To Each His Own

« on: November 21, 2010, 08:50:46 PM »

Geelongs ruck situation is pretty good at the moment. Brad Ottens and Mark Blake are generally considered to be our preferred ruck combination. They both, however. have their own problems.
Ottens has been a great player for us, but his legs are now apparently severely injury prone. In 2009 he injured his knee but was able to recover in time to play an important roll in the finals. In 2010 it happened again, but this time was not really ready for finals footy, and I think it showed.
If he gets injured again next season, he may not recover at all, and end his career prematurely.
Blake has had trouble keeping his place in the team at various times. His skills are questionable, and he relies almost totally on his ability as a tap ruckman, at which he is very good.
So if Ottens gets injured, and Scotty does not see a future for Blake, what are his options?
He can use Tomahawk as a pinch hitter. Bomber did this with moderate success last season. Or we can look elsewhere.
We have 2 excellent players in the reserves at the moment. Trent West and Dawson Simpson.
They have only played 13 games between them. Both show a lot of promise though. I watched Trent when we played North Melbourne at end of last season and he can play. He needs a break out season next year because Dawson is younger, and at 206 cm and 105 kg. is a daunting figure.
Scotty will most likely play both of them in the NAB cup, I hope Trent does well because he is older and needs to succeed next year.  There was a rumor that he was up for trade in trade week, but I don't know if that was true.

yea its looking good. id be playing west or simpson before blake, i think they have more upside. you also have nathan vardy who will develop into a great ruck, although he will take time.

Vardy has great wraps and was expected to go higher in last years draft, but slipped to Geelong. I will be looking at him nab cup. There may be some opportunities for him if he has bulked up.

He's only 19 though, so may not get a chance next season. His main hope is if he gets a game in the pre season and stands out. I have to say, in spite of what the other guys are saying, our ruck situation is not bad.
I have high hopes for Trent West. I've seen him play and he definately has potential.

Hola.

He doesn't do much else than rucking. Think that's why many people don't fancy him highly.

If you just wanted a guy to ruck, he's great like bunyip said. However, in this age of football, not having other skills makes him a liability. Especially in such a strong side.

When I think of Mark, the first image that comes to mind is the sulky look on his face when he missed out on the GF .. tough I know but get over it

I think he also gets the blame for Steve King and Shane Mumford leaving, rightly or wrongly

If Ottens goes down again next year it's basically career over & then ur relying on Blake & Hawkins (cannot ruck) & young ruckmen that have all but no experience at AFL level... Did u see the difference Jolly had at Collingwood? I wouldn't say ur ruck situation is good at all...
