Samson Ryan has been given the lead ruck role in the last couple of weeks in the continued absence of Toby Nankervis through injury. His previous stints in the seniors were mostly in a forward/ruck role, where he showed his rawness and not much else, and his current run has not announced to the world that he is ready to step up as a best 23 player, at least not in such a pivotal position. Like almost all tall players, he takes five years in the system to really hit his straps, not just because of the extra muscle needed on spindly frames but the craft required for top-level rucking.
