I would be very surprised if Leigh Adams isn’t in the North side come round one, finished off last year in good form and has been excellent in pre season.

Josh Smith is a chance for a tall forward spot for RD 1, was injured and a bit forgotten, but came back on the weekend, I’d expect only one of Edwards or Jones to play and that would probably be Jones.

I don’t think Bastinac is locked in, we will see him at some point early but not sure it will be round one. The likes of Adams, Garlett may be ahead of him to start.

Thank, Monty. Agree with AJTarx; Gary Rohan seems to be in the frame at Sydney. There’s been some big wraps on his preseason form. Definitely appears ahead of TDL in the pecking order at the moment.

    • Benno_900 1:16 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Good work on the roos team, M0nty.

But I’d drop 2 of Thomas/Jones/Edwards for Adams and Wright.

And toby07, Tarrant is nowhere near a lock. He’ll debut this season but don’t expect much more than 5-6 games.

    • LeFtBehinD 3:14 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Warren is in no way iffy! He’s our most promising forward prospect this year. He’s well ahead of Jones and Edwards.

    • Arky 5:01 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

      For North:

In: Josh Smith (missed the first 2 rounds injured, not because he’s not in the plans. In the best at Ballarat this week. Will play FF in Petrie’s absence), Adams (best performed of the fringe pack), Wright (pay no mind to the experimental zone defence in the Freo game, nor to the way the young North defence ran around headless chooks without Thompson, Grima, McMahon or Rawlings around to direct traffic).

Out: Edwards (showed nothing all pre-season), Thomas and Bastinac (unlucky; just others are ahead of them IMO).

Warren is not iffy at all. Rawlings not especially iffy either. Hansen is a bit iffy.

    • grum88 7:19 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

what about Sam Wright, he’s shown plenty to get a game round 1

    • TheWest 11:55 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

can anyone tell me why jarred moore isn’t in sydney’s side for round 1?

    • Arky 4:47 pm on March 10, 2010 Permalink

North’s squad for the last practice match is up, and surprised us a bit: no Corey Jones. Either he’s hurt or Scott has decided he’s not in coo-ee for round 1, you’d assume (odd, he looked back to some sort of form vs Geelong). Edwards and Josh Smith still in the squad, and my feeling is still that Josh Smith will be the fill-in for Petrie. Grima is in the squad too, so he’ll probably be fit for round 1.

Would now project North’s rd 1 team as:

      B: Rawlings Thompson McMahon
      HB: Firrito Grima Wright
      C: Greenwood Swallow Anthony
      HF: Ziebell Smith Campbell
      F: Warren Hale Adams

      R: McIntosh Wells Harvey

      I: Goldstein Harding Hansen Thomas

      Iffy: Hansen, Thomas, Wright, Smith
Waiting: Bastinac Cunnington Ross Jones (plus Petrie to return from suspension)

The trouble with Hansen is Thompson and Grima seem to be ahead of him as key backs, he clearly has no desire to play forward (said so in interviews), and he’s fighting with Firrito for the 3rd tall role in defence. The only time Hansen has looked A grade was in the first 6 rounds last year when he held down CHB before getting hurt and watching from the sidelines as Grima made the spot his own… I reckon if he’s not playing KPD they shouldn’t be picking him, but it’s up to them.

    • toodledock 8:35 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

Scully was named in the best in Melbs last practice game. And although they have both been meh in the preseason, I think it looks like Scully is adapting to AFL pace better.

Skipper or Warnock for Bench backup? They are both awful but which one?

Ive got Nicnat, even when he plays simultaniously with Cox he still scores around70

    • bradsp 8:44 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

Have heard rumours that Burgoyne is still pretty iffy for Rd 1 Monty. Also who do you think Sewell will push out when he returns as he is expected to come back a couple of rounds into the season and I would hate to get JKT in only to see him play two games and then not play the crucial third game so he can start making me some cash.

      What say you, hawks man?

Rumour is also that Priddis may be a bit iffy for Rd 1 with knee problems still. Waters also went in pretty hard at the practice match at Leederville against Carlton and I would be fairly sure that the Eagles have a spot for him in the team.

Can’t help but think that your foot is only inches away from your mouth with those comments about Nicnat (not that he is in my team currently). I think he will suprise you and provide good value for coaches this year.

Am also banking on Rockliff having a fair amount of job security and just haven’t been able to find a spot for either Trengove or Scully with so many other good value options in the mids looking likely to get a game.

    • Flasha 11:56 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

Nicnat will make a better small forward than nicoski… That may be where he picks up those extra points that will make him a good buy.

    • DS01 12:10 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Monty, with West Coast I think you have Butler and Nicoski the wrong way around. Pretty sure Butler will play mostly of a HBF and Nicoski as a HF.

Also you didnt mention Scott Selwood. Hes really our only small defender now Wirra has retired and I know Woosha is a big fan of his.
Id expect to see him named in a back pocket.

Waters played in def on Saturday, but think that was more to do with him getting a run rather than signaling any intent.
During 2008 Waters was in the Coaches Box for most games and worked closely with Suma(Forward line coach). I think he’ll play mostly as a FP or HF this season, possibly at the expense of McKinley who has been disappointing this pre season. He may not play Round 1 tho.

Also think Brett Jones will be in for sure. Maybe for Waters, Spangher or possibly even Shuey(tho Id like to think not).

Also agree with above post about NicNat. He may only average around the 70’s but will still make money. Cox is in serious trouble and will definitely spend a lot more time deep in attack this season, meaning NicNat gets much more time on the ball.

    • m0nty 12:14 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Your collective lack of faith in Big Cox is disturbing.

