Star Sainter: The FanFooty Superstar

by m0nty | May 26th, 2009 | Comments : [109] | Categories: Meta.
Paul Montgomery

We’re introducing our first FanFooty player award, and one of the current co-leaders may surprise you.

I have been ruminating on this concept for a little while now. The idea is taken from FanFooty’s successful live scoring pages, which have become famous for the little icons next to most player names. indicating news about them, including form and injury status. Over time, I have developed intricate rules for how each icon is allocated and when, which are explained on the page itself as in the one for this week’s Friday night game, and I have largely followed these rules for every game.

AFL Rd 7 - St Kilda v GeelongFor instance, the star is awarded only once per game, to the player who I think would be awarded best on ground, especially in the Brownlow. The gun, also awarded only once (except on very rare occasion!), is a more fantasy-specific award. The heart is usually reserved for players who play through injury or other adversity for a decent score. The “hot” symbol, known as the fireball or sun, is for players who are on track for or have reached a Dream Team ton. Finally, the garbage bin symbol is for players who rack up meaningless stats during junk time when a game is well and truly over as a contest… but those points mean just as much in Dream Team as when the heat was on!

Following these rules, I have decided to award votes for each game on the following basis:

: 5 votes
: 4 votes
: 3 votes
: 2 votes
: 1 vote

The FanFooty Superstar page lists all the votes by round and the cumulative totals. I was interested myself to see who was leading, given that I have allocated out the icons without reference to any award. Gary Ablett jnr has dropped behind with his injury layoff, leaving the ever-reliable Dean Cox and Saint Leigh Montagna in the lead. Montagna has racked up three stars, two guns and a fireball, while Cox has just the one star, a heart, four guns and a fireball. GAJ has three stars and two guns, with Steve Johnson in fourth with two stars, one heart and two guns.

I’m not sure if any conclusions can be deriven from any of this… perhaps those of you who are betting on the likes of Lenny Hayes for the Brownlow might take a second look at Montagna’s odds? Interesting to see that Leon Davis does not figure all that prominently, as he is currently second behind Ablett in the Super Coach Brownlow votes.

I don’t know what I’ll be able to do with the final results, as I’m not sure I’d be allowed to present the winner with his prize… and I don’t know what I’d give him anyway. A FanFooty cap, maybe? A permanent colour in the FF chat? :D

I would have personally had the Heart and the Gun symbol swapped around. 4 point for the Gun and 3 for the Heart. But good idea none the less mOnty.

Huge Action Says: 4:30 am, May 26th, 2009

interesting stuff - though when it comes to the brownlow Sc scores are perhaps a more reliable source of information. though who knows what goes through the umps minds when cooney beats ablett for the charlie…

Adam Says: 5:13 am, May 26th, 2009

good idea but really not relevant when talking about brownlow votes. Ur icons are are all points related ie - the more you have the better the symbol u will have. What if i guy had 20 spoils and 5 smothers at centre half back and his opponent didnt touch it. Thats a best on performance but he might have had 30 DT. The points only tell you who had a lot of the footy except of course the tackles.

Tom Says: 6:48 am, May 26th, 2009

Interesting concept but you might have to change some symbol criteria.

eg, As it stands the symbol worth the most points has nothing to do with DT scores. The gun is also a bit problematic - prejudiced by default to the most consistent performer rather than the best on the day. And a player on 40 at 3/4 time that finishes on 70 will often get the bin, whereas a player with 95 may get nothing.

Spot the Dog Says: 7:24 am, May 26th, 2009

nice one monty. Not a bad system at all… i don’t see why you could’ve give the player a little trophy at the end of season… would make for pretty interesting footage actually… maybe the fanfootylow medal, or the brownfan…

Disgruntled member Says: 8:23 am, May 26th, 2009

Hey Monty

I am appalled with the profanity of language published on this site.

The moderators need to weed out these comments and ban continuos offenders.
The wannabe Brendon Fevola you are a disgrace, you need to understand minors are also readers of this site.

If you are looking for a kick loiter elsewhere.

SM Says: 9:00 am, May 26th, 2009

Surely Swan and Bartel should be in Top 10?

Hooligan Says: 9:09 am, May 26th, 2009

Mum likes my haircut.

Goldmoss Says: 9:55 am, May 26th, 2009

My only critisism with the system would be that only DT guns are eligible for the gun. Therefore its weighted (ever so slightly) towards the good players.

eg: Say Bryce Gibbs scores 104 he may well get the gun - 3 points. In the same game if Paul Bower scores 120 (and is clearly second best on ground) he can only possibly score 2 points. Its not an even playing field.

Fenez Says: 10:17 am, May 26th, 2009

@ adam - if a guy gets 20 spoils and 5 smothers he probably isnt gonna get any brownlow votes anyway!

