Stynes medalist!

The Berlin ruck has been a superstar of the competition for 2 years now, and if for just a little bit of luck, he would have double-tonned his way to a Berlin premiership. With a strong affinity to Jim Stynes himself, Max Gawn does his memory justice as both someone we admire, and just an out-an-out gun.

And to close off the week, I proudly present the 2019 WXV Coach of the Year!

With a whopping 9 nominations for the award (and could have easily been more), I asked everyone to vote on a 3-2-1 basis to determine 2019 WXV Coach of the Year.

Pleasingly, everyone received votes from at least 3 different people! But there were two coaches that featured prominently. Once coaching alongside each other, the top 2 have now forged an epic rivalry deemed 'Karen v Kate'.

It is my pleasure to announce that the WXV coach of the year is...

GoLions (Cape Town)!

After producing just a 2 win year and the wooden spoon last year, "GL" pursued an aggressive trading strategy to boost Cape Town ("Kate") up the ladder, and he did just that. Adding 7 wins on his 2 win 2018 total, Cape Town was *this* close to making the finals, and they may have if it weren't for number 1 ruck Toby Nankervis going down with an injury. Cape Town are well placed to continue their upward trajectory, which is a testament to GLs ability and competitive drive.

Congratulations GL!

Thank you to everyone for taking part in WXVs in 2019 :)

The coaches award voting was particularly indicative I reckon. There are so many personalities and fantasy talent amongst us, which is what makes WXVs such an enjoyable place.

Whilst I may continue to litter this thread with some stats, I encourage everyone to follow the conclusion of the WXV Grand Final :)

Cheers all!

The WXV Coaches Award

I asked everyone to nominate a player on their list - their club coaches award winner - and for everyone to vote on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis on these players.

After tallying everyones votes, the WXV Coaches Award winner goes to...

Rowan Marshall (Toronto)!

After establishing himself as the #1 St Kilda ruck, Rowan Marshall improved his average from 62.8 from 10 games, to 110 from almost every game of the season! He added the cream on top of a quality Toronto list.
