Backopalypse Redux: Another year of fantasy back problems

by m0nty | April 8th, 2009 | Comments : [195] | Categories: Injuries, Selection, Trade advice.
Paul Montgomery

Col. Kurtz is nothing compared to the nightmare in fantasy defences… again. The horror, the horror!

To all of those who thought devotees of all-premium back lines were playing last year’s game: Ha ha! Now look at the mess we’re all in. Those of you who toyed with stacking your backline but hung with the strategy hardcore, and did not succumb to temptation and put Andrew Raines in as #7 back like I did, are now laughing all the way to the bank. That is, they are laughing if they also avoided the nasty pitfalls like Nathan Bock’s club suspension for allegedly slapping his girlfriend at a nightclub, or Jordan McMahon’s Bowden-like dropping, or Heath Shaw’s suprise round 1 omission, or Adam McPhee’s suspension this week.

Backopalypse ReduxAs often happens, the feeling among fantasy coaches as to which position contains the strongest rookie class waxes and wanes each week of the preseason, and by the time lockout came around I was detecting a distinct love towards the forwards, a cooling off of love towards the midfielders, and a slightly sunnier disposition to the defenders. As it has turned out, there are four excellent starting midfielders that you would love to have in your squad, starting at least two of them each week so far: Daniel Rich, Mitch Robinson, Andy Otten and now Dayne Beams. In the forwards, Jack Ziebell has been so-so while Mitchell Brown and Taylor Walker haven’t risen above bench fodder, as most of us suspected. In the back line, however, the stocks are surely depleted more than we would have suspected. Michael Hurley got injured, Lachie Henderson and Nathan Grima have been unsighted, Matthew Spangher got dropped, Stephen Hill and Nic Suban have been less than startable, and Greg Broughton has been mouldering in the WAFL (albeit the press is reporting both Broughton and Matt DeBoer as coming in this week). The only truly bright spots in fantasy defences have been Kyle Cheney and Jared Petrenko, both of whom are facing issues with selection in the coming weeks. Cheney has to stave off the return of Matthew Whelan, who was off the Demons injury report this week with his calf problem and will apparently line up in the magoos this weekend, leaving one more week of Cheney action before he has to dodge a selection bullet. In the little bloodnut’s favour is a complication to Paul Wheatley’s condition, which has graduated from a calf to a quadricep injury that will linger on for at least another six weeks. Petrenko has to contend with the imminent return of Brad Symes, although the injury to Chris Knights may ease the squeeze there a little. Then there’s Alex Rance, who at least nominally is holding Will Thursfield out but could also be replaced by McMahon depending on matchups, especially this week considering the lack of height in the Bulldogs forward line.

What does all this mean? It means that those of you who haven’t got the dosh to upgrade Raines to a Sam Gilbert, Paul Duffield or (cough) Leigh Harding are going to have to burn two trades to change your structure a little. My philosophy on changing your structure is that if the two trades you make in a week to do it solve four problems at once, then it’s okay. I have seen some talking about sacrificing a mid-pricer or keeper who is just performing so-so, like a Jed Adcock. Personally, I have Brent Reilly in my Dream Team, so let’s use him as an example. I haven’t liked the look of his first two games, to be honest. I was expecting him to have a deeper fitness base than what he looks to have developed. He has gone missing for what seems to me like entire quarters - like two DT points in Q4 last week and another two points in Q3 of round 1. The temptation for me is to downgrade Reilly to Andy Otten, and use the cash to upgrade one of my backs to a keeper. I have enough money in DT, after trading Raines to Cheney last week, to now sell Broughton and get Xavier Ellis. Alternately, I could reach all the way to Brendan Goddard or Sam Fisher if I bypass Otten for David Zaharakis or Beams, and leave Broughton and sell Hill. Any of these double-trade options would be solving four problems: Reilly sucking, Otten/Beams not being in my side when he’s an obvious cash cow, Hill/Broughton not being good enough, and my #7 back being a terrible hole in my structure.

The other reason I think that changing your structure in week 2 is not a stupid move is that if you look into the future, it’s going to be a lot better to concentrate your cash cow culling in the centres because there are a bunch of good kids who look at this point to be debuting later in the year. Liam Anthony himself is likely to make his delayed debut somewhere in the month before the split round. Luke Shuey and Tom Swift will probably get their chance somewhere around there too. Sam Blease is still a fair way away, and the Steele Sidebottom buzz has died down for the moment. The talent pool of late debuts in the backs is nowhere near as promising, leading me to think that it may be prudent to plan to keep your back rookies in your squad for the duration, Nathan J. Brown style.