Umpires dont look at backman. I agree with other comments that the heart should be lowered. I reckon down to two points, above the bin.

I think you should be giving a medal or something to the winner m0nty, because i noticed early in the year someone commented in the player chat that players dont get a medal for getting more fantasy points. Well maybe they should!

Clint Says: 10:51 am, May 26th, 2009

yes i agree with Migz, great concept but the Heart and Gun should be swapped around

MortGoldmon Says: 11:33 am, May 26th, 2009

M0nty you should incorporate the spud and the gone cold as part of the scoring system. -2 for gone cold and -5 for the spud, and send Leigh brown a bag of spuds when he wins

LeatherHed Says: 11:47 am, May 26th, 2009

Yea I agree star, gun, heart and sun (in that order). But im not sure that the bin counts for anything in terms of the Brownlow, as these players rack up their possessions once the game is done and dusted.

Also, @ Goldmoss, I’d argue that the brownlow is weighted (ever so slightly) towards the good players anyway..

FIRESWORD Says: 12:01 pm, May 26th, 2009

i disagree i think monty has it right in this order
star : 5 votes
heart : 4 votes
gun : 3 votes
sun: 2 votes
bin: 1 vote

Mackie B/E? Says: 12:09 pm, May 26th, 2009

Mackies BE seams a bit high. After a 101 and 72 and now it is saying his BE is 117. Seams a bit high for a 329k player.

Is this right?

FIRESWORD Says: 12:18 pm, May 26th, 2009

yes if he only scored 101 then 72 it is way to high…

Sammy H Says: 12:29 pm, May 26th, 2009

No update again, Monty? Just this rubbish?

OK, back to footy tragic. At least those guys keep their promises.

mackie Says: 12:31 pm, May 26th, 2009

his be is 77

peppers Says: 12:32 pm, May 26th, 2009

yeah you would probably need to change the criteria for each symbol. For example, there would be about 7 ‘guns’ playing in say a Geelong versus St Kilda game. Is it fair to only award a single gun in this game? Players in good teams would be penalised by this system (i.e. Joel Corey).

As an aside, perhaps you also give points to players who are ‘UP’ on their usual average but do not qualify for other points…

The black monkey Says: 12:55 pm, May 26th, 2009

Why isn’t it:

5: star
4: gun
3: heart
2: hot
1: bin

or you don’t even really need the bin because Travis Cloke didn’t deserve a vote in round 2.

where has that mitch kid gone he was doing and alright job of those round wraps.

you did well last week monty with the review after each night but this week all you give us is the footy superstar?

sc scores are a little more relavant when it comes to BOG’s

also YES the idea of permanant colour in ff chat would be good for winner

Lakey91 Says: 1:21 pm, May 26th, 2009

Oh montagna does not surprise me at all! Had him from the start and has provide some outstanding scores this far. Absolute beauty!

Looks a good system monty - i like it.

Lakey91 Says: 1:25 pm, May 26th, 2009

Oh, and i dont think bowden would be in the 5 :p

Toolavich Says: 1:33 pm, May 26th, 2009

It all adds to the fun of it Monty with a serious edge.

Keep up the great work!

Would like to see a few more funny icons along the lines of the famous spud.

Try not to take much notice of the kiddies chucking tanties either. Might be an idea Monty as * Disgruntled member * above suggests to start handing out weekend suspensions to incessant abusers on the live chat on game days.

Cheers.

Bleh Says: 1:40 pm, May 26th, 2009

The bin should be removed as it is only rewarded to those who scored well when the game was already over. Thus meaning they had very little impact on the game and don’t deserve much recognition.

Instead maybe a 3-2-1 point system:
Star: 3
Gun/Heart: 2
Hot: 1

ckson Says: 2:07 pm, May 26th, 2009

stupid idea… dont flatter urself monty comparing this to the brownlow..

Grinners Says: 3:07 pm, May 26th, 2009

Interesting to not that there are 5 games you have awarded no Gun and 4 with no Star. That despite some fantastic performances in those games (fantasy and general.) Ryder’s Anzac game being o prime example.

By your own definition the star is for the player most likely to get best on ground, so there should be one in EVERY game. I can only assume in the games where you haven’t awarded a star that the umpires will agree not to give out the 3 Brownlow votes as no one was deserving.

Nice system you have going. :S

Oxym0ron Says: 3:08 pm, May 26th, 2009

In context m0nty, I don’t think a fireball is worth 2 point and the gun only worth 3

I would give the fireball 1 point

I think you might use this for a rough guide on the Brownlow which is a flawed system anyway.

This also conjures up the SC and DT argument for me because I think effective use is a very much better measure of a great footballer.

rob85 Says: 3:38 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ Grinners!!

