Injuries galore: Round 5 wrap

by Mitch Cleary | April 27th, 2009 | Comments : [142] | Categories: Talking Points.
Mitch Cleary

If you were able to tip eight winners this week, congratulations, you must have a knack for tipping. For the rest of us tipping was very challenging.

You could have gone either way with the game Friday night in which St Kilda pumped Port, Collingwood were favourites on ANZAC day, but yet again disappointed in the final minutes and on Saturday night Richmond and Fremantle managed their first wins of the season.

Injuries could come at a big cost with fantasy sides already feeling the punch from Raines, Anthony, Cousins and Ottens; the list goes on. This week there were some big names casualties; David Hille, Brent Harvey and Matthew Richardson. Hille is out for the season and Harvey will be sidelined for an extended period, while Richo could miss just the one week.

Fantasy favourite, in particular in Dream Team, Bradd Dalziell added to the injury woes up north, he is out for two-three months.

In some more bad news on the injury front, last years Rising Star winner, Rhys Palmer will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury on his right knee and Lachie Hansen will be out for at least a month with a troublesome hamstring.

Luckily there were no major reports to talk of, in what was an average week of Fantasy football.

I have not added the players scores next to their names this week as I presume you already know most of them. If you would like me to in the future, please comment.

St Kilda 15.12.102 def Port Adelaide 5.6.36

Geelong beware. A St Kilda side, who notched their sixth comprehensive win against Port Adelaide, are rampaging and gathering momentum - fast. In the lead up to round 5 it was arguably match of the round; by half time it had become the farce of the round. Port had kicked just nine points to half time (including a dubious free kick which resulted in a goal) compared with St Kilda’s 65. Two sides coming off two big wins were put on the same park, in Aami Stadium and the Saints excelled at every point.

The Saints backline, consisting of great users, Sam Gilbert, Farren Ray and Sam Fisher were too good for a Port Adelaide forward line who had kicked 39 goals in their past fortnight leading into the match. Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes played superbly and reached their breakevens. Leigh Montagna and Jason Gram both reached SC tons despite knocks.

Port Adelaide were beaten in every area, including the fantasy scores. Dominic Cassisi, Steven Salopek and Nathan Krakouer would have pleased their coaches and to a lesser extent Travis Boak and Chad Cornes.

Last year the most talked about lead up to a match was round 17 when the two heavy weights, Geelong and Hawthorn played off. Will round 14 this year be the same as 17 last year? They are already talking of a relocation to the MCG.

Star Man: Lenny Hayes. Leading disposal getter on the ground with 32, which included 12 contested, seven tackles and a goal.

Shocker: Danyle Pearce. Well held by Jones and only could manage 12 disposals.

One to watch: Hamish Hartlett. Second week in a row as the OTW but his price rises this week and with Mitch Robinson not finding a game will you trade for him?

Essendon 13.15.93 def Collingwood 12.16.88

Most ANZAC day matches provide a great contest between the Pies and Bombers and this year was no exception. Like most games played on Saturday and Sunday in the south, the players had to contend with driving rain - nothing compared with what the game was honouring mind you. Only the ‘95 contest could rival this ANZAC day clash. The Pies fans will always look for excuses, this time with injuries, but David Hille went down early leaving the Bombers one short for the whole match.

David Zaharakis, a name probably only known to fantasy coaches and Essendon supporters before 5.30pm Saturday afternoon, stole the show with a goal just seconds out from the siren to get the Bombers over the line. Joffa already had his gold jacket out with the Pies up by 14 points with less than five minutes left, before the Bombers kicked three unanswered goals to steal the win.

Patrick Ryder won the ANZAC Medal and deservedly so, he had to shoulder the ruck duties single-handedly after Hille was struck down in the second minute. Jobe Watson and Brent Stanton played well and Ricky Dyson kicked a beauty as part of the comeback, he was the late replacement for Mark McVeigh.

The usual high scoring pair of Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan combined for 67 touches, 37 of which belonged to Swan to be best for the Pies. Leon Davis had 32, seven tackles and two goals in a great display.

Star Man: Patrick Ryder. The Medal judges got this one right.

Shocker: Anthony Rocca. Kicked the first goal but didn’t do a thing afterwards.

One to watch: Jaxson Barham. Watch the amount of people who jump off him this week.

AFL Rd 8 - Hawthorn v MelbourneHawthorn 11.8.74 def West Coast 7.14.56

Hawthorn should never be challenged against West Coast at Aurora Stadium. The Hawks had an extra day’s break than the Eagles and had to fly three hours less. But that says a lot about Hawthorn’s title defence, wiry and shaky. Hawthorn were lucky their opponents didn’t kick straight, the Eagles had two more scoring shots.

Sam Mitchell continued his up and down season with a massive score and 40 possessions, Gary Moss‘ four goals were golden for the Hawks, he also had 24 touches and nine marks. Jordan Lewis had 34 disposals and Brad Sewell was again impressive with eight tackles.

Dean Cox confirmed his status as the games number one ruckman, he had 31 hit outs and a lazy 30 touches. Matt Priddis had 32 possessions and 10 tackles and Matt Rosa had 35.

Star Man: Sam Mitchell. Was everywhere, especially early, 40 disposals at an efficency of 85% was tremendous.

Shocker: Mark Williams. Just the three disposals, all at 100% efficiency though.

One to watch: Gary Moss.  Has turned into a real find as a fantasy player. His price will never be as low this season as it is now.