On the flip side, there are some players who I wouldn’t want to waste in a double trade like this. I learned the lesson last year with Xavier Ellis and Bryce Gibbs that it is often the right move to stick fat with high-upside players who have middling starts, because those with natural ability (notably both top 3 draft picks, those two) often have excellent second halves, as both those two boys did last year. Travis Boak and Matthew Leuenberger may be two such players from the class of 2006 that it would be dangerous to pull the trigger on, with Chris Masten and Patrick Dangerfield similarly placed from the 2007 draft.

How about you lot, are you lighting a bomb under your structure and blowing it to the shizenhousen, or are you defending the ramparts against the orcish hordes? What are you going to do, or have already done, about Raines? How many trades are you using in the first two weeks, and are you sorry if you held back last week, with more bad news coming down the track this week as predicted? Perhaps most crucially, are you hanging onto the likes of Raines (2 weeks), Brad Ottens (4-6) or Bock (1 to who knows) and leaving yourself open to the 2009 equivalent of the Joel Bowden disaster? Tell me in the comments.

Never been a big fan of premium backmen. Most of my backmen are mid-priced and rookies.

I saved $$$ from my backline and invested it into the midfeild ( All pre-lock out)

Going to keep raines, two weeks is not long.

Superfist Says: 5:57 pm, April 8th, 2009

I would have considered trading Hill if there was anyone decent to trade down to. In response to your “ha ha”, was that ironic? As it seems that the premium back strategy has more or the same amount of problems as a team with a few premiums a few mids and 2 - 3 rookies - there’s injuries or poor performers on every level. Sure you could have chosen the right premiums for your premium strategy, but for every P.Burgoyne (and admit it Monty you browned your undies when you saw him being helped off on Sunday) there’s a Bock or a Mackie.

korza Says: 6:00 pm, April 8th, 2009

Monty wtf

This is all like rocket science to me,it’s gonna take several reads before i can absorb all this info.

I am rating myself as an official nuff nuff,i upgraded Raines to Bock last week. Now i,m trading out for Harding.Watch him get floored at the 1st bounce.

Royboy Says: 6:01 pm, April 8th, 2009

I burnt Bock - not going to risk a player with off field dramas. Downgraded (if you can call it that) to Leigh Harding. Used the $40k to get rid of Dalziell for M.Murphy.

We’ll see how my SC team goes this week….

prentice Says: 6:02 pm, April 8th, 2009

Trading Hill to Cheney and Anthony to Rich. Praying that Cheney gets game time until Hurley recovers.

Scrow Tum Says: 6:06 pm, April 8th, 2009

im with Daniel monty wait for cash cows then upgrade your defense if you have rookies that are able to play likes of petrenko cheney and suckling are good replacements for raines until he comes back why waste trades this early 4 no reason

Nickelass Says: 6:07 pm, April 8th, 2009

What about rookie priced Suckling mOnty? Any chance of a return after his corkie?

rowshow Says: 6:07 pm, April 8th, 2009

who are the lock backmen this year? i have

Malceski
Bowden
Petrenko
Chornes
S.Fisher
Houlihan

Hill bench
Cheney bench

Is there a glaringly obvious lock backman this year?

Billy Says: 6:09 pm, April 8th, 2009

What about Dalziell? I bought him for a slight left fielder, but now I think im getting cold feet.

I know I shouldnt be trading but there are some firing Mids out there just waiting to be picked up!

Grahame Says: 6:09 pm, April 8th, 2009

Monty

Using two trades to upgrade backs. Raines and either Hill or Spangher gone for McMahon and Rance. Question: Keep Hill os Spangher??

Scrow Tum Says: 6:10 pm, April 8th, 2009

Could almost guarantee a start for suckling if he is fully fit clarkson loves him nikelass

Goldmoss Says: 6:13 pm, April 8th, 2009

I have Raines, Hill, Petrenko, Broughton.

This week I will make my first trade - Butler down to either Otten or Robinson.

This will free up enough cash to lift Hill to Duffield - but - will Duffield play 22, will he average the 85 he currently averages, will he become a premium…..these are the questions.

Think I will take the risk that 2 of Petrenko, Hill and Broughton plays rather than bringing the Duffman in as a keeper at this early stage.

The problem we are having, and always have, is that there are very few good back rookies, therefore very few trade down options throughout the year.

Im hanging on to the ones I have and praying.

Scott Says: 6:23 pm, April 8th, 2009

Is it stupid to trade Pav for Steve Johnson before the prices change?

Completely off topic I know…

korza Says: 6:27 pm, April 8th, 2009

@ Goldmoss

By the time you get your act into gear the horse would of bolted.

Coaches this year are over rating thier trades,(for the purposes of culling). In my honest opinion this year differs to previous as thier is not an even balance of rookies.

I say trade yourself out of trouble and cull your mids.

Tim Says: 6:30 pm, April 8th, 2009

I with mOnty here, solving a few problems at once.