I’ll think you will find that Ryder got a medal on anzac day…which is the same as the star!!

@ Everyone that thinks m0nty is trying to be serious.

m0nty is just putting a number value on his symbols for a bit of fun and so you can see what it would look like. He is not suggestiong that who ever wins it you should be your house on for the brownlow! Get a life and smile once in a while will you.

@ EVERYONE
I have been looking at this site for just over a year. It has been getting worse. and it isn’t m0ntys fault. Alot of people come here just to argue and say stupid things just to get a rise from people.

I also hate on the chats where people are hoping players of our great game to get injuried. Or where they abuse great players of our game because they aren’t scoring 100 points for them. I can assure you that every player on every AFL list gives 100 percent ever time they step on to the field.

Here is a plea to all that use Fanfooty. For the greater good can we all just grown up and use this site for what it was intended. A great source to share and to gather information for our fatansy side.

Take fantasy football for what it is, A fun game that gets people involved and interested in every game that is played on the weekend.

Maybe some of you might want to go watch a game (god knows our teams need it) and not sit in front of the computer screen and watch your numbers go up.

Black Cock Says: 3:46 pm, May 26th, 2009

Monty i would give the fireball 1 point, although this is an interesting concept keep up the good work.

Toolavich Says: 3:47 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ rob85 *claps*

Brady Says: 4:02 pm, May 26th, 2009

yeah
heart and gun should be swapped around

i hate glen jakovich Says: 4:12 pm, May 26th, 2009

cool concept monty. but switch heart and gun.

Pierce (Environment) Brosnan Says: 4:13 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ rob85

You’ve been using this site now for over a year, noticed that it’s been progressively getting worse and somehow it’s not Montys fault? It’s his fault and any other administrator who is involved with sites fault. The last several weeks have been a joke.
I only use this site for the delayed scores on free to air games and can’t remember the last time a Friday night game had delayed scores available from the first bounce. It usually works about midway through the second quarter and if lucky remains for the rest of the game, but this of late has been a stretch.
If someone could tell me of another site which has delayed scores I would glady pierce off.
And for those of you about to have a crack at me over my comments please accept my “eat a fat one” in advance.

randy Says: 4:15 pm, May 26th, 2009

Think the idea is a waste of time. If this site is about fantasy foty then the player with the most points at the end of the season should win. Simple.

None of the other crap is relevant.

The black monkey Says: 4:29 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ Pierce

Firstly do you have a life?

Secondly we all hope you PISS off because you’re not doing this site any good whatsoever.

Go create your own website that gets as many hits as this.

p.s i’d rather not eat your fat one

stick to protecting the environment
create a website for that, tell us all and i would take pleasure in bagging it along with the others here

taylz Says: 4:34 pm, May 26th, 2009

PIERCE URE A KNOB i only use this site for delayed games but im on here right now reading this blog and leaving a reply. so clearly im an egg and lie and dont make sense. so eat my fat one cause im a loser.

i hate glen jackovich Says: 4:38 pm, May 26th, 2009

shut up pierce u poof, u complaining abot a fantasy footy site. GET A LIFE!

Jacko Says: 4:41 pm, May 26th, 2009

Monty, i think i would still prefer a weekend wrap than this. an interesting(ish) read but thats it.

hilly Says: 4:53 pm, May 26th, 2009

The BE’s are dodgy, whats going on

Swan had 97 and 158 and you have his BE at 153… It seems about 70 or 80 too high to me

BIG dean COX Says: 4:56 pm, May 26th, 2009

@Pierce

I agree that this site has been substandard of late. You are entitled to complain. Of course Monty does a good job, but lets not forget he makes money off this site. If people are paying to advertise on his site and the site is crashing or really crap, then Monty is not honouring his investors.

Don’t forget everyone..this site is not made totally out of love for fantasy footy…Monty also make cash from it.

So people are allowed to complain if the site is shit.

At least Pierce is trying to save the environment!! What did you ever do?

PS Monty, please remove your photo from your posts as it makes me want to vomit.

hilly Says: 4:58 pm, May 26th, 2009

Agree about the photo…

Not a good looking bloke

BIG dean COX Says: 5:02 pm, May 26th, 2009

just kidding monty you are a sexy man…………..deeeeliiiciuos……..mmmmm cherry flavoured!!

crazytoma Says: 5:14 pm, May 26th, 2009

Hello Monty and thanks for your website.

I too am growing concerned at the lack of delayed scores for a friday night game.

How else can I follow my 4 zeros each week without ruining the match result?

Is there a particular cause for the problem?

@rob85

Part of the fun of fantasy footy is hoping dane swan does his knee so I win against my eliminator opponent. It’s not personal, but everyone except you does it.

