Everything must go: 2010 DT/SC discounts

DT/SC discounts

Price discounts are always important in the big fantasy comps. Eligibility has expanded hugely in 2010 with players like Rhys Palmer getting significant cuts.

Fremantle Dockers Training Session

Every year, it’s the same. I try to project a likely looking set of discounts in the Fanplanner, and every year the boys at VirtualSports change the rules on a whim. This year, they decided to expand eligibility for their dicsounting system up from the 30 or so that they included last year up to well over 120 players in 2010. The Dream Team magic number has dropped to 4396 or so, compared to last year’s 4438. In the Byzantine formulae that VS have created to formulate their player prices, this drop is actually connected to the extended discounting, as there are rules for balancing out the total player payments to the size of the salary cap.

This is the first time the MN has dropped in DT, in my recollection. Also, the Supercoach MN has deviated from its previously set-in-stone figure of 5365 to about 5312. The SC MN had not changed previously due to the salary cap not changing, so this year’s change is unexpected. When it comes to fantasy price discounting, however, expect the unexpected.

Adam Cockie, WC CTR (rookie). DT $232,200, SC $295,200. 7 games at 58.7 DT, 55.6 SC.

Yes, you will notice a common theme running through the stats of all these players: seven, eight or nine games played last year, apart from Tiller. This is a change of the “rules” from last year whereby playing 6 games or more disqualified a player from any kind of discount.

20% discounts

David Armitage, SK CTR. DT $321,100, SC $413,600. 3 games at 91.3 DT, 97.3 SC.

Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, WC CTR (rookie). DT $181,900, SC $185,900. 4 games at 51.8 DT, 37.5 SC.

Similarly, this group all played one to six games last year. Last year there was some position-based delineation over who got what percentage discount, but this seems to have been abandoned for the moment.

30% discounts

Ryan Cook, CO CTR. DT $190,700, SC $231,100. 2 games at 62 DT, 43.5 SC.
Jason Laycock, ES RUC. DT $155,700, SC $204,700. 16 games at 50.1 DT, 54.3 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Jarrhan Jacky, AD FWD. DT $136,600, SC $139,400. 3 games at 44 DT, 37 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Mitch Farmer, RI CTR/BAC. DT $115,000, SC $159,500. 3 games at 37 DT, 42.3 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Brock O’Brien, FR BAC. DT $111,800, SC $164,000. 2 games at 36 DT, 43.5 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Leigh Fisher, SK BAC (rookie). DT $113,900, SC $152,800. 9 games at 36.7 DT, 40.6 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).

33% discounts

Tadhg Kennelly, SY BAC. DT $204,700, SC $320,700. 20 games at 65.9 DT, 85.1 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).

At this point, the VirtualSports boys are just making it up. 😀

40% discounts

Jack Steven, SK CTR. DT $200,400, SC $210,300. 1 games at 76 DT, 66 SC.
Colin Garland, ME BAC. DT $195,100, SC $293,200. 1 games at 74 DT, 92 SC.
Brodie Martin, AD CTR. DT $188,500, SC $221,500. 2 games at 71.5 DT, 69.5 SC.
Xavier Clarke, BL CTR/BAC. DT $168,500, SC $227,900. 7 games at 63.3 DT, 70.6 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Josh Hunt, GE BAC. DT $164,100, SC $252,300. 20 games at 61.7 DT, 78 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).

Your guess is as good as anyone’s as to why Clarke and Hunt are in this category instead of the next one. As with most analysis of the reasoning for these discounts, it’s a waste of time as they’re only going to change it again next year anyway.

50% discounts

Beau Waters, WC BAC. DT $152,800, SC $151,100. 8 games at 68.9 DT, 56.3 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Austin Wonaeamirri, ME FWD. DT $138,700, SC $177,900. 18 games at 62.5 DT, 66.1 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Jesse W. Smith, SK BAC. DT $137,900, SC $220,100. 2 games at 55.5 DT, 73 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Robert Warnock, CA RUC. DT $101,800, SC $132,200. 9 games at 45.9 DT, 49.1 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Henry Playfair, SY FWD (rookie). DT $101,800, SC $107,400. 11 games at 51.3 DT, 62.5 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).
Wayde Skipper, HW RUC (rookie). DT $95,800, SC $101,400. 1 games at 43 DT, 41 SC (2008 figures, missed 2009).

This replaces the old 42% rule, for the most part.

Finally, there are a handful of outliers. Matt Maguire, Rohan Bail, Trent West and Andrew L. Browne get dragged down to at or near prices of $101,500/$99,200. Sean Rusling should really have been priced at the $101,500/$99,200 given he played one match in 2008 for a score of 18 in both DT and SC, but he has been given the seemingly arbitrary prices of $128,900/$161,700. Don’t ask me, I have no idea why.

UPDATE: There are some differences between the SC and DT discounts.
Atkinson, Wilkes, Armitage, Dawes and Macaffer get 30% off in SC, not 20%.
Waite and Tiller gets 20% off in SC, not 10%.
Daniher gets 10% off in SC, not 20%.
Broadbent, McNamara, Steven Browne, Buckley and Sam Reid get no SC discount instead of 20% in DT.
Wilson, Cornelius and Schulz get no SC discount instead of 20% in DT.
Cockie, Eddy, Ross, Cameron Cloke, Moran and Gamble get zero SC discount as opposed to 10% in DT.
Jay Nash and Matt Suckling get a 30% SC discount but nothing in DT.
Matthew O’Dwyer, Matthew Leuenberger, Jonathan Griffin and Trent Hentschel get a 20% SC discount but nothing in DT.
Brett Burton, Brad Fisher, Andrew Walker and Amon Buchanan get a 10% SC discount but nothing in DT.

anyone keen on 60 70 from waters providing he makes it through the NAB?

Rumour from the Essendon board is Hille was not great in the practice match and was heard letting the odd F bomb go. Selective journalism apparently. I suppose to expect anything other than speculation and fact twisting frm the Herald Sun would be silly though.

Long time reader, 1st time poster, however, Im confussed Monty. The figures Im looking at in Supercoach arnt matching alot of the figures you are listing here in your article for supercoach pricing.

    For example:
    Matt Maguire is $114,000
    Robert Warnock is $132,200
    Kennelly is $320,700

Am I missing something? Am I going crazy…. cos that is likely…

Come on Monty, I greatly appreciate your effort but the supercoach prices are all up the spout. Buckley is out by $51000

I think you left David Hille off the list. He should fall into the 20% category.

Rory Sloane was a player I was really keen on before the prices were released. Monty do you know why he has not received a discount as previously mentioned by Webbcrow. 1 game @ 40 yet still fully priced???

Also it is a great shame that a potentially good thread (overhyped players) was destroyed by a couple of sledgers. Rather than close the discussion perhaps block the idiots who turn it into a personal hate session