Out Knights, In Otten. Out Hill, In Hurn. Leaves Anthony and Beams / Raines and Broughton on bench and fewer 22-selection bullets to dodge than other options. Also leaves $200/- to upgrade two cows in 3-5 weeks.

Also have Bock, but no need to trade him. If it’s two weeks, you don’t want to let him go. If it turns out to be longer, you can trade him to Hodge or Goddard in 2-3 weeks and probably make money as their prices are coming down.

themac Says: 6:39 pm, April 8th, 2009

Daniel Wells. Should he be traded? He is one of those that might just get 130 this week after doing poorly in the first two. A number of cash cows could come in. As mentioned above.

Thoughts?

CFC 1979 Says: 6:42 pm, April 8th, 2009

Goldmoss - I agree hold onto the ones you have.

Peter G Says: 6:45 pm, April 8th, 2009

Monty, mate, are you doing breakevens this year?!?

I’m surprised you haven’t addressed the question as tonnes of coaches are asking. If you’re not, I would seriously reconsider - the player research function is diminshed by a large margin without BEs.

The3rd Says: 6:46 pm, April 8th, 2009

Theres probably a lot of SC people in the same position as me, so i’ll throw it out there.

Problem Players:
Hill. Raines. Hentschel. L Anthony. Dalziel.

My Thoughts:

Im most likely going to leave trading Hill until next week and see how Rance goes.
Hill could go up in price, and Rance might be a good pickup judging on his 2nd game.

I also have Raines and Hentschel.
In my opinion, im trying to avoid trading Raines as I have others to cover (Cheney, Suban Hill). So i’ll keep Raines.
However, is Hentschel worth keeping on the bench as well? Im so tempted to trade him, but theres nobody good to go to. Already got Krakour, Skipworth, Higgins, M.Brown & Walker.

Also Dalziel is driving me nuts. Thinkin of spending the extra 5k and getting Gibbs instead.
Is anyone keeping Dalziel..?

Not to mention Liam Anthony’s on my bench. Prob should be cashing in on Robinson before its too late..

So many thoughts…
Just had to vent

addicted2tradebutton Says: 6:50 pm, April 8th, 2009

I’m liking the Hill to Hurn trade and leaving Raines on the bench; rather than booting Raines for a geary/harding type.

Steve Barra Says: 6:58 pm, April 8th, 2009

I reckon Harding’s the way to go. Cheney and Hill simply cannot cut the mustard long term.

Bob Says: 6:59 pm, April 8th, 2009

Having problems with dalziel too, think i might hold onto him, ottens, anthony, raines and hill. Might regret it but one less trade now is one more when it really matters!

hadley Says: 7:01 pm, April 8th, 2009

Dalziell to Hadley
Bock to Gilbee

30k left over

Raines on Bench

Im pretty happy with that, your thoughts?

Josha Says: 7:02 pm, April 8th, 2009

I have unfortunately used 4 trades already, but I think they’ve all been worthwhile…

Rd 1
Kerr for Rich
Raines for Bock (bad luck with Bock, but should only be 2 weeks and couldn’t miss out on Rich)

Rd 2
Hill for Cheney (want the cash cow, Hill is no good)
Surjan for Harding (Surjan is costing me points every week, and Harding on fire in midfield)…

Ingoes Says: 7:05 pm, April 8th, 2009

I have a megastar backline, they’re underperforming (well, Hodge, Goddard and Bowden are anyway. Lockyer and Cornes are going alright). I decided to hang on to Raines and put Petrenko on the bench.

At the other end of the page, Harvey is giving me the showers but I have listened to reason and I’m keeping him. Instead, I’m downgrading Hentschel to a forward rookie (maybe Walker) and using the cash plus what I have in the bank to turn Grima into Harding.

This will give me a backline of Lockyer, Cornes, Houlihan, Goddard, Hodge, Bowden, Harding, with Raines and Petrenko on the bench. As long as Petrenko keeps a spot until Raines gets back, I don’t really think it gets much better than that.

I will have used 4 trades but my backline will be finished barring major debacle. I have plenty of cash cows/cover in the mids and forward line so I should then be sitting back till round 7 or 8 before I use another trade

Pete Says: 7:10 pm, April 8th, 2009

@ Hadley

The Dalziell to Hadley trade breaks almost every rule.

Sideways. Sacking a guy after ONE bad game. Getting an injury-prone player who’s scored above himself while 2-3 key ball-getters are out of his side.

mitch Says: 7:11 pm, April 8th, 2009

wen the FUkK will lachlan henderson play?
somebody FUKEN answer me for once

Josha Says: 7:12 pm, April 8th, 2009

IMO, don’t trade Bock, Hodge, Harvey or Dalziell.