Example, Roger Hayden flowered his calf. Makes me happy because I have Broughton and Pearce(not enviroment Pierce) in my team. But I don’t have anything against Hayden.

So this week Rob85…you get the CHOP!!!!

Go warnedawgs you are legend!!!!

crazytoma Says: 5:19 pm, May 26th, 2009

Kind of look like John “true blue” Williamson???

Locky Says: 5:20 pm, May 26th, 2009

Monty, have u considered an icon for downhill skiiers? Players whose fantasy scores are only high when their teams are winning? (ie Milne and Stokes) or conversely an uphill skiier icon for when their teams are losing and as a result have very few points to their name?

Raf Says: 5:20 pm, May 26th, 2009

Monty, there’s a few games on the Superstar list which have no star awarded: e.g. Ess v Coll on Anzac Day, North v Port in Round 7 and a few others. Any plans to go back and fix those games now that it “matters” for something?

Raf Says: 5:24 pm, May 26th, 2009

Actually, since Leon Davis would have got the star or at least the gun on Anzac Day, that’s probably one of the reasons his score is not that prominent…

oddsok Says: 5:46 pm, May 26th, 2009

One aspect I do not like about this approach is that it favours players that are ‘expected’ to do well. For example look at Leon Davis. He has been outstanding in DT this year, but at the beginning of the year no one would’ve seen him as a ‘gun’, therefore he was getting firballs over guns, and is now getting guns over fireballs. A similar thing applies to Montagna, I persoanlly wouldn’t have thought of him as a DT gun and therefore he’d be getting more fireballs than guns.

Disgruntled member Says: 5:58 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ Jarrad

You clearly did not see the comments that were written as Monty has deleted it.
Hopefully that idiot will be banned for the rest of the year.

PS: I am no pansie, just a dad who has an 11 year old, who shares this site with me.

Chuck Norris Says: 6:15 pm, May 26th, 2009

I guess it’s a good thing in a small time villagey way. I love what Monty’s done so far - but this thing needs to grow. THis fantasy footy site concept will be emulated soon by better, more skilled cashed up operators.

Monty - think big before the exodus eventually happens. You really need to make serious meaningful contact with your site users as in social events, services. If you dont do it sooner rather tha later - someone else will. Please Monty - sieze the day.

the dud Says: 6:16 pm, May 26th, 2009

Masterchef (respect your ingredients) Guy Says: 7:16 pm, May 26th, 2009

Well that was an exciting read, yeah?

Much better than reading a weekly wrap and discussing who did well, and who people are keeping an eye on…

Masterchef (respect your ingredients) Guy Says: 7:16 pm, May 26th, 2009

What a bunch of shiite… yeah?

FIRESWORD Says: 7:20 pm, May 26th, 2009

yeah i agree this was cr@p

Brendan Says: 8:13 pm, May 26th, 2009

Wat?
This post and concept is interesting because its not the same old same old.

Masterchef (respect your ingredients) Guy Says: 8:35 pm, May 26th, 2009

I’m sure all the brownlow judges are really interested in whether gary ablett gets a picture of a sun next his name on a fantasy football site. Get some perspective yeah?

Masterchef (respect your ingredients) Guy Says: 8:40 pm, May 26th, 2009

The thing that makes this site worthwhile is the discussion about players in regards to playing DT or SC. Match reviews, writers’ opinions and more often the opinion of other forum members are what people log on for, yeah?

Not betting odds or some half-baked thing about monty’s little pictures.

Get your core business right before this crap… yeah?

benno Says: 8:50 pm, May 26th, 2009

@ Pierce
sometimes the live scores link line doesn’t come up first time you go to the site when there’s a game on. just refresh the page, and it should appear straight away.

@everyone else
people can complain if they want to. that’s the strange thing about blogs - we go to them every day and it becomes part of our life, giving us a sense that we have some kind of ownership of the site, right or wrong.
that’s why it was so disappointing that the regular blogging and the fresh content dropped off *after* our presence, and the site’s popularity, had been parlayed into a bunch of new advertising - including the betfair-owned blog.
get us hooked, then sell our eyes, while delivering less? not a great model.

SammyH Says: 9:16 pm, May 26th, 2009

Monty, the crowd is turning, and you still don’t seem to feel the need to address us. We’ve come here every day for 1 to 3 years, got your numbers up, tolerated your junior burger commentators and in return?

You disrespect your regulars, provide shoddier services, while clearly making some $$$ from advertising (particularly Betfair, whom we can’t even comment on, while you’re getting the kids hooked on gambling; I refer you to Mike Sheahan’s article in today’s Herald Sun).

WAKE UP!