Richmond 13.16.94 def North Melbourne 7.16.58

It’s amazing what one win can do for a footy club. After Richmond’s wait for it, SPIRITED win Saturday night people seem to have forgotten they’re hungry for Terry Wallace’s head and turned to thinking of finals time. It is still a long long way off for the Tigers, but if they can continue to play the way they did against the Roos it may become a reality. Both clubs and many fantasy teams lost favourite sons in the early stages (Matthew Richardson and Brent Harvey), but it was the Tigers who looked more hungrier and ready to play.

Mark Coughlan is a cheap fantasy player and a former best & fairest winner at the Tigers, he finally made his return to the top level and looked injury free. He had 16 touches from 69% TOG as Richmond looked to ease him back into the big time. Joel Bowden  and Jordan McMahon did what they do best and Robin Nahas would have pleased those who chose him as a replacement for Hayden Skipworth. Daniel Jackson didn’t have to tag anyone, he seemed better off, finishing with 33 posessions and 11 marks.

Andrew Swallow, Gavin Urquhart and Adam Simpson were the only Roos players to eclipse 20 touches, on a night where Richmond had 406-312 overall. Swallow kicked three to be the only multiple goal scorer and Hamish McIntosh got the better of the ruck duel.

Star Man: Joel Bowden. Played all 100% of the match, had 28 touches and kicked two goals.

Shocker: Richard Tambling. Didn’t want to give it to him but there was no one else. Earned a recall and didn’t show much to prove he wants to keep it.

One to watch: Levi Greenwood. Looked decent on debut and there is a shortage of good defensive rookies.

Fremantle 18.13.121 def Sydney 16.4.100

15 goals were all that were needed by winning teams this weekend in seven of the eight games. The eighth game was this one, Sydney booted 16 goals and just four behinds - some tremendous accuracy. That would have meant nothing to Paul Roos, his Swans didn’t collect the four points. Fremantle kicked 18 sausages and proved they can beat more highly fancied opponents. The Dockers went into the game averaging less than 10 goals a game, they kicked 16 here, they will need to continue the trend of this game if they’re any chance at making the top eight this season.

David Mundy had only 20 possessions but returned the chocolates for his owners this week. Matthew Pavlich found some well needed form, he played large amounts of time in ball and kicked three. Aaron Sandilands was too good for Darren Jolly. The comps tallest player amassed 46 hit outs. Michael Johnson was also among the best for the Dockers.

Brett Kirk was awesome in his 200th, 27 disposals and 12 tackles. Jude Bolton had a game high 13 tackles to add to his 28 touches. Adam Goodes kicked three goals as well as 21 possessions and eight tackles, he may have playedwel enough to pick up a Brownlow vote, he always polls well.

Star Man: Matthew Pavlich. The critics were on his back all week, he did the best thing possible to get them off, perform! When he performs it looks as though his team mates follow as well.

Shocker: Chris Tarrant. The ex-pie played 95% TOG, yet only touches the ball five times.

One to watch: David Mundy. Not a highly-priced player played terrificly. The question is, will he be able to do it week in week out.

Geelong 18.18.126 def Brisbane 5.3.33

Watching this match on T.V you wouldn’t have got the real picture, Geelong were awesome. The conditions didn’t warrant 18 goals from one side but as only Geelong would have been able to do, they conjured the 18 goals. It was freezing, cold and the worst part, windy. A 93-point win was satisfying for those that braved the conditions.

Cameron Mooney and Tom Hawkins would have been in my top five for best-on-grond performances. Two talls, a wet day, it seemed impossible. Yet together they were awesome, each should have finished with five goals but passed up opportuinties, in Mooney’s case to his team mates, for Hawkins to the Lions. If Gary Ablett doesn’t win the Brownlow the umpires have a severe problem. He had 42 touches and two goals, including a pearler in another magical performance that keeps him drawing closer and closer to his father. Jimmy Bartel, Darren Milburn, Joel Selwood and Corey Enright all had a lot of the footy.

The Lions could only manage one DT ton and zero in SC compared with Geelong’s seven and eleven, that probably summed up the match. Jared Brennan and Simon Black would have been among their best. Jonathan Brown kicked three of the Lions five goals.

Star Man: Gary Ablett. Can they build a league so he can go play on his own?

Shocker: Ashley McGrath. Just the eight touches.

One to watch: Brisbane. Most scores were low, so a good week to pick up some bargains.

Carlton 21.7.133 def Western Bulldogs 13.12.90

The odds in the lead up to the match were even and rightly so, two of the most attacking clubs and aesthetically pleasing were matched-up together. The comfort of Etihad Stadium greeted them and conditions were perfect for the game. High tempo, quick and skilful were words you would use to describe the opening three quarters, before Carlton opened up a 27-point buffer at the last break and strolled home to take the four points. They booked themselves third spot on the ladder and the respect from the AFL community.

Their kicking the week before was shocking (9.13), but this week they had just 6 more scoring shots and were better off 66 points. Whatever Brett Ratten and his staff did this week will not be forgotten. As for the Dogs, they have looked out of sorts in the past fortnight and will need to sharpen up this week in the lead-up to their crunch game against the red-hot Saints who will be coming off the back of an extra two-day break, priceless in this day and age.

Kade Simpson continues to fly under the radar and had another 29 touches and two goals, Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs each had 25 disposals and one goal to be among the best for the Blues. Ryan Houlihan earnt back some respect lost from last week, 29 disposals and two goals. Heath Scotland returned well from an absence to have 26 disposals. The Bulldogs forward line is the shortest in the comp, which meant Bret Thornton had no real match-up and roamed free to have 27 touches at 96% efficiency.