They are your premium guns who you should keep til they get better.

My next trade will be Anthony for Beams next week, presuming Beams has another high scoring effort this round….

Pete Says: 7:12 pm, April 8th, 2009

@ mitch.

Your best bet is to probably ring Voss directly. I’d use that tone as well.

Brad Says: 7:18 pm, April 8th, 2009

Is Wells out Gibbs in a stupid move?
Is there anyone that can convince that Wells needs more time?
Appreciate you thoughts.

Chad Says: 7:21 pm, April 8th, 2009

I think Broughton coming in would be saving quite a few people (myself included). I had 6 premiums and houlihan, and last minute thought to go to raines to save the 60k, gees would be nice to have kept houlihan :) But that is DT, you win some, you lose some.

Hindsight is wonderful, but as mentioned in dream team ruined my life, you know it is a low in your DT when you have to trade because your player slapped his misses on the piss.

Still tipping richmond for top 4 monty?

D. Laidley Says: 7:23 pm, April 8th, 2009

Guys, i promise i will start playing my rookies soon. All the talk about me being a dream teamers most hated coach saddens me.

hibbo Says: 7:25 pm, April 8th, 2009

Why are you all jumping off Dalziell after one game?? He smashed the pre-season and rd 1. Now after 1 bad game u all jump off him…have some faith, the guy is a ball magnet! DON’T TRADE PLAYERS OUT AFTER 1 BAD GAME!

Hadley- bad trades IMO, keep Dalziell- read above if u don’t know why.

Josha- All seem like worthwhile trades, just bad luck with Bock and not quite sure why u had Surjan in the first place? But i would lay off the trades for now (You probably already know that)…

Peter G Says: 7:42 pm, April 8th, 2009

Nice one, Pete.

Scott Says: 7:43 pm, April 8th, 2009

Does the ‘Don’t trade out your guns’ apply to Pav as well? His role has changed quite significantly. I don’t know if he’ll get back to the olden days…

jeremy Says: 7:45 pm, April 8th, 2009

If thinking of off loading Lucas for Ziebell, cause Lucas looks like sh!t, and also trading Raines for Cheney. What does everyone think?

dub's$men Says: 7:46 pm, April 8th, 2009

I love how people are trading out consistent performers after one bad round.. at the end of the season you’ll wish you hadn’t..

I traded Hill to Cheney in Rd1 and got rid of Anthony for Robinson.. might upgrade Raines to Houlihan in the backline but no getting rid of my underperforming backline guns (hodge, goddard)..

I also feel that Harding could be the McManus of 2006.. a great first 5 games, sucked heaps of coaches in to throw pie rounds from then on.. in my opinion im not jumping on the harding bandwagon yet..

dub's$men Says: 7:51 pm, April 8th, 2009

also.. did anyone besides me notice how many times haselby handballed rather than kicked… prob due to him getting the hardball and handballing out of danger.. is a worry tho that he got plenty of disposals but a shower DT score..

i will be keeping a close eye on him this week.. he’ll go up in value and then might flog him off for zakarakis or beams if necessary.. will also free up some cash for an upgrade later…

james Says: 7:53 pm, April 8th, 2009

Dalziel isnt a problem player thats stupid to trade him out. Had one bad game.. wasnt even his fault.. they just hit the beast that is carltons inform midfield.. Did you watch the 2nd qtr.. its was all carlton.. don’t think many brisbane players scored well against that tidal wave.. Remember he got 115 in his first game.. Brisbanes playing Sydney this week.. he might be down a bit.. As he gets most of possies in loose space..So i wouldn’t read too into this score this week either..

Hayden Churchill Says: 7:57 pm, April 8th, 2009

i am simply downgrading hasleby to either otten/zaharkis/beams and i have nerves about chosing the wrong one lol. Dont no whether to then use the money to trade hill or raines for waite. The clear choice was hill until i heard news that raines had complication to his surjery and may be out for another 4 weeks??

thoughts?

james Says: 7:58 pm, April 8th, 2009

But yes daziell is bad SC player racks it up in DT though.. but to get consistently 10-20 PPG less than his scores there gotta be something wrong there.. I didn’t pick him for that reason.. So yeh might be worth the trade to a decent SC notable scorer..

hadley Says: 8:09 pm, April 8th, 2009

hmm…

This is my SC team. I have been liking dalziell less and less. ( i thought he would be the next dan cross, but he has been dissappointing.) His outside play means the 28 disposals could still score <80.

Hadley on the other hand averages 8 tackles per game, and score from contested posesions. The likes of stevens and corrazzo will not affect his scores, he could average 100 , probably 90-100. And at his price he will alow me to upgrade bock.

The crows will be harsh on bock to send a message, i think he will be out for 4 weeks, and yes, including the ’showdown’. I want to trade him.