I have posted numerous times, without using offensive language, simply asking you for an update or an explanation and NOT ONCE have I had a response. NOR HAS ANYONE ELSE.

The second these stats are available off the AFL website and off this one, I am gone. And I will never be back.

Footytragic for their wrap.

Dreamteamtalk for captain’s and boys on the bubble.

Fanfooty for fu*k all - you seem to forget every second week anyway.

YOU ARE A DISGRACE!

WosrttDreamTeamerEVERintheHistoryofSTupidNamesthatAreWayTooLONG Says: 9:34 pm, May 26th, 2009

Athomas Says: 10:00 pm, May 26th, 2009

this is shizen.

who the fuck cares…

so the spud is -10??

m0nty Says: 10:06 pm, May 26th, 2009

Geez, you blokes are talkative today.

First, I have been out playing golf all day today, as I do every Tuesday. I work all weekend, and I need a day off. I’m pretty tired now, as I always am on a Tuesday night, but you guys do deserve some sort of answer on blog frequency.

Second, I’m not sure why some of you are quite so riled up about this issue. A couple of you seem to have taken it upon yourselves to be my personal nemesis, or something, which is pretty weird when you think about it. Is abusing me or threatening me going to have a positive effect? Do you think that bargaining with me or calling me names helps in any way? I am just not on your wavelength.

Third, yes, I am disappointed in myself too when I don’t abide by my own deadlines. I would like to post as often as ESPN’s Matthew Berry, deliver a comprehensive news snippet service like Rotoworld, produce a pro-quality video podcast like DT Talk, etc etc. You will notice that DT Talk has about six blokes, Footy Tragic has three, Rotoworld has a bunch of paid writers, ESPN is a multi-million dollar company, and on and on. I am just one bloke. I would argue that I already do more work than any one person out there in providing fantasy Australian footy content, when you add up the live game stuff, the podcast, blogs, database work, admin crap, plus the huge amount of coding that I do which you don’t see. Yes, I would like to do more, but I only have so much energy, especially on a Monday when I’m burnt out.

Fourth, to be brutally honest, blogging doesn’t actually earn me anything, because it represents a tiny percentage of FF’s page views. The week before last, for example, when I did a full complement of eight blog posts, the blog represented just 1.13% of FF’s total traffic. The forum did three times as much as the blog and I give that almost zero effort! The blog is just not worth my time on a monetary basis. I am spending most of my midweek hours on non-FF projects which actually do pay me decent coin, so that I can continue to fund a lifestyle where I do have time and money to keep FanFooty up and running.

Having said that, I do continue to want to blog on a regular basis, but I am struggling to fit it in with all the other stuff I have going on right now. I hope that answers your questions, even if you don’t agree with my priorities.

Hank jnr Says: 10:38 pm, May 26th, 2009

Tricky Says: 11:10 pm, May 26th, 2009

Relax everyone….

It’s a free site. If you don’t like it, just don’t come to this website.

It’s like complaining at a restaurant, which sells bad food. If you don’t like it, why would you go to it. In addition, why would you go to it and complaint? Waste of time if you ask me.

Disco (UK) Says: 11:41 pm, May 26th, 2009

@m0nty - you don’t have to justify anything. It’s your website mate, and a great one at that.

micklovin Says: 11:48 pm, May 26th, 2009

Geeeeeeezzzzz is everyone on here suddenly on the brownlow voting panel? FFS give mOnty a break, the guy’s doin us all a service (and a fine 1 at that) and all most of u can do is pick out everything wrong with this…

He didn’t tell you to place your brownlow bets according to the site dammit! Settle the f*ck down!

I do however agree with the 1 post mOnty, gun = 4 and heart = 3

m0nty Says: 11:55 pm, May 26th, 2009

Heart gets more votes than gun because the player has had to work harder for the points, in my opinion. Others are right to point out that the gun tends to get put on good players just because they’re good in general, not because they stood out in a particular game. That’s why the heart gets 4.

Manikato1 Says: 12:05 am, May 27th, 2009

Last few weeks have not been up to your usual standard Monty. Having said that this seems to have been the case ever since the newspaper article that mentioned FF appeared so I’m guessing you are feeling the strain of a one man show that has suddenly hit the limelight.

As for the DH who keeps mentioning you make money of this site so what. WE PAY NOTHING. If you buy your ticket to the show then you get the right to complain but when it is a freebie shut up and go somewhere else.

As for the blogging you need to filter the language Monty. I can swear with the best of the them but the DH’s who swear just for the sake of it do nothing but show that they are DH’s. And it contributes nothing

You need a partner Monty. One who has the money to upgrade the site and bring in the support you need but is still willing to give you control of content and let you spend time doing research etc to write the interesting stuff we punters can never work out or think of for ourselves.

