NEWS: Smith had an impressive debut in Round 1, collecting 13 possessions and 4 goals for 79DT/102SC before being subbed out of the game at 3/4 time with cramp. Coach Brendan McCartney said "I would have preferred he didn't go into a full-body cramp ... but that probably indicative (and) reflective of how hard he worked and how much he committed to the game. You don't anticipate that a young guy is going to come in and kick four goals. Just his contests in other areas of the ground were terrific."

NEWS: Smith is up for the challenge. Players like Smith rarely fail at AFL level. He is as tough as nails, puts his head over the ball and gets it. Injury does not worry him. He has been mentored by Matthew Boyd and Liam Picken, which couldn't hurt either. Smith recently said "That's how I've grown up my whole life. I've pretty much always been in and under, putting my head over it ... if you get hurt, you get hurt."

NEWS: Smith is as tough as nails and puts his head over the ball every time. He will play through the midfield, but can also push forward when needed and kick goals. He has excellent endurance and will no doubt become a tackling machine. His body is ready to go at AFL level now and the only question mark is his efficiency by foot. Smith could very easily be playing for the Western Bulldogs in Round 1. Assistant coach Steven King believes "Clay is just an exceptional competitor and he hasn't put a foot wrong since he walked in the door". Sounds promising. At TAC Cup level last year, he played in 11 games averaging 27 possessions, 7 marks, 6 tackles and 1.55 goals amassing him 120 Dream Team points a game. In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 17 possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 1 goal leaving him with 77 Dream Team points a game over the 5 game carnival. Cash Cow Potential: In the final Round of the NAB Cup he only scored 21 Dream Team points as the Sub, which is a concern. | This is a 2012 outlook article.

NEWS: Smith collected 22 possessions, 6 marks and 3 tackles for 76 Dream Team points on the weekend, playing through the midfield. He is likely getting close to making his AFL debut in regular season. We did question his disposal across the game, but he has an ability to win and find the ball.