    • DS01 12:24 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Hehehe……theres isnt an Eagle fan who doesnt love Coxy.
But the big guy is in trouble with his groin/stomach. If Cox struggles the Eagles struggle, if the Eagles struggle expect Cox to be mothballed by Round 15 and put in for surgery that he chose not to have the same time last season.
Ive seen him looking very proppy walking into Subi Oval last month or so……then again the champ played most of 2008 with a broken bone in his foot and averaged 106, so maybe it’ll inspire him :-)

    • m0nty 3:22 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Don’t complain about injuries to Burgoyne monty, you guys traded in an injured player :) JKT is one to keep an eye on.

    • bigbudyboy 10:51 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink

      Hey mOnty.

As a keen follower of the hawks it pains me to say that burgoyne and rioli will not be playing round 1. Mark Evans has said as much on his two radio appearences yesterday. So you’d need to take then out of the round 1 team. Also, further bad news is that I think Jordan lewis is “iffy” as his ankle is rumoured to be giving him a bit of trouble. It’s all over the hawthorn bigfooty boards.

In terms of fantasy, I’d say this makes shiels almost a lock. At 250k he has a heap of upside. Tackling machine and is probably best suited to take sewells role.

    • m0nty 2:47 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Rioli and Lewis both trained today without any problem.

    • bradsp 2:55 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Again Monty, who will Sewell push out of that team when he comes back in?

      Muston, Shiels or JKT?

    • AFEsElite 4:37 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Waht do you reckon about Sylvia Monty? He’s supposedly improved over the break, or are these just rumours?

    • Arky 4:47 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

I’ll strongly consider JKT if he’s picked for round 1. Luke Hodge is a lock no matter how much Hawthorn suck, as he really can’t go further down from last year’s suckfest, and between Gibson and Schoenmakers Hodge shouldn’t need to play that midrange defender role this year unless stuff goes amazingly badly. Franklin I am not yet convinced will score significantly better than last year, especially taking into account the missing round 1.

I’m not taking NN at the moment but I reckon he’s a less nuffie pick than that hack Seaby. I am currently planning on gambling on Ottens, on the basis that of all the midpricers available on any line, Ottens (if he stays fit) is one of the most likely to be a keeper in his position.

Agreed on Waters as a bench player, keeping in mind that WCE rate Waters highly, he seems to be in form and if he’s fully fit he will get serious TOG somewhere. Dew is a bad comparison, Dew’s TOG was limited by his fitness not his role.

    • justing 9:45 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Monty, I think Bartram is a good show for the Dees for Round 1, maybe at the expense of Maric. This would release Davey to a wing and push Trengove to the bench where I think Bailey would favour to start Scullgove until the heat comes out of the game.

    • justing 9:49 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

Also, I don’t think you have to worry about Garland for Round 1. He’s only slated to play his first match back from stress fractures this week (a half at that), so unlikely they’ll rush him back after two practice matches after being out for 1 year. More likely round 3-4.

    • Elktek 11:56 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

I heard Raines did well enough in the Carlton match to be factored into part of the Brissy backline?

Not even on waiting? I’d say maybe he’ll rotate in and out with Maguire & maybe Patful based on performance AKA Vossy’s mood..

Monty, how do you think Andrew Mackie is going to go this year?

    • Rob K 1:00 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

Blues_FC – don’t do it – Gumble is high risk and little reward. Rockliffe, Pods, TDL and a few others are way too tempting to consider Gumby.
Tim2 – Mackie is locked in for me. I think he’s only 25 so he’s about to peak. And the Cats backline look like a retirement home (no disrespect Cats – you’re all younger than me). Also, he can kick so I don’t think Bomber will give him many jobs this year.
Great article Monty. Looking fwd to article 2.
Everyone get on Connors. He costs bugger all and it’s not that hard to be in the Tige’s best 22 this year. Plus he’s been TTHD.
How old is that Geelong side? Fruit!
No chance of Melksham getting a game? He’s not even on the waiting list. Like I think you said last year Monty : Essendon are as soft as plywood, so I reckon the Melk Man will feature early.
On an unrelated note, now that Taylor is out for 4 months, is Skipper the biggest lock of the year?
Monty – how much footy do you watch every week? I reckon I could commentate better than a lot of the spazzos on TV, but you have a ridiculous knowledge of footy.

    • m0nty 3:01 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

I expect Mackie to be about the same, Tim2, which means he won’t quite get to gold premium status. The one to get on in that Cat backline is Enright, no question.

    • rkenny86 3:46 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink

Monty, which 2 of these cheap backs would you have in your starting line up: J.Hunt, Ladson, Kenelly or Raines? At the moment I have Ladson and Kenelly, but I think Hunt could go well

you dawks supports are a very sad bunch

    • Arky 4:30 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

      Looks very reasonable.

Only quibble I would pick is that even you have picked 3 talls (Henderson, Waite, O’Hailpin) in Carlton’s “midget forwardline”, with Kreuzer to rotate through as well, so I would be playing Post ahead of one of those bench smalls.

The trouble with Connors is he’s listed as a mid, at the Scully/Trengrove price level. Between job security and scoring, how many rookie mids would you pick him ahead of? For mine, at the least, I would pick Martin, Barlow and Banner… then consider guys like Scully and Trengrove, and guys like Jetta and Bastinac who have much cheaper starting prices…

    • Vegas15Mag 7:29 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink

m0nty whether Joel Corey plays or not, Travis Varcoe is far from iffy – he’s been the standout of Geelong’s preseason and will probably play a lot more midfield than in the past. Could even make you some money.