Get one quick before someone else gets the jump on you.

m0nty Says: 12:13 am, May 27th, 2009

Manikato1, such a person does not exist, or I just haven’t found them yet.

The bottom line is that FanFooty is not currently making enough money for me to devote 100% of my time to it. That may change in the future as the site grows and the economy improves. Believe me, I am more frustrated about this situation than any of you - I have been at this for four years now.

As for someone else coming in and “stealing” what I’ve done here… they’ll have to go through four years of the crap I’ve had to put up with first! ;D

Manikato1 Says: 1:06 am, May 27th, 2009

You just haven’t found them yet. But things are on the improve as your advertising has increased considerably. Persist or perish. If you are gunna do something do it with passion or don’t do it at all.

Dicko Says: 1:36 am, May 27th, 2009

Pay no attention to the abuse Monty. If they don’t like the site they should go elsewhere, if they have a valid point to make , it should be made politely. Some people reckon the world owes them whatever they want. Keep up the good work!

benno Says: 1:42 am, May 27th, 2009

@tricky: of course it’s free mate - it’s the internet. only some p0rn isn’t.
what if it’s you favourite restaurant, where you have been going for ages, that suddenly changes the menu and the decor? well you would have a word with the owner, who by that stage would feel like someone you knew.

m0nty, and there we were thinking you were doing it for the love. i think yr blogs are great - live chat is just a way to waste time talking shit during games and no-one really comments much on the sc forum.

i’m trying to be a nemesis, but i have considered it cause the betfair blog is really offensive. i feel like a john laws fan after cash-for-comment.

i like reading about footy and this has been a great place to do so. i only get to visit when my woman and baby have gone to sleep, so i find the loud popup ads quite bloody rude.

by the way i think yr spot on with the ratings points.

m0nty Says: 1:55 am, May 27th, 2009

Do you blokes go over to DT Talk and complain about their Sportingbet material? I don’t see any in their comments on their latest betting post. How about the Herald-Sun and Sportsbet? Or the Richmond Football Club and Luxbet?

benno: I don’t have a day job, unlike the DT Talk boys, so I have to spend time making money to eat and pay rent. I don’t think I have to apologise for that.

Disco (UK) Says: 3:02 am, May 27th, 2009

Gotta hate Generation Y, not prepaired to work for anything, expect everything to be handed to them for free. Paris Hilton worshippers…

Love how the vocal minority have plenty of advice on how to run a website business ‘you gotta do this’, ‘i think you should do this’, ‘you need this’ yet none of you run a successful website nor have run a business and are probably undergraduates, at best.

@benno - mate, its not cash-for-comment, look it up. monty is not making comments for cash and passing it off as his own opinion or as editorial commentary. Quite clearly its a guy from Betfair [Nick T]. Plus, under eighteens can’t open a Betfair account. Perhaps a Betfair logo and an obvious disclaimer, along the lines of ‘dont drink acid’, is needed, at worst. Give it a rest.

Resch Says: 6:22 am, May 27th, 2009

I get information from many sites. DTTalk, Tooserious, Big Footy etc. I check them, if they have anything interesting, I stay, if they don’t I go to another site. No dramas.

Like many I have been coming to Fanfooty since it began. In the days prior to head to head scoring (when you could get SC scores live!) I used it to update my spreadsheets. It is still my primary site for scores during the weekend and the simple interface with a few comments is brilliant. If it doesn’t refresh, I press refresh and get the scores - no issue.

Monty’s advice pre-season has been gold and a fantastic help. For that I am grateful.

Any content during the season is interesting and insightful, but if it is not here I go somewhere else - pretty simple really. I takes seconds and no physical work.

Thanks for everything Monty. At least with all the abuse it has made people who appreciate all your work over the years come out and support you. I won’t be going away.

Simonoz Says: 6:23 am, May 27th, 2009

Mony - great site - but I do wish there were more blogs though and less abusive posts to you, achieves nothing.

With that said, I’m not sure you can really compare page views on the forum Vs the blogs.

A blog is on one page vs many pages for the forums. So click thru’s will be far greater on the forums as you go to each topic etc….whereas a blog is opened once and scrolled down and read multiple times.

Also - its the information / format here on FF blogs that brought most here to begin with…ie…..the blogs is where it all started.

I’m pretty sure that if all that is left here are the forums, then its no longer a FF website and just a place for the rabble to post, and 50% of the forum posts are just plain not relevant….not sure how to mod that though.

The blogs drive this site mate - everything else lives because of them.

If you need help….there are certainly some great guys on here in the know that would gladly help….you probably know of about a dozen posters on here that you’ve known for a while and respect their thoughts & opinions.

