NEWS: Sydney Coach John Longmire told reporters on Monday "Reid is an important part of it, but we're hopeful Shane Mumford will come back into the team this week. If he does, we've still got some height in our forward line, which we think has been really important for us over the last couple of months. If 'Mummy' trains the rest of the week and pulls up well, obviously he'll come straight back into the team. Before his injury he was starting to hit some really good form. Hopefully he only misses the one week and picks up that form straight away."

NEWS: Mumford has been cleared of any major damage to his knee but seems highly unlikely to play against Gold Coast in Round 18 at this stage. Sydney coach John Longmire said "Shane is feeling pretty good today and is walking around the club quite freely but we will continue to monitor his progress throughout the week. Bone bruising is a really tricky injury to assess and recovery time varies from case to case. At this stage, Shane is unlikely to face the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night."

NEWS: Mumford was subbed out of Round 17 at half time with a knee injury. The Swans will have a nervous wait on scans to reveal the extent of the injury. Mumford landed awkwardly in a ruck contest and immediately grabbed at his knee. He was able to make his way to the bench unassisted.

NEWS: 23 hit outs and 7 possessions with 4 marks and 0.1... left knee sore in Q2 after he trod on Kennedy's foot. Subbed off at HT.

NEWS: If you have held on to Mumford through the injury, or you have upgraded recently, it's looking likely his dividend will be paying out in the run home to the finals. Team mate Mike Pyke recently said "He didn't have the pre-season he would have wanted to have had. His knee was crumbling away or something along those lines, so he didn't get the start he would have liked. But he has certainly played himself into some form now. He really puts pressure on guys and runs them hard and works them really hard in the contest, so he sets a standard for the club in the ruck division and we just try to follow him."

NEWS: Mumford said on Tuesday at the launch of the club's new environment program for schools "My body's pretty much right now - but the match fitness is something you can't emulate in training. Hopefully, I'll be back to my best in the next few weeks ... it usually takes five or six games under your belt." Mumford has played 2 senior games since returning from a back injury which was infected, and does not believe he will be at his best in Round 13 against the Cats on Friday night, but his best is coming.

NEWS: Swans' physiotherapist Matt Cameron said "He's up and running now and he's working on his speed and so on so we're bringing him back into train at the end of this week. He's going to do some more agility today and he's just got to get the rest of his body used to what training will demand of him. If any of us had a few weeks off we'd find stepping up makes the rest of your body sore. He'll be due to start training at the end of this week and then he's going to need some training to prepare him for the rigours of a game."

NEWS: Sydney Swans general manager of football Dean Moore said "The infection in Shane's back did not respond to treatment as we had hoped, so he underwent a simple procedure to remove it. He is recovering well and we expect him to resume training in around seven days, with a view to have him available for selection in the next three to four weeks."

NEWS: Mumford is still suffering from infection and Club physiotherapist Matt Cameron said "We were able to find the source of that pain which was some infection brewing close down to a joint in his back, which is probably due to an injection a couple of weeks before then. He's been on antibiotics and things look like they're under control. He'll be assessed again later this week with a scan and depending on that result we'll be able to determine whether he is able to train and then prepare to play."