Why anyone would post their team on here is beyond me. If you think you have a great team why do you share it with others? This is a competition remember?!?! How many teams are now going to have the same as the 10/10 teams?

    • HANK 9:51 am on March 5, 2010 Permalink

Getting others to assemble your team kind of defeats the purpose of being a supercoach. Will not show mine as the rest of yous will clone it.

Hi Monty. This is a bit off-topic, but I’ve only recently signed up to your site and aren’t sure how to chat with you and others. A question for you or anyone who knows the answer. It seems the heraldsun is currently witholding the SC scores from the NAB challenge games. The fantasyfreako newsletter only had DT scores. According to Glenn Luff at championdata, the heraldsun have these scores, but can decide whether or not to publish them. How is it that you are able to provide DT/SC scores for the NAB cup, but not for the NAB challenge games? Do you think we will get access to the NAB challenge stats and SC scores at some stage?
      Thanks for any help.

Hi Monty… made a few changes to my original squad, which you scored 8.5.. let’s see if I’ve nailed it.

BACKS: Hargrave, Enright, Duffield, Hodge, Greenwood, Kenelly, Hunt (Davis, Davies)

MIDS: Ablett, Boyd, Armitage, McVeigh, Martin, Barlow (Bastinac, Lucas)

      RUCKS: Sandilands, McIntosh (Warnock, Trengove)

FORWARDS: Riewoldt, Gia, Franklin, McPhee, LeCras, Ballantyne, Dangerfield (Rockliff, Dennis-Lane)

I must say I was guilty of the Waite inclusion before posting this.. but I changed to the safer option of McPhee. Also looking at Hall for that 4th forward position after a strong NAB.. but that could end badly.

Note that I have $54k left in the kitty and I plan on getting Goddard after he hopefully drops to a more reasonable price.

      Cheers

Good post monty, really enjoy your blogs.

      A few points:

Waters: Definately not a starter, but given the lack of back rookies I would have said he was one of the better options (besides McGuire) in terms of scoring potential. Who else would you recommend… Trengove? (likely 30 avg) Webberly? (wont play) Mitch Farmer (maybe…?) O’keefe… Davis…. From where I stand McGuire and Waters are easily the best options at this stage, with Mitch Farmer third.

David Hille played well in the nab challenge on the weekend by all accounts. Scored 65ish IIRC. Not bad for a first hit out for a big man after a knee. Did plenty of ruckwork too apparently. Given the Essendon forward situation, I’d have said he was a good chance to score well even if he plays at FF all year. They are gonna have to score goals from somewhere right?…. As a Hawthorn fan, you would know Mark Williams fires about once every 4 weeks or so. Maybe I am still scarred from deciding not to take McIntosh last year….. Slighlty off topic, I reckon Paddy Ryder might be an excellent pick this year also. Really matured last year, and did well up forward on the weekend in the second half.

Anyway, thats what I reckon… Beauty of this game is there is no correct answer until the end of round 22!

Monty, how can you not take off points for a spud like kennelly and then write off beau waters. Kennelly has never averaged over 66 in a 8 year career what makes everyone think he’s going to get any better. Waters average 80 in 07, is 50k cheaper and up until a couple of weeks ago they were saying he was super fit. Plus those teams have got half a dozen players who are not certain starters. Does a player lose marks for running around in the reserves. Your system dont make sense to me brother.

    • S_Coach99 12:13 am on March 5, 2010 Permalink

Whopper, I agree. Kennelly will go up a little, but is more safer. Waters is slightly more a risk but if he stays fit will make much more cash. I guess the difference is waters will most likely be a bench option, Kennelly will most likely be a starter, but for 50k less(s/c wise), i think Malceski is back…..or Ladson/Hunt (even cheaper).

Having said that, Id feel safer starting Kennelly over Waters

Whopper: think about it. Kennelly is fully fit, has spent a year building his confidence playing non-contact Gaelic footy, playing halfback in a side that needs outside runners. Waters has a history of soft tissue injury, hasn’t played home & away from 18 months, looked terribly rusty on the weekend, and has been moved away from the lucrative halfback line to become a small forward, a position which is death for fantasy (e.g. Pestinko).

Pretty good Monty… Though you seem to contradict yourself with what you said in the ‘Overhyped players’ blog.

In that one, you were very critical of people picking Cooney who “may” improve 10 points, saying this was a waste and better off looking for someone who’ll improve 25 points.

Yet in this blog, you’re happy to spruik Symes who also “may” improve 10 points, and suggest he is a good pick-up…

In particular reason why one is a better pick up than the other if they’re both a similar risk in terms of potential improvement?

      Cheers

    • jsmithxiv 9:10 am on February 8, 2010 Permalink

Sorry, should read “Any” paricular reason!

@jsmithxiv – Symes is classed a Back, Backs tend not to boost their scoring by as much as Centres do. His point was there are probably stronger options in the centre than Coondawg. There are less options in the Backs.

    • Frankdagun 9:58 am on February 8, 2010 Permalink

MOnty, i’d imagine Leigh Montagna is being ignored due to his $668k price tag. With most coaches still selecting Ablett as a perma-captain, trying to squeeze in Swan, Montagna or even Dal Santo as a 600k plus premium in addition to Ablett would be difficult. Montagna’s price will surely dip at some stage making him a good pick-up.

Also there is so much value with the likes of Hodge, Cooney, Vince & Prismall – why spend and extra 160k when you could upgrade in other areas

    • m0nty 12:30 pm on February 8, 2010 Permalink

jsmithxiv: As Disco DB says, my reasoning there is that Symes adding 10 points gets him to gold premium status, whereas Cooney still lies 15 points behind the leaders if he gets to 100.