You could Guest Blog each week to one of these, and we the readers can ‘comment’ etc each week on their input and vote or something….much like you did with Mitch.

I dont think it would be hard to find a dozen guys, one a week, to guest blog for you……they could just email over to you Sunday night their Round Rewind, or a Rookie Review or something….

Keep it up mate - everything always needs to be tinkered with unfortunately :)

Simon

The black monkey Says: 7:57 am, May 27th, 2009

Get that Mitch kid back if you want more blogs

BIG dean COX Says: 9:18 am, May 27th, 2009

Geeeez. Talk about not being able to take a bit of feedback. we only raise these issues to better your site monty. Its not that we don’t want to use FF, thats the whole point! bloody hell……….blog this!

Sammy H Says: 9:58 am, May 27th, 2009

Unfair comment, Marty, the DT boys don’t restrict comment and the fella there picks his own bet.

The Sportsbet advertising they have doesn’t offer “sure things” but does give users with existing accounts free bets.

Fair difference.

Also, why so defensive? I’ve started forum threads devoted to you sorting out your time maintenance issues, seeking alternatives, etc… look it up, sunshine.

And Disko (UK). Just stay there, mate.

Dicko Says: 10:21 am, May 27th, 2009

Changing the subject. Anyone have the true word on Higins? Also I heard a rumour that Liam Anthony had broken his hand and would be out even longer, any truth?

crazytoma Says: 11:39 am, May 27th, 2009

Don’t get that Mitch kid back.

BIG dean COX Says: 2:05 pm, May 27th, 2009

@crazytoma

I agree mitch was not a welcome addition to FF.

Howie Says: 2:28 pm, May 27th, 2009

Leave Mitch alone and leave Monty alone. Go take your aggresion out on your tools, get on Redtube and flog off.
If you dont like this site then go elsewhere.
That simple

Howie Says: 2:30 pm, May 27th, 2009

Dicko, its Hurley with the broken hand I believe

RatPack Says: 2:52 pm, May 27th, 2009

Hey Monty, you have FF caps? How can we get hold of one?

masterchef (respect your ingredients yeah!) Says: 3:55 pm, May 27th, 2009

Good idea monty, and dont steal my name whoevers doin it. gun should be before heart though

tom Says: 4:01 pm, May 27th, 2009

@m0nty, i’d defs by a fanfooty t-shirt so would a whole lot of other geezers on this site

m0nty Says: 4:24 pm, May 27th, 2009

I have changed the FF blog comments so that you can only log in and post using your FanFooty username.

RatPack Says: 5:10 pm, May 27th, 2009

Hey Monty, if you don’t already have merchandise, think of the possibilities, caps, tshirts, mousemats, even barmats :)
I can get you in touch with someone who makes all types of merchandise.

Lakey91 Says: 5:34 pm, May 27th, 2009

Monty - youve got a great site, with information (especially the fantasy statistics) in a fantastic setup that is easily accessible.

While i understand your time committments, a few more blogs (not just match reports) but maybe about upgrade targets, good rookies etc would be good.

Also - is there somewhere on this site with a link to donate? FFgenie Tooserious accept donations for their work, and while it may not bring in a great deal of cash im sure the hearty souls who love fanfooty will contribute every now and then.

Oh, and im sure finding another couple of bloggers would help a bit too.

Overall - top site, and i cant see why anyone would ever complain!

SuperAlex Says: 5:35 pm, May 27th, 2009

I am the true masterchef. You are merely an insignificant fool. Yeah?

SuperAlex Says: 5:39 pm, May 27th, 2009

Lakey is right… lots of good stuff here, but I think a lot of people come on to talk about potential trades (and rubbish other peoples’ ideas of potential trades), and all you have to do (or get someone to do it for you) is provide a current space to do it.

You’re getting some pretty powerful feedback here, and some solutions… why wouldn’t you listen?

turts111 Says: 5:43 pm, May 27th, 2009

wow m0nty, some interesting stuff here. i think u do a great job mate, but i think fantasy footy is taking over the world, and people are willing to pay a small amount for the best site available to them. dont get left behind m0nty.

m0nty Says: 5:44 pm, May 27th, 2009

I am listening, SuperAlex.

Lakey91: I don’t believe in donations. Just a personal thing.