To a greater degree than Simpson, Matthew Boyd has flown well under the radar this season. He amassed another ton in DT and SC with 26 disposals. He has scored a ton in both DT and SC in all but one game this season. Brad Johnson kicked four, but had no other genuine help up forward. Shaun Higgins continued his good form, while Daniel Cross had just four kicks among 21 possessions.

Star Man: Heath Scotland. Did well in just his second game this season. 26 disposals at 92% efficiency was a great effort.

Shocker: Nick Stevens. Only the 12 disposals and Eagleton had the better of him.

One to watch: Aaron Joseph. Mesmerising how he still manages a game, murdered by Higgins.

Adelaide 7.9.51 def Melbourne 4.10.34

Just a total of eleven goals between the two sides pretty much sums up this game of football. Just 14,219 people attended this contest, a little over 10% of the whole MCG full. You would have been forgiven if you thought it was an Adelaide home game, they were louder than those from Melbourne, but it wasn’t as if the Demon fans had much to cheer about. Just one goal up until three-quarter-time, they managed three goals in the last quarter, but it was clear Adelaide had already started to think of next week, a derby against bitter rivals the Power.

Simon Goodwin was impressive as always across the half-back line and racked up 35 possessions. Scott Thompson was among the Crows best with 29 disposals and nine tackles, while Bernie Vince would have impressed his coaches. Ben Rutten and Nathan Bock ran off their opponents with ease, combining for 56 disposals. Jared Petrenko and Taylor Walker were in many starting 22’s they only had 50% TOG each. Kurt Tippett recorded his first two tons of the season with 19 disposals, 19 hit outs and two goals.

Brock McLean and Brent Moloney each had 29 possessions and could hold their head high. Cameron Bruce had 26 touches and Aaron Davey was probably the best for the Demons with accurate disposal.

Star Man: Simon Goodwin. Game-high 35 touches, again proved his status among fantasy elite.

Shocker: Brad Miller. Amazing last week, just six disposals and 0.2 this week.

One to watch: Jack Grimes. Is he in line for a call-up after a solid display in the reserves?

Were Richmond and Fremantle’s wins flukey?
Apart from Gary Ablett who else shined for you this week?
How were you affected by injury this week (Harvey, Hille, Richo, Dalziell, Hansen, Palmer)?
How many trades will you be using and how many do you have left?
Who is on your chopping block?
Welcome to a free-for-all in the comments below.

Monty:- Have just taken the big pineapple as a present.
Dalziel & Skippy in mids, Beams (emg)Harvey in Fwd, M Brown & T Walker (emg).

Double trade in mids for say HH & then maybe Bartel etc down the price range. Have GAJ NDS Kornes Rich. Bit more squirming.

Being my first post on this page it’s only fair to have the first use of the pineapple. Finished now.

andy Says: 12:34 am, April 28th, 2009

dont know what to do with harvey im thinking trade him for houlihan as i have him in the fwd line and trade hasleby for pendlebury as haslebys breakeven is now 100…can someone give me a better option i dont really want houlihan

Olly Says: 12:57 am, April 28th, 2009

have a look at higgins if you dont have him, or wiggins? Pav is down in price, so is franklin and a few others

I’m a bit stuck too. Have spangher and raines on the bench doing nothing, thinking of letting spangher go for Greenwood, then travis cloke for Pav? Or could trade off Wells (on bench) for barham, and upgrade malceski to Hodge or again, Cloke to Pav. Thoughts?

Chook Says: 1:01 am, April 28th, 2009

Mitch, Moss was a bit cheaper two weeks ago, though well done to you if you hopped on then.

I doubt very many people who bought Pubpork (Barham) last week will be selling him this week.

Otherwise, cheers for the time and effort you put into these each week.

JoeyJoeJoe Says: 1:31 am, April 28th, 2009

All I want to say is disappointed Andy Otten didn’t get a mention in the Crows game wrap. A timely 91 or so to help me cause a huge upset in my league. Not that it matters too much if you don’t have him don’t worry, the bull has gone through the gate! Apart from that average week indeed.

Iain Says: 5:21 am, April 28th, 2009

Have spent the past three weeks OS and these wrap-ups have been invaluable - thanks! Keep up the good work. Before leaving NYC I traded in Harvey for Skippy, and was confident Hille would finally produce. Needless to say, I was gutted after stepping off a 15 hour flight to open the Hun and read the injury news. I guess I should have heeded Monty’s “bearish” feeling on Harvey! Bugger.

Roy Says: 8:24 am, April 28th, 2009

It’l be interesting to see if the AFL let Gazza leave for his own league..

Im jumping on Garry Moss RIGHT NOW, cos hes the dalziell of 2009 and i dont want to sit and see him worth 400,000 in two weeks time regretting i didnt pick him up. He is secure now in a hawks side which is only just coming into form. How can you go past him, Skipworth OUT Moss IN. I have skippy as a mid.

Pierce (Environment) Brosnan Says: 8:31 am, April 28th, 2009

The last few weeks you’ve analysed Hawthorns performances Mitch you’ve described them as “wiry, shaky” and alike. You’re obviously a Geelong supporter judging by your comments of “If Gary Ablett doesn’t win the Brownlow” and “Can they build a league so he can go play on his own?”
If you’re still haunted by last September, or the previous 20 years of Hawthorns dominance over Geelong then you really must build a bridge. It’s starting to show in the quality of your work.

nathan Says: 8:47 am, April 28th, 2009

didak out, nathan brown out, richo injured, hille injured. terrible week. anyone know if sidebottom is going to get a game for pies? his stats look good in the vfl.