    • jmorgan 5:00 pm on February 8, 2010 Permalink

In cooneys first 14 games in his brownlow year he averaged 119 supercoach points before suffering from his knee injury. He is now 24 and is at the beginning of his prime age (according to prospectus it lasts until 28 y.o. generally). In a team tipped to push for a premiership he could “potentailly” average more. Listen to the freak and jump on in supercoach, avoid in dream team.

@Swannies, Get the NAB Cup Record ($7). It has the most consistent list in it (for DT but will be a guide for SC too)

Top 3 were – Thomas, Enright and Lovett-Murray.

    • jggeddes 2:59 pm on February 9, 2010 Permalink

Monty – I was interested in Sam Wright, until he wasn’t listed in your projected 22 for North Melb, and wasn’t even on the “waiting” list! Might be worth a look otherwise, but by your own projections, he is pretty far from being guaranteed a game, or even being in the first 25-26 looked at.

    • Disco DB 11:05 pm on February 9, 2010 Permalink

@Swannies – download FFGenie and sort 2009 data by Standard Deviation (the smaller the SD, the more consistent). You can filter by position, minimum average or whatever. FFGenie is very handy throughout the season also.

Hey monty, nice post! Interesting to read about kerr, I have cooney cause I think he is a safe option considering I have two rookies starting in the midfeild. He had no preseason last year and will most likely improve this year. Last year I picked some premiums that went down in output, my learnings from that are to pick players that will improve. Anyway that’s my contribution!

    • tom_scully 9:55 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

I agree with having cooney, the idea is that he goes from 90 to 110. No Kerr unless Judd and Cuz return to the nest. I thought Waters was travelling ok.

    • toodledock 10:02 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

“is that supposedly-guaranteed 10 point increase enough to justify him being that popular”

It is a 16 point rise actually, and back to brownlow form, with a preseason in the best team in the competition.

“I’d rather search for a Bernie Vince type who is going to rise from 75 to 100,”

And who are these Bernie Vince types? guaranted to raise their average by 25 points. That is a whole 9 more points than Cooney!

So we should pay $35,000 more for Bernie Vince becausse? everyone is doing it? Because a couple of good scores make a superstar the next season? becauce Vince is mr concsistant?

The difference between Coony & Vince is Vince a bit like Global Wsrming is a crock of crap made up by a gew people that the majority believe. He hasnt played one game Monty so how you could go around spurting he will up his avg by 25 points I dont know its just funny and one of few errors of judgement you have made.

Cooney on other hand will rise because: he has had a preseason, his in the best team in the league, he will want to atone for last year.

      So it is pretty clear

Vince= $35,000 extra with no hard evidence he will actually take the next step

Cooney= fitness level guarantees at least small rise

I want everyone to keep vince though so I can pass them on the ladder when he gets tagged cant handle it scores 44 again and bring the sheeple sailing on the Bernard Vince ship to the bottom of the bay.

Even after you’ve said Palmer won’t play round one you get some spud saying surely you’ve gotta have one of blah, blah, Palmer, blah, blah.

To hear that all these players names are constantly cropping up in the fanplanner warms my heart. These people don’t deserve spoonfeeding. Let em fry mate. There’s being informative and generating discussion and then there’s spoonfeeding. If people aren’t bright enough to see that starting two rookies and two players coming back from LTI’s in the midfield is stupid or that naming players as their 7th forward/back that will be lucky at best to get named in round one and even if they do will more than likely score crap then that’s their problem.

It shits me as well, not because they’re getting picked but because these morons will sit there and spout shit like Gumbleton will score 60-80 a week with absolutely NOTHING to back them up!!!

Okay that’s my vent on the subject. Let em fry m0nty. Please.

      Fart Gas Sam
      First google the word: ‘imply’
you dumbass, would you like me to make that clearer for you? dumbass

Second, your one of these stupid people I mention ‘Adelaide will finish higher than the Bulldogs’ What is this comment based on? Well iT cant be based on last year as the bulldogs went further than Adelaide so one can assume it comes from your ass and that is another thing which makes you stupid. Talking from your ass. YOU DUMBASS

Secondly Adelaide are dependent on a bunch of old age pensioners and that will they will decline this year with their core players aging. Mcleod barely made it through last year, he has gone from SC must have to supercoach dont touch in a million years, his decline will continue.

The crows are going to finish higher than me? I am not an AFL team. YOU DUMBASS.

Vince to establish himself in the top midfielders in the comp a random mythical guessed based on two games from last year… once again YOU DUMBASS

    • toodledock 10:53 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

And the point still stands everyone is simply guessing Vince will go up that he wont receive any more attention and will simply pick up where he left off 6 months ago, not likely.

Cooney from a fitness perspective has a guarantee he will rise and is 35g cheaper.

    • timskul 11:00 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

geez toodledock, he was making the point that monty was not talking about vince, but picking ‘this years bernie vince’ whoever that may be. vince is already amongst the best midfielders in the comp, in the brownlow he finished with the same amount of votes as sam mitchell, montagna, pendlebury, sewell and bartel. it doesnt take a genuis to figure out that your refers to the bulldogs. bulldogs the best team in the league is also a random mythical guess

    • m0nty 11:04 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

toodledock, I’m afraid gas_sam was right and you got the wrong end of the stick. I referred to a “Bernie Vince type”, i.e. a young player whose average will rise from 75 to 100 this year through natural improvement. Like a Mackay, Rich or Pearce.

Please don’t call each other names.