As for other bloggers, my email is always open if someone wants to put their hand up.

camross Says: 6:02 pm, May 27th, 2009

Hi Monty really enjoy the site i think the Bin should be -1 not 1 as really why should you get any points if you did nothing when the game was hot.

dylan123 Says: 6:03 pm, May 27th, 2009

turts111 im not so sure he would get that many people paying to use the site. Lots of people that go on this site are under the age of 18 so they would need their parents to pay online since they would not be able to, which i know i would not ask my parents to pay(might just be me). Once im over 18 i would not mind paying for the site because i could do it myself but again thats prob just me.

also m0nty just another idea even though you are probably sick to death of them but is it possible that you could set up like a weekly blog thing with just a trade topic/ideas where it has Upgrades/Downgrade/ideas/questions and all we have to do is just fill it in. This would then allow us to talk between each other without you having to spend a large amount of time writing this since you could use the same thing every week.

m0nty Says: 6:32 pm, May 27th, 2009

dylan123: I know that DT Talk and others have that forms-based type of post but I’m not into that, myself. I know it makes it easier for you guys to comment, but I’d rather you wrote in complete sentences and thought a bit more about what to say. Of course, I’d be more than happy for that sort of thread to exist on the forums.

jehan Says: 8:49 pm, May 27th, 2009

nice to see you replying more monty, its what the fans want.

SuperAlex Says: 9:09 pm, May 27th, 2009

Weekly wrap, anyone??????????????

TeamLactos Says: 11:14 pm, May 27th, 2009

Just My idea on the points scoring thingy.
Why not give every player a score from 44 to 1 based on there points for the game. eg. highest points scorer gets 44 points 2nd highest gets 43 ect ect then also give BONUS points for the gun, heart, star ect. maybe 20 for star 10 for heart.

Just my 2 cents worth. cheers.
BTW monty can i please be un banned yet. cheers

bendylan Says: 1:43 am, May 28th, 2009

benno here, having to use my username bendylan now that access has changed.
m0nty, i was just joking about doing it all for the love. it’s too much work for that.
no, i don’t go to those other sites and complain ’cause i don’t respect them much and don’t expect much from their site. dream team talk is all commercial and full of faff, the herald sun - we expect them to be controversial and their supercoach stats are way below par. and richmond? well they have to take gambling money ’cause they’re desperate. perhaps there’s a nice victoria st smack dealer who would like to advertise with them too.
i have complained about this site because this has been the best. the others won’t offend me cause i won’t be there (except tooserious).

@disco(UK): thanks for the explanation mate. once again you have added next to nothing to the discussion. my point was that a blog, in the same format as monty and mitchell’s, which even has monty’s pic on it, from an advertiser, looks to me like advertising masquerading as editorial content. next comes banning people who criticise advertisers.

while we’re at it, i’m not a fan of anyone’s partnerships with betting companies.

but that’s enough on that for now. i think the extent of this (varied) discussion shows these issues are well worth thinking about.

Disco DB Says: 3:28 am, May 28th, 2009

@bendylan - ok, fair enough. I thought it was pretty obvious [that the betfair blog was an ad], but I forgive you if you see it differently, and it’s fair enough that you don’t agree with advertising gambling. From my perspective, unfortunately advertising is essential to this website and FanFooty can’t pick and choose [just yet], so the website exists because of it.

Disco DB Says: 3:30 am, May 28th, 2009

@bendylan - BTW, @Disco (UK) is me.

djch00k Says: 8:55 am, May 28th, 2009

I can understand the clamour for more blog posts (I come looking for a new one every day because I value m0nty’s opinions/analysis highly), but don’t be too hard on him - they eat up more time than Stuart Dew eats chickens.

The one I write over at DT Talk can take hours to compile (I know, you’d have guessed five minutes given it’s crapness). A decent one, like Calvin’s Captains, takes a lot longer. There’s no way I could pump out more than one a week. Warnie does, but he’s a machine.

The point is that, as much as we love ‘em, expecting m0nty to post every other day on top of the other services he provides is expecting a lot of one bloke.

bendylan Says: 12:10 pm, May 28th, 2009

by the way i’d be willing to pay to access fanfooty … 20, 30, 40 bucks a year - particularly if it removed loud popups and bogus betting blogs. i’d pay up happily if it reduced ads and made it sustainable for the bloke who makes the site.
sometimes it’s too good for us to expect to get for free - that’s why we get ads. well i’d pay to have them way reduced. any more money than that and we’d expect a fair bit more content.

m0nty Says: 3:30 pm, May 28th, 2009

Thanks for your support, chook.

bendylan: We’ve been over this, paying for FF hasn’t worked in the past and it won’t work now. There could be some sort of “freemium” model where some parts are free and others (like the blog) are pay-only, but I don’t think that would get all that many takers either - and I could see someone re-posting all the articles somewhere else to subvert the system as a form of protest.

To be honest, you blokes have enough of a sense of entitlement now, imagine if you were actually paying me for something! :P
BTW, I am investigating some merchandise options.

stman Says: 9:05 pm, May 28th, 2009

Dt talk and FF would make one helluva site you all do great work , for something I get for free cheers

FIRESWORD Says: 10:41 pm, May 28th, 2009