Fenez Says: 9:28 am, April 28th, 2009

Mitch i like it better with the scores next to players names, but perhaps just next to the starman and shocker? Thanks mate your doing a cracker job!

Fishy Says: 9:38 am, April 28th, 2009

Great work Mitch!

Ps. Who to choose? Barham or Hartlett?

Dutchie Says: 10:05 am, April 28th, 2009

Hartlett over Barhan every day of the week and twice on Sundays

torress Says: 11:22 am, April 28th, 2009

yea tough week

got hasleby and don’t want to trade him yet!! BE of a 100 in SC someone said up the page??? don’t have much cash on hand i was hoping to get a straight swap for a premium 4 him - but thinking atm moss could be a nice straight swap?? hmm decisions lol!!!
freo v dockers, can’t say i’ve seen too many freo games this year - hasleby spending time across half back right? was at aurora on sat and west coast (it was wet as tho) zone very deep & hodgey was all over it. maybe hasleby (if he gets up to play) might BE this week with the weagles deep zone playng into his game.

torress Says: 11:23 am, April 28th, 2009

lol sorry freo vs eagles

Marcus Says: 11:43 am, April 28th, 2009

@Pierce (Environment) Brosnan…
you can’t deny that hawthorn have been playing poorly this season so far compared to how everyone expects them to play, its not just mitch saying this but the whole of football media. the fact that a team is being slammed when they are at 2-3 shows that they are a very strong team. so stop having a go at people just because they dont think hawthorn are playing up to their usual standards.

matt Says: 11:46 am, April 28th, 2009

Tarrant had a good game. Just not the kind of game that gets many DT points.

Chris Says: 11:54 am, April 28th, 2009

Nice work Mitch, your best wrap so far I’d say

MitchIsAwful Says: 12:21 pm, April 28th, 2009

You are awful at summing the games up Mitch - get Monty back on these wraps.

Monty you need to find a new apprentice, this one is a dud.

Detau Says: 12:24 pm, April 28th, 2009

What are people’s thoughts on Rich? Is he a keeper? will he continue to rise?, thinking about trading him out for hartlett for some cash. Although i have Reilly (underperforming)& Tuck (dropped off since injury) & Anthony (on bench still injured) who i could trade for.

Thinking i will use that cash to upgrade petrenko to ryder or the likes of considering i have raines / hill & broughton…really need to pull more numbers back.

cheers.

Paddy Says: 12:42 pm, April 28th, 2009

Dalziel is my 8th injuy for the season! Still only made 4 trades though, but am carrying Hentchel, Skippy, Anthony, Wells and Raines on my bench.

Hayes will come in for Dalziell, but I am also thinking of bringing in Paddy Ryder for either Scott Stevens or Leigh Harding. If he plays in the ruck all year he should score some points, plus it will free up some cash.

Any thoughts?

Detau Says: 1:10 pm, April 28th, 2009

paddy leave scotty stevens…he will come good, price went down coz he was injured during the freo game with a low score. had a good pre season but has been interupped during regular season. eased back in against melbourne, give him a few more weeks.

Damo Says: 1:15 pm, April 28th, 2009

@Pierce (Environment) Brosnan

I agree with marcus, a blind man who knows nothing about footy could see that the cats are on fire, ablett is on fire, and the hawks are struggling (at the moment). So nothing wrong in Mitch saying so. Think you’re drawing a very long bow by attributing Micth’s comments to “previous 20 years of Hawthorns dominance over Geelong”. Get your hand off it.

@MitchIsAwful - The lad’s having a crack which is more than what you are doing. One would expect his writing to improve as he gets more experience and confidence. It would be interesting to pull out some of Monty’s original blogs - I can’t be bothered doing that but I would expect that he has improved. Anyway i would have thought that the purpose of this blog is NOT to spoonfeed you a set of instructions that you can easily follow, but rather the purpose is to summarise the weekend’s events (most of which will already be well known to most of us anyway, but for those who couldn’t get near a ground or a telly it would be handy) and to generate some discussion. Seems to be working.

Well done fanfooty - always the first fantasy footy site I visit on any given day and then onto the others if time permits.

Back to the footy - I wouldn’t be too bullish on grabbing Moss at his current price - lots of players to come back for the Hawks yet and something’s gotta give. (Wish I’d grabbed him at his starting price though).

Thinking Hille to Kozi in SC this week, assuming he is fit and despite the price drop he will take due to his high BE (got no reserves in the rucks and can’t afford the zero this week). Anybody know the status of the Kozi injury? If he’s buggered then I’m going Mcintosh.

ryz Says: 1:33 pm, April 28th, 2009

is this the week to pick up hodge?

petrenk –> hodge purgoyne and hopefully rainesy back means that i can boot steve hill to the bench?

if petrenk doesnt get named but, im happy to wait. but dont want him dropping in green is all and hodgey looks like hes gonna be warming up soonish?

….although i still dont have dean cox….should i get him?

same as last week Says: 1:38 pm, April 28th, 2009

Barham is just another Mitch Robinson, one good show and nothing after. Didn’t see him hit a target on the weekend.

Great to see Cogs back for the tiges, a week out seemed to be what McMahon needed and Nahas you zippy little chihuahua you. Shades definately not needed but the future is a little bit brighter.

Injuries and lack of form in the ruck has made things interesting. Spare parts ruckmen are the flavour at the moment while younger specialist rucks are ‘given time to develop’.

juice box Says: 1:38 pm, April 28th, 2009

Gary ablett is that good u mang. Has no bearing on the quality of the report imo. Think ur on ur own buddy

Roger Says: 2:15 pm, April 28th, 2009

Interesting that everyone is being quiet about the Hille trade options.