    • MegaHurnie 11:09 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

No Mr ToodleDock, My comment was based on the last 20 years. How well have bulldogs done lately……you can talk them up all you like but for we’ve all heard it before. Adelaide on the other hand have a very young team and ARE coming weather you like it or not. To say Bulldogs are the best team is just RUBBISH… 0 Rubbish. Everybody knows who the best 2 teams are at the moment. Then there’s maybe 2-3 clubs below them who keep promising but never deliver (eg Dogs, Pies). Then there’s 6-8 clubs who can break into that 2nd group this year. I can understand if you’re a cats/saints supporter, but you’re just being silly with those comments.

Before you suggest googling to anybody, I suggest you google “AFL Football history”, then have a look at last years ladder, then your beloved bulldogs list and if you half a brain cell you’d be able to figure they are clearly NOT the best team.

You think Adelaide are “dependent on a bunch of old age pensioners “…..the same could be said about the bulldog’s except there are more “better” young names on the Adelaide list.

Just remember you’ve been in the league since 1925 and have won 1 flag which was over 50 years…..”BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE”

      And you call me stupid…..

    • gas_sam 11:14 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

I’m not going to bother arguing with you Toodledock* (that was actually an honest mistake :) )because I don’t see the point.

All I have to say is you made your hatred towards Vince very clear, even though you were “implying” that you were talking abour premiums like him generally? Give me a break.

You come across as being extremely obnoxious and rude. You should work on that. I just hope your some little kid trying to get your kicks. If not, god help you.

And btw, ‘gas’ isn’t in any way related to ‘fart’. More “That’s the gas”. Yeah, guess it hasn’t really caught on.

    • Wookies 11:15 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

Toodledock, just to iron it out. Vince in 2008 for DT averaged 75, in 2009 he averaged 100. Monty is saying that he would prefer to find someone that will do the same as vince did eg. someone that will raise their average by 25 points on last year. As i believe anyone would. cheers for the write up monty

    • bigjack 11:20 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

I think Geelong has some claims on best team in the league!!!!

I reckon Ablett is the likely improver by 25 points per round. Imagine if he can stay fit all year, they have given up on tagging him.

    • toodledock 11:52 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

      OK OK

Monty when you use Bernie Vince in the example I assume you were implying he was once again going to bump his average by 25 points this year which would be founded on nothing.

As for players like him, a great idea but its bloody hard to pick the big improvers, you also have to be willing to take a chance.

Who is keen on Kerr and Wells in there team… they could be the big improver’s they could be the big disasters

I agree with you in most parts.

But what do you read to get some of that info? Everything I read says Medhurst is having a pearler of a pre-season, Not that I would pick him coz he sucks, Also Hille looked to come away from the scratch match pain free, Definately not a starter for the season though.

Also the Bargain Basement price for Burton is too good for me to resist. He’s the only one I will have from this article. I just think he may get more marks up in high half forward.
Neil Craig loves the old farts.

    • ILuvCox 12:22 pm on February 7, 2010 Permalink

Cooney has played 127 of a possible 132 games which shows great durability. I think he is a great premium to add to your side to compliment any “bernie vince types” that you have. I think his avg points per game will increse. Last year I had some premiums that went down that negated the increase in output I got from my “bernie vince types”. I reckon you got this one wrong monty.

We are much closer than you (and most non SA people) think. The crows have arguably the best crop of young talent in the league which makes your old age pensioners statement pretty redundant. Dangerfield, Tippett, Mackay, Porps, Otten, Knights, and your boy Vince. Every year all the ‘experts’ say we are going to drop off. Every year we prove them wrong.

      My two Zimbabwe cents…

bigrig – Ball looks good for SC, sack Hille – pay attention to what m0nty has said in both his ‘Rate My…’ articles and at injury lists = 9 changes to your team.

darcyd – ur light in the rucks, replace one of wells or burgoyne (impact players, not massive ball winners) for someone of more value.

magpies76 – listen to the Coaches Box. And read both ‘Rate My…’ articles.

Quicksta – your team is a bit 2000 and late on – Grimes, Krakpot, Higgins & Sylvia – unless you see the same improvement again this year. And listen to the Coaches Box for 3 other changes.

Monty I think you will find that Hille was swearing during the praccy match due to disappointment at the way he was playing, if he was in any sort of pain he wouldn’t have been playing.

just post your teams on the forum omg lol

    • Resch 6:21 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

Based on the comments on ROK/Tippett you do not consider MPP to be any advantage.

The ability to substitute between lines, reducing risk and increasing flexibility is a valid strategy.

Since pricing is relative to MN less discounts choosing one player over another for the same price is just preference (although upside should be considered it is less relevant for guns such as ROK, Goddard etc).

A lot of experienced players still have fixed views on team line up, rigid thinking on positions and have dismissed MPP as a gimmick.

Luck with injuries, form and suspensions does play a big part in this game and the ability to reduce the risk from these factors should not be dismissed so quick.

      My 2 polynesion pesos worth….

    • kissoflife 7:17 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

I must say that I agree with Resch. The ability to substitute between positions is definitely of some value. I personally wouldn’t say that the coaches who choose to take advantage of the flexibility that MPPs now provide are doing so “for no good reason”. But yes, this is only my two cents’ worth and just how useful this new rule will be is anyone’s guess.

    • m0nty 7:19 pm on February 6, 2010 Permalink

Resch, I do consider multi-position players to be an advantage, but not in the first half of the year.

I set this argument out in the podcast. When do you get the vast majority of your donuts? In the second half of the season. That’s when MPP is far more important. There are a handful of MPP rookies who might provide excellent rookie cover as downgrades from your cash cows. That is the time that this rule will come into its own.

