Hi Monty. This is a bit off-topic, but I’ve only recently signed up to your site and aren’t sure how to chat with you and others. A question for you or anyone who knows the answer. It seems the heraldsun is currently witholding the SC scores from the NAB challenge games. The fantasyfreako newsletter only had DT scores. According to Glenn Luff at championdata, the heraldsun have these scores, but can decide whether or not to publish them. How is it that you are able to provide DT/SC scores for the NAB cup, but not for the NAB challenge games? Do you think we will get access to the NAB challenge stats and SC scores at some stage?

disagree with much of the advice, dont want to be the harshest critic coz this site has been awsome for me in the past and still is but how the first team is a 10/10 i have no idea. yes it is just my opinion but im sure it would be shared by the majority

A few points:

Waters: Definately not a starter, but given the lack of back rookies I would have said he was one of the better options (besides McGuire) in terms of scoring potential. Who else would you recommend… Trengove? (likely 30 avg) Webberly? (wont play) Mitch Farmer (maybe…?) O’keefe… Davis…. From where I stand McGuire and Waters are easily the best options at this stage, with Mitch Farmer third.

David Hille played well in the nab challenge on the weekend by all accounts. Scored 65ish IIRC. Not bad for a first hit out for a big man after a knee. Did plenty of ruckwork too apparently. Given the Essendon forward situation, I’d have said he was a good chance to score well even if he plays at FF all year. They are gonna have to score goals from somewhere right?…. As a Hawthorn fan, you would know Mark Williams fires about once every 4 weeks or so. Maybe I am still scarred from deciding not to take McIntosh last year….. Slighlty off topic, I reckon Paddy Ryder might be an excellent pick this year also. Really matured last year, and did well up forward on the weekend in the second half.

Anyway, thats what I reckon… Beauty of this game is there is no correct answer until the end of round 22!

That is all very well with the hindsight of two rounds of the NAB, MightyWang. Your critique of players like Buckley, Polkinghorne and Drum would hold more credibility if it had been posted back when those teams were posted.

Monty, how can you not take off points for a spud like kennelly and then write off beau waters. Kennelly has never averaged over 66 in a 8 year career what makes everyone think he’s going to get any better. Waters average 80 in 07, is 50k cheaper and up until a couple of weeks ago they were saying he was super fit. Plus those teams have got half a dozen players who are not certain starters. Does a player lose marks for running around in the reserves. Your system dont make sense to me brother.

Whopper, I agree. Kennelly will go up a little, but is more safer. Waters is slightly more a risk but if he stays fit will make much more cash. I guess the difference is waters will most likely be a bench option, Kennelly will most likely be a starter, but for 50k less(s/c wise), i think Malceski is back…..or Ladson/Hunt (even cheaper).

Having said that, Id feel safer starting Kennelly over Waters

Whopper: think about it. Kennelly is fully fit, has spent a year building his confidence playing non-contact Gaelic footy, playing halfback in a side that needs outside runners. Waters has a history of soft tissue injury, hasn’t played home & away from 18 months, looked terribly rusty on the weekend, and has been moved away from the lucrative halfback line to become a small forward, a position which is death for fantasy (e.g. Pestinko).

Beau Waters broke his elbow, the surgical complications of an injury like that are similar to a knee with less margin for error. Brent Harvey is a very fortunate man to come out so fit.
I don’t see much difference between Beau and Shaun Higgins of this time last year. They both had orthopedic injuries, Waters has taken an extra year to get it right. He’s had a fragment removed from his knee but he’s still played half a preseason match and scored 50 points while the rest of his team was smashed and he couldn’t find his touch. He was a standout in their intra-club match and a leader at the club.
The things you need to be saying about him are that he puts his body on the line too often, he throws himself into contests that could very easily see him scrubbed out, with the new head high contact, or flattened out by a poorly executed bump.
Shannon Hurn is the rebounding Eagles defender with soft tissue injuries.
How is Kennelly’s shoulder? He would have needed a reconstruction at the end of his last season, did he have the time off to do it properly when he was playing Gaelic?

westhoff39: I would downgrade Masten to a rookie and upgrade Naitanui. A little top-heavy in the mids without a genuine 115 captain, but otherwise I can’t fault you. 8.5/10

Kobe_10: I don’t like your captain choices, you need someone at Bartel’s price or higher. 9.5/10

flame: I love Roughie as a player but I don’t think he’s a DTer. Maybe for SC. Good everywhere else. 9/10

bigadz: I don’t like Seaby for DT, and Dempsey is a big injury risk. This is another team that struggles for top-shelf captain choices too. 7.5/10

saber05: I still don’t like Ottens. I’m still docking a point for whoever picks him. You guys know this by now. 9/10

papbomber: The structure in this team is solid but unspectacular. I just think there isn’t enough upside in the likes of Armitage, LeCras and McPhee to propel them to premium status. You might win a league with this team but you won’t win the car. 9.5/10

I dont care if you dock points for 3 midfield rookies as i believe this is the way to go in 2010. I don’t think there is one decent rookie outside the midfield. I will rotate the 5 rookies depending on form but all of them have potential to average 70 .

I laugh at everyone that picked Armitage and Masten. Armo will not play 22 games, he’ll burn out towards the end of the season and i think he’s sure to get dropped at some stage. Masten’s scores sure look good in the NAB but they’ll drop once it gets to the real thing. He has 25 possie games for about 75-80 points, which means he’ll never be a true premium but you’re paying a price tag.