ATM im thinking:

Dalziell to Hadley
Bock to Gilbee
30k left over
Raines on Bench

How about these trades, assuming i hold onto the dazzler…

Bock to Ellis
Raines to Houlihan
(leaving hill and suban on the bench)
72k added to the kitty.

What do u think?

oddsok Says: 8:11 pm, April 8th, 2009

I seriously considering trading Hill to either of Cheney/Petrenko, but I’m still not sure if I’m wasting a trade since I have 3 playing rookies in the backs(Hill, Suban and Rance.)

Brad Says: 8:12 pm, April 8th, 2009

Anthony out for Robinson seems obvious to me. Iv got Broughton, Hill, Raines, Petrenko in the backs. 30k in the bank. Ideas on who to trade for who would be appreciated. Cheers.

Da Gangsta Says: 8:17 pm, April 8th, 2009

Malceski has been dissapionting, does anyone think he will turn it around?

DS01 Says: 8:31 pm, April 8th, 2009

Luke Shuey was placed on the Eagles LTI list this week.

lovepelican Says: 8:32 pm, April 8th, 2009

I have Raines, Hill, Suban and Broughton in the backline.

Last week, scraped by with Hill and Suban in team (although combined were nearly the same as getting a donut).

I am intending to make no trades and risk a donut or two. The main reason for this is that both Hill and Suban have played twice, albeit rather poorly. I hate trading rookies until they have at least played 3 games and made me a few dollars (I note these two may never make it to 3 games).

I think Broughton will get the nod (he has been very good in the WAFL)this week.

If Raines is back in two weeks I can not see any point in trading him for someone I never wanted in the first place.

Lastly, the approach means no trades used!!

Risky, I know, especially if someone else goes down (I have cover in mids, ruck (well White/Jacobs)and forwards so could take one hit in each of these.

Any thoughts on the strategy.

p.s I am not really thinking about the overall price, just winning my league.

sam Says: 8:35 pm, April 8th, 2009

wat about houli
is he gonna get a game coz hes forcin me 2 play hill in the starting backs

Bob Says: 8:44 pm, April 8th, 2009

In the end made two changes for both my teams:
DT - O’Keefe for Johnson & Malceski for Harding
SC - Mackie to Goddard & Dalziell to Gibbs

Yes i have traded out 4 guns but if i keep them in this week i would be looking at losing between 30k and 50k for each of them, that outweighs any of the cash cows I already have. They all had to go!

Eddie Says: 8:51 pm, April 8th, 2009

A lot of people say don’t trade now you will waste a trade but this is probably the only round where I think you can get rid of someone you think is actually not going to do what you thought.

I know only a couple of games make a season but after this week prices will dive and you may as well stick with them at that point whether they improve or not.

I call this fix a problem round. If your gut tells you you have stuffed up on a selection (particularly if they are worth some dough) fix it now or suck it up for the rest of the season.

The ONLY round in the year where this is a good idea.

Shagz Says: 8:55 pm, April 8th, 2009

I’m thinking of trading Hill to either Cheney or Rance and then Raines up to Houlihan. I’d still have 18 trades then and would hope not to have to touch the backline again till cash cow culling time.

What are your thoughts on either Cheney or Rance? Already have Broughton and Petrenko.

oddsok Says: 9:02 pm, April 8th, 2009

@Bob:

It is only lost money if you end up trading them once their price has dropped. And Goddard is going to drop as much as any of if not more. Bad move.

Batesy Says: 9:03 pm, April 8th, 2009

Monty - Coaches Box tonight?

Macca Says: 9:03 pm, April 8th, 2009

I like Sam Gilbert and picked him before Rd 1

I think Leigh Harding will do a similar role so I would pick him now before his price goes up.

Or cash him in with Grimes when he comes back from injury

Even if you upgrade him later its not a bad solution (wasted trade)

Of course I didn’t have Bock or Shaw in my backline so it was a blessing.

I note a comment somewhere that taggers are becoming obsolete so the likes of Gibbs and Selwood will get more possession than last year.

If Rich plays well enough I might even upgrade him to Selwood (WCE) if he continues to rack up the numbers like that.

ronl Says: 9:04 pm, April 8th, 2009

@da gansta

At first thought Malceski would take up Kennealy’s role as defensive sweeper, but not quick enough.. round 2 much better when they moved him up the ground, SC problem is that he’s too much an outside type, but I’m sticking with him, hope he might average 85-90ish…

m0nty Says: 9:06 pm, April 8th, 2009

Indeed yes, a Coaches Box tonight.

Barry Says: 9:18 pm, April 8th, 2009

Should I trade Raines or hold onto him?
Was thinking either trade this week for Gilbert.