    • m0nty 11:50 pm on February 7, 2010 Permalink

I’ll review everyone’s sides now. If I don’t mention immediate replacements, might I suggest looking over my structure post – I know it’s only for DT but there are a lot of shared players.

      http://www.fanfooty.com.au/blog/2010/01/21/2010-dream-team-structure-1/

bigrig: I’d reconsider Bock seeing as he’s had a modified preseason due to big surgery. Same thing for Stevie J. Chappy and Pav are wasted in the centres seeing as you have seven forward keepers already, that’s bad structure. Willo is a big risk for mine, but it’s not a terrible one. I’d drop Chappy (upgrade Willo to him mid-season), put Pav in the forwards for Johnson, buy Ball and upgrade Hille. 6/10

darcyd: I’m still going to dock you for Waters. Wells is a huge risk when you also have injury-prone Ablett and Burgoyne in those mids, I foresee donuts. 8/10

magpies76: Moore and Smith starting in the backs, two bad ideas at this stage. Charman also not good to start. Forwards are a little heavy with Polkinghorne benched. I won’t say this often, but this team needs a little cash shifted from the forwards to the backs. 6/10

mcpies10: This is a pretty good team. I’m still very wary of starting a rookie back this year. If you can scrounge some cash to upgrade that 7th spot to a Hunt or Ladson, somewhere around there, you’ve got something. 9/10

Quicksta: I don’t like Kerr this year at all, plus you’re starting Farmer too. Sell Kerr for a rookie and upgrade that 7th back spot. Wait, what’s that I see in the forwards? Ryan… Murphy? AAAAHHGHGHGH GET IT OUT GET IT OUT!!!! 0/10

XXNATHANXX: Raines, surely not again. Once bitten, twice shy. I can see you’re a brave man since you’re starting Judd… you’d better be sure Shuey is playing! I hate your entire ruck corps, so congratulations on that. Medders I hate also. Watts starting, hate that too. Stefan Martin, he gets my vote of hatred. You’re turning me into Sauron, Natho. My being is consumed with implacable rage. 2/10

ANTMANS: Not a bad side, but I would quibble with Wona, Rusling, Wells and Cotching. Wona is injured, Rusling may not play, and the other two are injury risks to add to GAJ and Burgoyne. I would try to concentrate on fitter players in the mids.7/10

bazza16: Hille, Rohan and Waite may all miss round 1 and beyond. Otherwise not bad, if perhaps lacking enough top-quality captain options. 7/10

dmdunne: Starting Sheppard and Watts is not my preference, plus I’m not a Hurley fan given his fitness. Move Higgins and Dangerfield forward, buy another centre rookie and see if you can find some money to upgrade Sheppard. 6/10

saliba29: I would check on Harbrow’s fitness, he’s run into a leg/knee problem this week. I’d prefer Hunt over Waters. If you’re going with Tippett I’d put Lobbe in the forwards in place of Rohan and get a 77k ruck rookie to set and forget. Don’t like Rusling either. Otherwise a fine structure. 8/10

mammalian: If you’re starting a rookie-priced back in SC it has to be Maguire, anyone else is way too risky – and Maguire is very risky anyway. No to Hurley. Vickery is an interesting one, if it comes off you’ll look like a genius! Long shot though if Simmonds doesn’t go down. 7/10

$17,300 left over, I think 3 crows in the forward maybe a little to much but Phil Davis is going to make some good points this year and is cheap, Taylor Walker is also going to have a great year as he is looking very good at training and as good as Tippet in the forward line, He doesnt have the height but does have great speed and has put on a lot of muscle over the pre season.

sprarepart: Jamison, can’t say I like him as a unique. Bower was good last year but Jamison will be stuck playing close-checking defensive roles.Ziebell I would prefer in the forwards. Hille I would prefer out of your team. Farmer is very iffy as a starter. Some good uniques in that team though, it has potential. 7/10

In There: The Big Setant, geez, massive call. He could give your team the kick up the coit that it needs, or he could get it booted out of contention. Glass, Hahn, Miller… LEIGH BROWN??!? Dude, your team is a potato factory. Your centres are too top heavy and your forwards are execrable. Delete and start over. 0/10

Hommus: I declare this team to be tasty as a lamb kebab. My only quibble is in starting TDL, but the rest of the team is full of tzatziki flavour so I’ll let that go. 10/10

mannop: Charman, no. Starting Watts, dunno about that either. I think you might have to downgrade one of your keepers so you can upgrade those two. Fairly good otherwise. 8/10

biggooters: That is a very guns-and-rookies kind of side but I think you’ll find that there is a lot of value in mid-price players this year, especially in the backs and forwards. Six starting rookies is at least three too many. Plus there’s Hille. Take a long hard look at your structure and go back to the drawing board. 4/10

burner09: Fairly good team apart from Seaby and Davis. Downgrade one of those centre starters to Trengove or Martin, and upgrade those two positions. 8/10

dan667766: There is a lot of hype around Polak but I can’t see him playing enough to be worthy of a start. Moss is still a rookie. Garland and Seaby are ordinary options. I think you’re a little top-heavy in the centres so there’s room to move cash out of there. 6/10

bmcdougall: You’re lacking a top-line captain option, plus I don’t like Waite from the start. Downgrade Waite and upgrade Goodes to Ablett or another 115 premium. 8/10

saborn: Swan is good enough for a captain. I can’t find a hole in that team, to be honest. Your structure is excellent. 10/10