At best they’ll both end up at the 350k price tag and will not be in the winner’s team.

Don’t pick injury-riddled players. I can’t remember the amount of times I had to take marks off for the likes of Scott Gumbleton, Jarrad Waite, Michael Hurley and Beau Waters. Even if they do make it to round 1, it’s a poor decision to buy them anyway, because they don’t have the fitness base over the preseason that their competitors for spots in your team have enjoyed. Think Franklin of last year.

Don’t pick players who are LTI. Xavier Clarke, anyone?

Don’t skimp on your starting rucks. I have heard people hemming and hawing about whether to choose David Hille, Brad Ottens or Nic Naitanui. The answer should be: none of the above! Fantasy coaches have been sucked in by the Troy Simmonds story of 2008. No, I don’t think there is a Simmonds type in this year’s crop. Shell out the clams for two premium rucks and hope to God they don’t fall victim to LTIs.

why have you said thi i have chosen hille and ottens in my rucks and have waite in my backs. why should someone not pick players such as hille i understand the point about otens were he is quite a large risk but not sure about hille has been a proven proformer before his injure and with the dons list should get games.

I have $122,600 left in the bank, but i’m not sure what to do with it. The reason I went with Gibbs/Selwood as my captain is because I believe they are both due for huge years. Also not sure about Kennely or Malceski. And lastly I went with Skipper as one of my emergencies instead of Roughead or Lobbe. I did this because Taylor’s recent injury means Skipper will be a definate for the 1st few rounds and will give him a chance to cement a spot in the Hawthorn team.

I would go with Hmac, Malceski and Gia.
Malceski should be a no-brainer after his good form this pre-season.. Gia likewise. Rucks are a little harder to pick but I would say go with Hmac mainly because theres not really much ruck competition for him at the Roos and Mitch Clark dominated last year when the Lions’ ruck stocks were completely decimated, he might not enjoy as many points this year.

My two cents…

Mid-range Rucks
I have to disagree with monty. While there is much appeal to getting premium rucks, there’s no upside price wise. Looking at the ideal team from last years prospectus, the perfect starting rucks were Fraser (336k) and Tippet (191k). Ruckmen typically don’t develop in their first year - typically 2-5 years before they start producing the goods. Therefore, there is value to be found in the mid range while they develop. A good example is Kreuzer, improving his average from 54 to 75 last year (worth considering). Personally I think hille is way under the odds having averaged 86 and is therefore worth the risk. Nicnat should show an improvement of perhaps 10-15 points, and is a show for a solid season if Cox gets injured. If you don’t have the money to spare, he’s an option. Seaby will get the lions share of the ruck duties, but doesn’t have enough upside for me. Still, better than mumford. I would consider roughead or trengove as your rookie(bench) rucks if you don’t have them locked in already. (warnock is the most obvious option)

the back conundrum
There are a lot of cheap options down back. Hunt, Kennelly, ladson, macguire, malceski. Which one you choose mostly depends which spot you’re looking at. Hunt should play, so he’s a good 7th back. Macguire is a decent bench option. Ladson was my first option, but his scores in the Nab have been poor, so consider Kennelly or Malceski. It’s been mentioned elsewhere that you should keep an eye on what happens to their scores when shaw comes back into the side. Good advice.

The forward line
In the forwards, there aren’t many rookies this year. I would strongly consider adding barry hall to your lineup, given his form. Also, rockliff is worth a bench slot. Other than that stay away from injured premiums Yes, I know it’s hard when your opposition smacks you with a 130 captaincy effort from Chapman, but he hasn’t played a full season in years. Be conservative and spend the money elsewhere. Steve Johnson is risky for injury too. Spend money elsewhere. Optionally, take the safe option. Tarkyn Lockyer I say. Plays 22 every year. Gumby shouldn’t be in the list. My personal smokie here is Wonna from the dees. Big injury risk unfortunately, but he’ll play if fit. He doesn’t make my side though just yet
mid field mayhem
There are many rookie and mid range options. Way too many. If you don’t have martin, put him in for god’s sake! This should be your first rookie pick.

Don’t play kerr. You only have to look at the games missed from injury to know there’s no upside here. Consider masten or armitage as mid rangers, or perhaps banner as another bencher since martin should be started on the field. Drop gumbleton (injury).

No martin in the mid? Think long and hard about that. He’ll play and score well.

fireburner
Dalziell may not play. Look elsewhere. You have expensive rookies on the bench. Consider a cheap rookie. You have a lot of mid range players, which is a hard strategy. Consider additional rookies and premiums.

troyzaaaaa
Can’t fault your team. Make sure than shepperd, TDL and davis will play. I don’t have those answers.

greatdane
waters shouldn’t be on the field. Injuries and crap scores. Warnock will score badly too. Get a better ruck. Ditch chapman for another premium forward, and add martin to the mid.

No complaints here. Just keep an eye on ladson’s scoring potential.

I like Cotchin, but he’s too much of an injury risk to me. Rockliff on the field is a risk. Will he play? Will he play every week?

Rioli is a risk considering injury and interrupted preseason. Drop gumby.

Trace77 Interesting lineup. I like it. Bench defense might be an issue, but obviously you’re heavily weighted to premiums on purpose. You risk some doughnuts. Also, consider changing hunt for waters.

joeboy Play martin in the mid. While I don’t have much criticism, I think you can pull together a better squad (for instance, rockcliff on the field is a risk, and I don’t know much about your bench forwards).