Or hold until Jed Adcocks price drops

Brady Says: 9:33 pm, April 8th, 2009

Think i will get rid of hill for Houlihan, good move? reckon Houlihan will stay in the team and produce “ok” scores?

XztatiK Says: 9:41 pm, April 8th, 2009

Yeah Reilly is an interesting one monty. He is one of the fittest guys at the club but is certainly having some fade-outs lately. He’s not taking as many marks, or laying as many tackles (apart from Q1 R1 where he had four) as I was hoping for.

Ash Says: 9:44 pm, April 8th, 2009

Josha,
rich for kerr (kerr dominated in round 2)

Andy Says: 9:50 pm, April 8th, 2009

Firstly I think everyone who has Dalziel should trade him out now, because judging by his game last week he has suddenly realised that its not natural for a young-un like him to score so many 100s so early, so trade away people… then maybe buy him back in a few weeks when he smashes it again… their just trades and you have so many of them…

Also can anyone give me any info on Broughton playing this week? Any links to articles etc?

mcwarne Says: 9:51 pm, April 8th, 2009

I have seen it all now. I figured that seeing as you run this site Monty, you would be well experienced at playing DT. I havent done a single trade and anybody who has done even one at this early stage is either nuts or 14. Yeah and I am carrying Raines, Broughton, LAnthony, Hentschel and others but surely this game is about short term pain for long term gain. See you all at the finish line. Oh yeah, no I wont!!

Denim Dan Says: 10:00 pm, April 8th, 2009

Leigh Harding….
Hmmmmm such a tasty topic

Potentially an early cash cow and upgrade to a bock/fisher in a few weeks?

I need to pull out my rifle and start culling some eagles (ie sphanger and butler), they jumped on my DT train early this year but their tickets are well expired.

Butler > Zaka
Spanner > ??? Leigh harding??? (Crinches)

cdrobert Says: 10:00 pm, April 8th, 2009

yeah i went with Reilly as well. i think i will stick with him a bit longer. its not like hes not get the ball. a few more marks would help his score

vagiant Says: 10:14 pm, April 8th, 2009

I’ve gone Harvey to Richo

Drum to Lake

Dissapointed with drum as he was a smokey i thought would payoff

Jimmy Says: 10:14 pm, April 8th, 2009

This week of dream team is doing my head in.

still deciding on whether to trade
Haselby > Hocking
Hill < Harding

Then trading Hocking in about 4-6 weeks time for a keeper

Or

Hill < Gilbert and keep a trade then maybe Haselby to T.Tuck next week.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

craig Says: 10:15 pm, April 8th, 2009

I am sticking to my guns and not trading in Houlihan despite everyone’s love for him. Personally I hate him. Think he’s crap, and only doing OK because Carlton have been gunning it… (not that this is a bad thing to do in DT if Carlton keep gunning it, which i am sure they will do, so maybe I’m the crap predictor, oh well)

You can all pick him up. In fact i think i’m the only person in one of my leagues without him.

Similarly i don’t think Harding’s form will last. Gun or rookie from here on out. None of this drop an out of form gun, pick up an in-form or back from injury or new role playing twat.

craig Says: 10:19 pm, April 8th, 2009

Oh and just to add, yes monty i did the premium backline like you. Worked brilliantly! Only out in my backline has been Raines. Hodge, Lockyer, Fisher, Cornes, Adcock all loving it up. Laughing at how broke other people’s backlines are. Not worried at all with Hodge or Adcock. Don’t care about 2 games performance.

drFaust Says: 10:25 pm, April 8th, 2009

I’m suffering from Bockopalypse Now and Hamburger “Hill”.

My bench consists of Broughton and Hurley so I’m thinking that Hill=>Houlihan with my spare $$ is probably a must while I wait for Bock to come back and tear it up for the rest of the year.

Cam Says: 10:28 pm, April 8th, 2009

hehe, still have 8 playing backmen with Broughton the only one not playing. No trades and none planned as yet.

Huge Action Says: 10:35 pm, April 8th, 2009

Raines will struggle to get back in the side. as a tigers supporter he is referred to as ‘the butcher’ by us for his shocking disposal of the ball. he is a turnover king and may find it hard to get back into the team. here is one that hopes so for the sake of the Tigers.

Lee Says: 10:44 pm, April 8th, 2009

I traded out L.Anthony and A.Raines for D.Rich, K.Cheney and a cash boost after Rd1. After Rd2 I traded out Hasleby (who i’ve always been uneasy about) and S.Hill for Zakharakis and L.Harding and yet more cash.

I’m overloaded with Rookies - Petrenko, Cheney, Broughton, Beams, Robinson, Rich, Zakharakis, Jacobs, Garlett, Walker and Brown (WCE).