Fattys: This side piques my interest because it includes no starting rookies, yet it’s not bad. I am not enamoured with the amount of stay-at-home forwards you have with Hawkins, Walker, Williams and Yarran. Atkinson and Rich are valid uniques. This team will probably do well in early rounds but will struggle later in the season due to a lack of cash cows. I would think about starting a centre rookie and redistributing the cash into your forwards to buy more midfield-oriented smalls. 9/10

macattack: Not sure I like Mayne as a unique, plus Polak is a mirage imo. I would sell Masten for a rookie and upgrade those other two. 7/10

greenbaron: Trengove is highly likely to get dropped for Chaplin in R2 so don’t start him. I wouldn’t trust Gumby. I wouldn’t trust Drummond either, he’s your best candidate to downgrade to get the cash. 7/10

Daniel_79: I have been hearing bad things about Power’s preseason, which has been nearly nonexistent. Sell him for a rookie and upgrade Gumby and Charman. 7/10

tappy22: Broken record time – Sheppard starting, Hille, Hurley, Gumby starting. Sell one or two of those centre keepers to fund upgrades. 4/10

Sams Town: Marc Murphy is not startable early due to his injuries. Sell him for a rookie and upgrade Sheppard and Gumby. 7/10

doug23: Waite and Hurley, that’s too much injury worry. Neagle as your seventh forward, hmmm… okay, I’ll allow that. Thornton as a unique is quirky. Overall I think this side has too many injury and selection concerns. 7/10

Disagree on two comments: 1. Lack of Goddard -0.5 (With a plethora of decent back choices, he can be squeezed out to be traded in when price dips), 2. Beau Waters -1 (Might be worth a punt, but is not in my team).

    • nick1408 10:43 pm on February 5, 2010 Permalink

I agree with TBear. It is possible to squeeze Goddard out or even slightly downgrade to Enright. Waters will depend on his pre-season but from what I read he is back to full training and Gumbleton or Rusling will make great bench forwards with the lack of out-and-out gun rookie forwards as Jack Trengove should have been.

    • HaffAttack 11:15 pm on February 5, 2010 Permalink

Not that I want to say stop posting or anything as basically your website stats rock but I was actually wondering where your DT’s have finished over the years Monty?

Obviously we all have oppinions but I do dissagree with ALOT of the above…

    • Bartel 12:00 am on February 6, 2010 Permalink

Hey m0nty, I would really like you to analyse this team for your next addition of ‘rate my dream team’, if you have another one that is.

It is not quite my actual team, because it has taken the particular strategy a little bit further than mine has, but it is quite close and could end up being my actual team as the more i look at it, the more confident i grow.

B – Goddard, Birchall, Henderson, Kenelly, Broadbent, Buckley, Ladson (Shephard, Davis)

C – Montagna, Selwood, Pendlebury, Hodge, Trengrove, Martin (Shuey, Bastinac)

R – Kruezer, Tippett (Warnock, Lobbe)

F – Riewoldt, Goodes, J.Brown, Pavlich, Franklin, Mcphee, Dangerfield (Dennis-lane, Tapscott)

The idea here is that Hodge will be moved to the backline to become a keeper for the likes of Buckley/Broadbent/Ladson and McPhee Davis/Henderson. McPhee Hodge can also provide valuable cover to the backline which is obviously the riskiest part of the team.

Guru of 1789 FWIW. I just think it would be of some benefit for all prospective DT’ers for 2010 to see you analyse some more ‘extreme/risky strategies’ and this team probably fits the bill (Plus with the new multi-position it could be quite practical). Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts – and anyone elses – on this team.

PS great work with your blogs!

    • Dougal 12:07 am on February 6, 2010 Permalink

      hey guys,
who r the “plethora of attractive cheap backs” that monty refers to who will actually play round 1?
      reports say ladson wont play.

    • m0nty 12:16 am on February 6, 2010 Permalink

R.Harvey35: Palmer will not play in round 1, according to Freo. Sounds like he’ll start slowly.

The -0.5 for Goddard in that first team summed up my feeling that he skimped on his premiums. He’s got six potential keepers in that backline and not enough 90 locks like Goddard.

HaffAttack: I’m the first to admit I’m more of an SC specialist, with a high finish of 67. My DT runs have all ended in injury-riddled disaster so far. Take from these posts what you will.

As for the teams, keep them coming, I’ll try to get to them in a future post.

What’s your opinion of the amount of money in the bank? Should you be skint ($10k) to maximise selections? or ripe ($150k) incase of an early injury, a player not improving from the previous year or to trade in someone who has jumped out of the blocks?

SaintPat66, I like Houli as a SuperCoach specialist. He’s inside and handballs too much with too few marks for DT, but his contested possessions and disposal efficiency make him a good SC prospect.

Kennelly is one of a relatively large number of strong candidates in the cheap backs, and is probably the strongest of them.