This injury is going to make for good dream team amongst leagues as the decision to trade up to a Cox or Fraser, accross to a Sandilands or McIntosh or down to the budding younger stars like Kruezer, Tippet and Ryder will create for some big differences between otherwise similar teams.

I have a few dollars in the bank and will be trading hille for McIntosh, although trading an injured player for an injury prone player is unsettling.

Roger Says: 2:18 pm, April 28th, 2009

Oops, looks like Ryder is not a ruck option in dream team this year. My mistake.

Pierce (Environment) Brosnan Says: 2:31 pm, April 28th, 2009

@Marcus…

No denying Hawthorn are playing poorly at the moment, but for Mitch to be harping on about their shakiness week in week out, in April mind you, without once mentioning how decimated the back line and midfield has been is naive. Take three tall defenders and three mid range onballers out of Geelong and they’d be putting up similar performances. Doubt he’d be mentioning how shaky their performances would be if that were the case though.

@Damo…

By a blind knowing nothing about football you’d be referring to yourself, right? Nothing wrong with having your hand on it either. I’d imagine your problem would be finding it in the first place.

@MitchIsAwful…

Couldn’t agree more.

u mad? Says: 2:35 pm, April 28th, 2009

what’s peoples opinion on hodge? get him in this week or the next? all i know atm is malsexi the spud isnt staying.

btw great write up mitch.

2049 this week in dt so didnt do too badly
15 trades left not gonna use any for a couple of weeks now gonna try and cruise

Brad Says: 2:50 pm, April 28th, 2009

Hi guys,

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Otten out Hatlett in
Harvey out Reiwoldt in

Skipworth out Nahas/Warren in
Harvey out Reiwoldt in

Both these options leave me with cash for future upgrades.

Other option is Harvey out Franklin/Brown in and no spare cash but only use 1 trade to deal with Boomers injury.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Evolved Says: 3:14 pm, April 28th, 2009

Brad- Why would you trade Otten? has many more weeks to mature…. Will be a nice upgrade in 3-4 weeks and won’t cost too much to upgrade to a lower priced premium….

hairy Says: 3:33 pm, April 28th, 2009

@peirce
you sound like a sore loser. your team fluked a win last year. get over it the whole world knows their tactics now.

Brad Says: 3:38 pm, April 28th, 2009

@ Evolved,

Thanks for the advice.
I assume you would go for this option instead?

“Other option is Harvey out Franklin/Brown in and no spare cash but only use 1 trade to deal with Boomers injury”

MortGoldmon Says: 3:54 pm, April 28th, 2009

Mitch, I think you’re write up this week is a marked improvement on last week, keep up the good work.
I have a question for you Mitch; what are the best rotations in regards to growing spuds?
Sorry it’s a bit off topic but i heard you were studying horticulture.

What are peoples thoughts on a S.Hill -> Ryder trade? do you guys think he will continue like he did on the wknd?

montyfan Says: 4:03 pm, April 28th, 2009

give mitch the spud

Lee Says: 4:05 pm, April 28th, 2009

@MitchIsAwful

You are a tosser, aren’t you? You have access to this site for free and the wealth of data that it provides and yet you believe that it is OK to criticise those who give up their time to contribute to it. Pull your head in, you muppet.

Kossie28 Says: 4:17 pm, April 28th, 2009

mitch … I suggest you look a little mroe closely at the game, rather than the fantasy scores … A Joseph played on Griffin and kept him quiet all day … that’s why he is the side … not sure what game you were watching thinking he was on Higgins … you owe the kid an apology!!!

Marc Says: 4:25 pm, April 28th, 2009

If you can’t criticise something then there is something wrong with the world. Ok fair enough he’s being a dick about it, but you can’t make a statement saying you can’t criticise it at all, thats just stupid.

norton13 Says: 4:28 pm, April 28th, 2009

Great work Mitch/Monty. Big fan of the site. I have Skippy & Robinson on the pine in the Mids. Any thoughts on Trading them both out for Hartlett/Collins and Simon Black?

azzacooney Says: 4:40 pm, April 28th, 2009

A FEW MAJOR ISSUES FOR ME THIS WEEK WHICH REQUIRE RESPONSE FROM MONTY RATHER THAN HIM BEING A COWARD AS PER USUAL.

1. FOR THE SECOND WEEK RUNNING THIS SITES LIVE STATS HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY RUNNING LIKE CRAP - CRASHING CONSISTENTLY - THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE…. MONTY PLEASE ADVISE IF THIS IS TO CONTINUE - IF SO I WILL NOT BOTHER WITH YOUR SITE GOING FORWARD….WE DESERVE A F**KING EXPLANATION GIVEN OUR LOYALTY TO YOUR SITE.

2. Before anyone has a crack and tells me to go f**k myself … monty has chosen to run this site, if his servers are not handling the flow of people they should be upgraded.
MONTY - if you are going to run this site run it properly - really ..why bother with the way it is currently going.

MONTY - The people deserve ANSWERS - stop being a f***king COWARD and let the people know what the hell is going on.

To be honest - I prefer to use AFL.COM.AU for stats if every minute your site shows undefined undefined… before crashing consistently throughout each and every game.

I mean really - smarten up you act pal or dont bother. ADVISE everyone your server are not up to it and we will just stop logging in.

LASTLY - I assume the reason the site was down against the Collingwood Vs Brisbane Game wasto UPGRADE SERVERS - It seems this was a complete waste of time…. not to mention a pain in the ar*se.