Jacko Says: 10:51 pm, April 8th, 2009

i was lucky enuf to have hill, raines, bock and heath shaw(shud have read something bout his 1st rd ommision), also had ottens…

@ Bob - you’ve missed the point completely! Bad moves.

Tim Says: 11:00 pm, April 8th, 2009

I can’t believe how many people are doing sideways guns trades. Absolutely insane. Trading Dalzeill, Harvey…just staggered so many people keen enough to muck around on these sites would break almost the number #1 no-no.

As said above - it matters not if their prices slip for a while, you bought them for long-term points, not price rises. Your team value is meaningless.

Guys - don’t do it!!!

bummer Says: 11:22 pm, April 8th, 2009

Nothing to do with backs but have a dilemma, ottens hurt and cant decide between Kreuzer or Gardiner

AdamG03 Says: 1:26 am, April 9th, 2009

I can’t believe people are getting rid of Dalziel.

He scored 60 against Carlton, but didn’t Nathan G Brown score 57 against Carlton the week before? And Deledio 85.

This is before they ripped Geelong open for 135 and 111 respectively.

Carlton have been reducing DT scores pretty well so i am not worried about Dalziell at all.

However i am one who fell prey to the Backopalypse.

I actually had Harding before the year but instead went with Malceski (Who i think can still come good)

I have Hill, Suban, Broughton and Raines in those 4 back spots (2 starting, 2 bench)

IDEAS:

Raines -> Petrenko
Hill -> Cheney
Unlikely i will bring in two cash cows, probably just Petrenko.

Raines -> Petrenko
Hill -> Gilbert

Raines -> Petrenko and then wait a week for
Hill -> Rance

I’m lost
Help much appreciated
Thanks
AdamG03

pascoe Says: 1:30 am, April 9th, 2009

lol @ all u DT coaches who are trading dalziell after 1 poor game. you are all so stupid. gibbs won’t get anywhere near 150 each week and dalziell will get a lot higher than 60 each week. keep dalziell and he will provide good scores

WorstDTerEva4Life Says: 1:33 am, April 9th, 2009

If players in your team are about to drop price i.e. look at their breakevens. My advice is to trade them out for Rookies and cheap people coming back from injury like Haselby, Lucas, Malceski etc. trade those guys in and drop ppl like Pavlich for Lucas, Mackie for Malceski etc. then when those cheap guys go up again buy back Pavlich or Mackie for cheap and save yourself $40k. Definitely worth the two trades IMHO

Also ppl like McPhee that are out for a week are worth trading out cause if you get 1 zero in your backline you are SCREWED for the rest of the season. Donuts = fail @ DT. Even if you have rookies to cover on your bench you shouldn’t as they’ll only score the equivalent of a zero anyway.

Best bet is to use 10 or more trades in rounds 1,2,3 to pick up all those players who are in form now, as that will be the way for the rest of the season. People that have played crap in rounds 1 and 2 are never going to be the same as they were last year or a few years before that. E.g. Riewoldt is going to suck… and be the equivalent of a Medhurst @ the dockers. Harvey is going to be like a Mark Nicoski. Joel Selwood is going to break all his legs and be out injured for half the year.

Liam Quinn TMQ Says: 1:44 am, April 9th, 2009

i totally agree peter… Bob they are terrible trades!

To all the rest of you going into a trade frenzy… I pitty you all. Where have you all been for the last 4 years? Have you not learnt how important trades are? I agree with Tim.. It is staggering.

But by all means go ahead and trade!
Oh and to Andy… to trade Dalziel… wait til he drops in price and then trade him back in.. totally defeats the purpose of having limited trades. Don’t be wondering why you only have 21 fit players come round 18.

Liam Quinn TMQ Says: 1:49 am, April 9th, 2009

WorstDTer4eva- either some clever satire or you have absolutely no clue!

craigo Says: 1:58 am, April 9th, 2009

stop....hammertime Says: 1:59 am, April 9th, 2009

@EDDIE
I agree this round is when you can do sideways trades to discard players that you think will not benefit you in the long run.
OUT FOLEY IN ZAHARAKIS
OUT HILL IN S.FISHER
Foley i thought would step it up this year but he looks like it wont happen. Hill not up to AFL just yet.
Plus with Foley & Hill id be lucky to get 120 points a week whereas Fisher & Zara i think will net me 170 a week.

WorstDTerEva4Life Says: 1:59 am, April 9th, 2009

Wait i forgot to mention Darren Glass. Methinks this year will be his breakout year! :P

WorstDTerEva4Life Says: 2:01 am, April 9th, 2009

@stop…hammertime…

WHY TRADE FOLEY NOW?

STUPID!