    • m0nty 11:04 pm on February 7, 2010 Permalink

Alrighty then, big deep breath. I’ll review everyone’s sides now. If I don’t mention immediate replacements, might I suggest looking over my structure post.

      http://www.fanfooty.com.au/blog/2010/01/21/2010-dream-team-structure-1/

Paddy13: Pretty good overall but if you could avoid starting Trengove in the backs that would be great – try Hunt, or perhaps swap Goddard to the backs and buy Jack Trengove in the centres. 8/10

haren: Boo to Kerr, Hille and Medhurst, plus starting Gumby is a bad idea. 6/10

Bartel: While I personally wouldn’t have many of your players, I respect your choices and I can’t see anything wrong with your side structurally, except perhaps for a lack of a second 115 captain (though that’s minor). 10/10

quekkie: Don’t like Waters, Masten or Burton. I’d sell Burton for Dangerfield in that team and upgrade the other two with the proceeds. Don’t like starting a Swans rookie either, use that cash to upgrade one of those three forward rookies. 6/10

Grizzlee: Schoenmakers is not a DTer. Move Ladson to the backs and buy a first-round mid rookie. Mumford is not startable, Burton is too old. 6/10

TIGERS1980: Polo, there’s an interesting one. Okay, I won’t dock you for that. Broadbent in the centres bench is two bad ideas rolled into one. Hille and Leuey are two more bad ideas. Sell Fisher, move Broadbent back, buy a first-round mid, and upgrade those rucks to premiums. 6/10

TopEagle: No from me on Waters, Burton and Watts. 7/10

10JossT: Wow, that’s a stacked forward line. I’m going to have to dock you a point for lack of 115 captain option plus I think you’re going to struggle early covering for both Buddy and Waite, but otherwise I’m surprised that fits under the cap. 9/10

MA19: You were looking great there until Hurley bobbed up. He’s having an interrupted preseason. Otherwise I like it, two gold captain options, plenty of uniques. 9/10

sabero5: Hurley and Gumbleton. Two injury-prone Dons, two points docked. 8/10

thefly1976: Starting Maguire is very risky. Wona won’t play early. I’d like Sylvia better in the forwards. Milburn and Thomas… iffy. You’ve got a lot of interesting, quirky players there. Not sure they’ll win the cars for you though. 7/10

Cicjose: You’re missing two players mate. Hurley and Schoenmakers I don’t like either, Rohan won’t play early if at all.

Sunday2810: Is that Nathan Jones? He’s not winning anyone any cars. Not even Matchbox ones. I’m docking two big points for him alone! Sheppard, Rusling and Gumby starting, don’t like that either. Too top-heavy in the backs, move your cash to the forwards. 4/10 (which is less than 10/10 btw – leave the scoring to me, champ :P )

DORK01: Waters, Hille and Rusling are bad options. Too much money in the mids for mine. 7/10

Chang25547: Two teams? Cheeky. The first one’s decent apart from starting Tapscott and having too much money in the backs. The second is even worse in also starting Sheppard. 8/10 and 7/10

watsonjw: I am very unsure about starting Mitch Farmer, and your forward bench is useless, especially seeing as you need cover for Buddy in R1. Plus Hurley. The structure is about right, just some personnel issues. 7/10

HarbaHero: Clarke is injured and Rohan wont play. Cheney and Hansen I would be extremely iffy about. Your side is screwed up due to too much reliance on the multi position rule. Move Goddard, Chappy, Hodge and Ziebell out of the centres and bring in some centre rookies to start. Better to pick the best players in their best position rather than rely too much on flexibility. 4/10

    • m0nty 10:38 pm on February 8, 2010 Permalink

shano73: Where to start with this team. I think it would be far better in SC than DT. Way too many talls: Spangher, Rivers, Maguire, Walker, boo to all. Your lack of captain options is criminal. Jack is a tagger. Bin the whole team, read a bunch of fantasy media for tips, and start again. 0/10

REVERSE: I don’t think Hartlett is a good pick seeing as he’s been suffering from glandular fever in the preseason which, as you would know, ruins your muscle tone. I don’t like Seaby or Gumby as starters either. Otherwise it’s looking pretty good. 7/10

fordy: I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but I am not a fan of Kerr or Raines, plus starting Sheppard and a forward rookie is not the right way to go this year. Rohan won’t play early. Pratt is an interesting one, I’ll trust your judgement on that. 6/10

zibba: Waite, Hurley and Sylvia may struggle for round 1. I’d much rather start a centre rookie than Gumby in the forwards. Shift some money out of your centres to your forwards. 7/10

dousty: Tarrant? Are you kidding? Minus two for that. Hunt on the bench is a waste. Xavier Clarke is injured for a couple of months into the season. Kennedy and Betts I’m not great fans of but I can see some upside I suppose. Wona is injured too btw. 6/10

watsonjw45: Hurley, Goddard wasted in the centres. plus Warnock starting are the problems. Solve those and I think you’ve got a decent little side there. 7/10

Everything must go: 2010 DT/SC discounts

Price discounts are always important in the big fantasy comps. Eligibility has expanded hugely in 2010 with players like Rhys Palmer getting significant cuts. (More …)

anyone keen on 60 70 from waters providing he makes it through the NAB?

Rumour from the Essendon board is Hille was not great in the practice match and was heard letting the odd F bomb go. Selective journalism apparently. I suppose to expect anything other than speculation and fact twisting frm the Herald Sun would be silly though.

      Matt Maguire is $114,000
      Robert Warnock is $132,200
      Kennelly is $320,700

Am I missing something? Am I going crazy…. cos that is likely…

Come on Monty, I greatly appreciate your effort but the supercoach prices are all up the spout. Buckley is out by $51000

Monty I too love your work, but fear that Supercoach is the poor cousin on your site

I have just updated the post with the correct SC prices, and added in some special SC discount differences.

Thanks Monty, your hard work saves us hours of work. Much appreciated.

I think you left David Hille off the list. He should fall into the 20% category.

Rory Sloane was a player I was really keen on before the prices were released. Monty do you know why he has not received a discount as previously mentioned by Webbcrow. 1 game @ 40 yet still fully priced???

Also it is a great shame that a potentially good thread (overhyped players) was destroyed by a couple of sledgers. Rather than close the discussion perhaps block the idiots who turn it into a personal hate session