PLEASE ADVISE MONTY - AND AGAIN.. STOP BEING A COWARD AND HIDING BEHIND YOUR COMPUTER

@Brad

If you are talking SC, yah Buddy could be the way to go. he is sitting equal top of the goalkicking list and he still looks out of sorts. Once he comes good he will be massive. i had him from the start this year and i have fiath he will come good.

Otten has a B/E of -10 and another 3 weeks of an 80 average will see him around the 400K mark and another 100K from where he is now

Buddy has not had a shocker yet this year either (lowest score 72) last year i didn’t have him, but i do remember him pulling 170’s one week and 45 the next. He’s 460K now, he might drop a little more this week, but you always run the risk of him pulling a blinder out, he is due. Get him in and save a trade by keeping Otten

GIbbo Says: 6:51 pm, April 28th, 2009

guys i want to get greenwood but i dont no who to get rid of out of either petrenko or cheney??

also is liam anthony that good or should i just go for hartlett in for robinson now??

@detau
dont get rid of rich, he is going to make you some much money then trade him later for a big name.

some douchebag.. Says: 6:52 pm, April 28th, 2009

i’m thinking j.lewis could be a handy pick up this week in DT .. around the same price as mitchell and hodge at the moment but i cant imagine his b/e to be as big as theirs so he’s bound to go up.. thinking of bringing him in for dalziell just to free up some cash?? any thoughts?

Evolved Says: 6:58 pm, April 28th, 2009

@ Gibbo- don’t trade either this week. Petrenko should play. Craig mentioned about giving the kids a go in the Showdown would be a good experience for them. Wait a week and then you will have an idea of who is more likely to play and see if Greenwood will be picked for a 3rd game

Give the Spud to Hairyscary- if you don’t like it, please do fuck off to the AFL site so we don’t have to hear you whinge anymore

Evolved Says: 6:59 pm, April 28th, 2009

Why didn’t the swear filter work just then?

Peter G Says: 7:00 pm, April 28th, 2009

While I don’t share hairyscary’s vehemence, I was a bit disappointed myself that Monty didn’t notify his viewers of the downtime situtation, particularly afterwards.

It was only after trawling through the forums I saw some obscure reference to upgrades. I understand that this is a useful site, but it is a business (not a hobby as some tools continually maintain), and if we’re going to have perpetual outages, we’d like a little respect also. If my favourite coffee shop was closed for repairs, I’d expect notice apologising for same.

AFL.com is slow, but ultimately reliable over the weekend. Smarten up, Monty, or your viewers may vote with their mice away from this blog… (or translate the metaphor however you’d like)

GIbbo Says: 7:03 pm, April 28th, 2009

he is avg 112, and is only out for 2 weeks. an absoloute premium, why waste a trade.

btw, you dont win your league till round 22, and i for one am saving my trades & letting my cash cows rise in price for a while

Korza Says: 8:02 pm, April 28th, 2009

@ Gomaz

P.Burgoyne has been sitting on the pine for two weeks costing most about 120pts min, for me that is about 800 places on the rung.I would prefer to be ranked 32 instead of 832.If anyone would disagree, you might as well turn off your computer.

PS: I am not going for a league win..
It is the car or nothing, and i am well aware the odds are astronomical.

phil Says: 8:18 pm, April 28th, 2009

Can everyone thats critising Monty about his site just stop using it or stop complaining about it… Im coming 498th in supercoach and would never be doing this well if i didnt use the info on this site (since december) I didnt start with a single Hawthorn player (after Monty had them down as a 2-4 par start after 6 rnds) and after adding Hodgey at a reduced price last week will do the same with Buddy shortly. The reason the site is struggling during game times is obviously due to such popular interest but if your not satisfied, by all means go to afl.com.au, but good luck on getting any useful advice there

jimmyk Says: 8:30 pm, April 28th, 2009

does anyone have an opinion on trading haselby to moss this week or is it too early to be dropping the purple haze…

reasoning is Moss (227,000) BE is -97, Haselby (418,000) breakeven is 116….

would leave me wit 15 trades but…..

would u do it

Better yet petition Telstra to build a similar site. That way they can make a killing charging fans like you $10 a month to access.

Idiots.

Pete Says: 9:06 pm, April 28th, 2009

hey guys,

My SC backline is taking a hit every week due to my favourtism to the other positions (i.e got judd ablett and bartel) and wondering whether it is worth a straight trade from dempsey to gram this week or hanging around longer incase a better opportunity arises e.g an enright, hodge or s.fisher.

personally i think gram is a decent SC player but is of the most overated i.e no where near the premium likes of goddard as he is so oftenly associated with. Just not sure a decsison to commit to him for the rest of the season (i wouldn’t trade him if i did get him now) is a good one.

if anyone can be bothered responding that would be great :)

P.S my backline currently consists of goddard, c.cornes, houlihan, j.macdonald, dempsey, s.hill, greenwood :with raines and broughton on the pine (both would play when fit over greeny and hill)

Murray Says: 9:16 pm, April 28th, 2009

To everyone who is having a crack at Mitch, STOP. Last week you asked for a little more opinion and he delivered. Also, this post looks like it is supposed to be a wrap, where he sums up the previous round.

@ Pierce, Mitch gave his opinion just like he should be able to do. Geelong have Ling, Harley, Ottens and Hunt out and can still win matches. Gary Ablett is a gun and no one in the league comes close.

@ Mitch is awful, Mitch is doing a great job and giving up his own time for everyone who uses this site and just as Lee said you should go whinge some where else.

Also who should I trade for Hille?

Damo Says: 9:23 pm, April 28th, 2009

Mighty Says: 10:12 pm, April 28th, 2009

@Brad
Do you still have S Burgoyne? You might want to trade him and then look at the Harvey trade.
If you want to trade out Skippy this week then warren might be your man.
If you just want to do the one trade then Harvey - Franklin is a pretty good trade. Franklin has been pretty serviceable while Hawthorn haven’t been at their best. As they improve he should too.

Joel Says: 10:59 pm, April 28th, 2009

agree with Matt on Tarrant, do you say Presti has a bad game if he only get 15 dt points?
He played a defensive man on man roll, bit naive to say he had a shocker

SC Trades…

Hille to McIntosh
Harvey to <550k forward (who is best option?)
cash made on forward

or

Hille to Kruezer
Harvey to Riewoldt
40k

(cox is my first ruck, have no forward emerg. atm, walker replacing skippy, who will be traded next week)

Thoughts???

So much crap advice on here. Wish you nuff nuffs were in my league…

Dare you all to use all your trades by round 10. That is the way winners win. Get the best players in ASAP cause then you’ll reap the rewards for longer. Seriously!

-Rich. Gone!
-Hartlett. Craptastic. As if he’ll keep his spot from the Burgoyne’s.
-Barham. Jump on board, this guy is going to be 500k in 4 weeks time. I bet my 11th finger on it.
-Ben Warren… do you dare bite the Dean Laidley carrot?
-Collins… @ the tigers… surely that bodes well for high DT scores… wait, they have the lowest no. LTIs, and are playing crap. Hm….. if it wasn’t for Richo going down do you think they could kick a goal?
-Pavlich: drop him now, what a spud
-Hodge: drop him
-Hille: hang onto this bargain. He’ll come back rnd 7 just you wait!
-Gary Ablett: if you have him you’re a nuff nuff. Dammit i have him :’(

micklovin Says: 1:33 am, April 29th, 2009

I don’t see what the big problem is this week… I got 2156 DT and finally moved inside the top 1000. Amazing what actually using your trades will do…

Last 2 weeks i’ve gone robindon to beams and paul johnson to h-mac

and garlett to nahas and skippy to riewoldt.

My only problem is starting both petterd and rance on my field 5 rounds into the year…

Was thinking about dropping down to 13 trades this week and going suban to greenwood and haselby to bartel or another top liner… Suggestions???

Jdog Says: 1:47 am, April 29th, 2009

any thoughts on peterenko and rich. have they topped out yet, if not how long do they have left?

Jdog Says: 2:06 am, April 29th, 2009

disreguard that last comment about rich and peterenko, just had a look a their BE’s. both have at least 2 more weeks left in them based on their averages.

Pierce (Environment) Brosnan Says: 8:17 am, April 29th, 2009

Does anyone know how Steele Sidebottom went in the VFL last week and the possibility of a call up in the near future? Is Mick likely to weild the axe this week with the likes of Toovey or Barham and give this kid a go?

Have him on the pine with Skippy and the injury to Booma has left the forward line fragile.

Hey just need a bit of advice …
i’ve got $720,000 in the bank with 15trades left so i can do whatever i like.
I don’t have any of the injured players and my emergency’s play.

But im contemplating biting the bullet and upgrading Fevola to Riewoldt just cause Fev’s BE is huge and too inconsistent.
ive got Chapman, Higgins, Krakour (upgrade him later if form drops), Pav, Deledio & Nahas (will upgrade when he maxes out)

Also thinking bout upgrading Hasleby in the middle to anyone .. thinking Pendlebury? or mayb wait a week for Judd?
Got Ablett, Richo, Selwood, Rich & Otten on field as well atm.. beams to come for richo if need be..
Can upgrade otten when he maxes out in a few weeks.

What you guys think?
Sorry for the essay! lol

I reckon you can work it out yourself you lucky bastard! :)

Analyst Says: 1:21 pm, April 29th, 2009

Mitch, kudos for the article, better than last week. It was good to see you going beyond simply reciting the players’ stats and actually providing reasons why they scored as they did, particularly helpful for those who may not have watched the game.

Things like: “Patrick Ryder won the ANZAC Medal and deservedly so, he had to shoulder the ruck duties single-handedly after Hille was struck down in the second minute” are informative comments and are much appreciated.

As previous comments have mentioned, you should be careful labelling a player’s performance as “shocking” simply because they had limited stats. Tarrant and Joseph are two examples of players who did their job well this week, even though they didn’t get many possessions.

Roy Says: 1:32 pm, April 29th, 2009

natanui and sidebottom will get games this week. making it very interesting on whther ppl will upgrade to premiums with their cash cows or downgrade to these young guns for cash

Chris Says: 2:05 pm, April 29th, 2009

Naitanui will be unlikely to get a game, I think you’ll find he’ll play for Swan Districts in the WAFL again this week.

Worsfold expects him to be a key player for years to come and has continually stipulated he’s in no hurry to rush him into afl - especially derby week when there’s already so much more media hype.

Tim Says: 2:12 pm, April 29th, 2009

@ Roy. Interesting call on NicNat. Last Friday he pulled up with hamstring soreness. He was going to play in the WAFL reserves last weekend, but the Eagles subsequently said they would “hold him back.”

So do you have new information or are you making it up and trying to mislead others?

MONTY - please just respond with an explanation instead of being the stupid nerd coward you are.

Secondly… everyone that writes on this forum actually has no idea about football. players like paul johnson, palmer and garlett…just to name a few - WHY BOTHER - If you have picked any of these players and many more you have no idea - GIVE UP.

Anyone who thinks being rude to monty about the continual crashing of the site is not on…guess again…. NOT ONCE have i ever taken one of his opinions and applied them to my dream team - so if you have your side is crap - he really does not know much about DT or football in general.

SO… i really do not have to bow to his site simply becuase he provides ill informed opinions about footballers who on almost every occasion turn out to be rubbish.

MONTY WAKE UP AND EXPLAIN YOURSELF

Also, I think H Hartlett is a big unit. And by big, I mean I want him inside me - isn’t he handsome? But I can’t trade him in if I fix Trenko and Boomer.

Please help. I can be friendly if you help me out. And by friendly, I mean a wildcat in bed AND I’ll cook you brekkie.

Please help.

Why dont you excercise your rights as a consumer and click off FF once and for all?

Do you get a sexual release on writing your weekly whinge every Wednesday??

Monty, is it possible to have the quarter by quarter SC scores up next to the dream team scores during the game or aren’t you allowed to show them until the very end? This would save us having to flick between different sites and stop the question “How do you know the SC scores” coming up a thousand times every single game!

Milly Says: 4:15 pm, April 29th, 2009

How is it important to have live stat’s just because you have a competitive team. Its not like you can change your side half way through a round. You will learn alot more about your players by watching the game it self than seeing some numbers tick over. The stats will still be the same after the game.

natanui probably wont play this week. he will play for swans in the WAFL.
for those who havent seen him play before i would strongly suggest aginst buying him. here are a few reasons why.
1. he is coming off an injury and might take a while to get back into it. if he has a shocker in his first game, might get dropped.
2. his price is a bit high at around 150k, if he was under 100k then maybe.
3. he simple isnt that good yet. yes he is a freak athlete, but does not have a football brain. watching him the WAFL, he is constantly giving away free kicks and doesnt read the play very well.
he will be a very good player one day, but we will be waiting a while.

Brad Says: 11:22 pm, April 29th, 2009

Need some advice chaps. I have
Backs (need 2 to play) - Hill, Cheney, Petrenko, Broughton
Mids (Need 1) - Beams, Rich, Robinson
Fwds (Need 3) - Ziebell, Harvey, M. Brown, Skipworth, Garlett.

Am thinking two trades, Robinson for Barham as 1. Was thinking Skipworth for someone and holding on Harvey to see what happens with the price of some premuims, Franklin etc.

Thoughts on this. Who is a good choice for skippy that would make me some money??

Cheers

@ brad
are teams sound very similar.
im probs gonna do the same thing with harvey. there are a lot of good forwards with relativly high BE’s this week. buddy, stevie J, richo.
i have hille though, so i will trade him out for kruzer and get some extra cash. if these forwards get their BE’s and go up in value i will still be able to afford them.

would go with hill (seems to be hitting some form). steer clear of peterenko though, has struggled the last 2 weeks.
rich is solid, he was down on his average this week, but he played geelong.

who sould i trade skipworth for? thinking a downgrade.

A little boy from Melbourne had gone to Rome on holiday with his family hoping to see the Pope. Anyway, a couple of days after they’d arrived, the Pope was doing a tour of the city in his Popemobile. The little lad was a bit worried that the Pope wouldn’t be able to pick him out in the crowd, so his Mum said “Don’t worry, the Pope is a footy dan, so wear your Carlton jumper and he’s bound to pick you out and talk to you.”

So, they’re in the crowd, but the Pope-mobile drives past them, and stops a bit further down the street where John Paul gets out and speaks to a little boy in a Collingwood jumper. The lad is distraught and starts crying. His Mum says “Don’t worry, the Pope’s driving around tomorrow as well, so we’ll get you a Collingwood jumper and then he’s bound to see you.”

The next day arrives, and the boy’s got on his new Collingwood jumper. The Popemobile stops right by him, John Paul gets out, bends down and says to the lad “I thought I told you to f*** off yesterday!”

Did you know that the toothbrush was invented in Collingwood.

If it had have been invented anywhere else, it would have been called a teethbrush.

Get a life - you dont need live scores. Go to the pub and enjoy footy for what it is - you are a bunch of whinging flowerheads.

Hairyscary - go F yourself…hahahaha

@brad

robinson to barham is a bad trade, especially considering the strength of your midfield rookies. barham had 7 clangers from 14 possies last week and will be lucky to get more games. robinson had 30 possies in the vfl and will get more games very soon, maybe this week. hang on to robbo, he’s still got good growth potential.

yarran will come in before robbo, hes in ripper form 9 goals the past 2 weeks in the VFL!

@ Hairy not so scary
You must lead a really interesting life logging on to a website you dislike and having a crack at the people that run it. I bet if fanfooty was to stop operating you would be the first one running to your mummy for a cry!

I’m holding onto Robinson.
He’s a proven high DT scorer at underage, and just because he had one or two bad scores and gets dropped doesn’t mean ill drop him, he will come back, one or two injuries and he will be back in.

Brad Says: 1:46 pm, April 30th, 2009

Ok thinking 1 trade. Skipworth out for someone. Got 130k as well. Should i go a premium such as buddy or someone likely to make me money. If so who. Cheers lads.

Gonna let Skippy sit on the bench for now with M.Brown/Taylor starting, he’s listed as 2-3 weeks off returning and his average is still a fair bit ahead of his BE so can still get a bit more $$. SC(avg/BE) 86/44.64, DT(avg/BE) 82/65.1

Ben Says: 2:06 pm, April 30th, 2009

Brad - if you can get a premium player, you get them, don’t fuck around.

Riewoldt if you can afford him, then Pavlich, then Buddy.