Why not wait another week. Take the price increase from foley and seem Zaha’s REAL form and then decide?

stop....hammertime Says: 2:09 am, April 9th, 2009

@worstdteva…talking SC …i dont see foley gaining any significant money to hold off trading.By doing this trade i can get Fisher to replace Hill on the field (Huge points difference) and Rich to replace Foley on the field(Rich is actually scoring more than foley).Ill be gaining approx 90 points extra p/week hopefully.
Im going for overall ranking so i think 2 trades well worth it.
back to you

benno Says: 2:15 am, April 9th, 2009

i think what’s becoming obvious this year is that dogma gets us nowhere.
“don’t swap premiums”, “keep your trades”, etc etc are just tired old lines. they probably also told clarkson “zones never work” [forget the hawks' success this year for a sec].
anything goes. trade if you want. the point is to make it a smart one, and if you can’t then don’t trade. for instance, why is brad [7.18pm] wondering if he should trade wells for gibbs? of course, do it bros and do it now.

monty, good to see you back, i have similar troubles. 99 problems and a back ain’t just one. after fixing raines i now have hill, who will be dropped soon. answer? fix it. bring in hurn, unless gilham or ellis look better. ottens out? bring in jolly and cash in.

with the prices set to change, this the most important trade week outside the finals. trade now. cash in. then hold off for a while in the early rounds.
JMHO

XztatiK Says: 2:41 am, April 9th, 2009

Good post benno. spot on.

I’m sick of hearing all these rules/people not moving from their structures etc.

ImSoHood Says: 3:02 am, April 9th, 2009

trying my best to keep it cool … not being burnt in the backs as yet but have many backs i wish came with a crystal ball haha. decided razzle -> bryce with some left over $ was ok in SC, ive used just the 1 trade in a fortnight, & o’keefe -> didak in DT. rOk is collecting more snowflakes than he is kicks. may be eating my words eventually but the harding gravy train is merely that.

ps. fingers crossed for a boomer B.O.G!

Liam Quinn TMQ Says: 3:28 am, April 9th, 2009

WorstDTerEva4Life Says: 3:29 am, April 9th, 2009

Um… you don’t have Rich?@!@!#:P

You said Foley -> Zaha

Foley -> Rich is an entirely different prospect. How did you not have Rich? If not, what rookies did you have in the mids?! Are your mids too rookie-centric now? (Not that this is bad provided that there are at least 2 rookie trade down targets during the season.

astrofrankie Says: 3:35 am, April 9th, 2009

whats this talk about Goddard underperforming? he’s my number 1 back (with waite) and I thought he was going ok, cant expect 140 every week. (s/c, don’t play d/t). Can’t imagine anyone trading him. Bock is obviously a different issue. I think he will get just the 1 week and come back even better than he was (if thats possible). alot of players have renewed attitudes after this sort of thing. think dane swan after his fed square incident, his next year was his break out year.(speaking as a pie supporter, not fantasy coach) Didak has bounced back and looks even classier this year as does A. Lovett. (I’d reckon andy krakouer would be dominating in the rec yard too). So i’m definitely keeping bock, have had him for years.
As for sideways trades, I was pretty close to trading boomer for leon davis and wells to dal santo(still have 20 trades) but its possible both my outgoing players will outscore my incoming players so went against it and will hold on to them. with beams playing now and looking like he will keep his spot (what a great debut, just snuffed out by zaharakis for r/s nom.) i think i can nurse L anthony till he plays though im sure if zaha plays another cracker the temptation will be to strong. have rich and otten also, hill(my only regret selection) broughton and cheney down back,( please play this week broughton) standard ruck rookies, with brown and walker warming the forward bench. got lucky by avoiding the early injuries (only anthony of course) and if my luck can hold out am looking forward to making plenty of trades in the last 7 rounds to absolutely storm home. currently ranked 5000 odd.

ps. love you work monty, but bit worried about marcus the supercoachcoach. can you ask him if he can score me some dakha.?

ImSoHood Says: 3:37 am, April 9th, 2009

trade now yea … but dont chase scores. hindsight is certainly not a wonderful thing

jazz Says: 3:50 am, April 9th, 2009

i have barry hall, and i sideways traded him for fevola just now. i hated doing it, but i took a big risk on hall, and the sight of him coming off sore against the hawks nearly made me punch someone. i have other underperforming 400 k players (SC) such as adock, j selwood, deledio etc, but i am not gonna trade them after 2 rds. hall is injury prone and old, and i really needed a solid 2 game performance early to keep him.

Dicko Says: 3:59 am, April 9th, 2009

Got Raines, Hill, Bock, and Broughton in my backline.

Will trade S Tuck (who I swapped for Gibbs in a moment of madness two days before the first lockout and have regreted ever since)for Rich. I have Beams, Robinson and Anthony already. Then I will trade Hill for Harding and retain $125,00 cash.

So tempted to trade Gibbs back in but all this would do is fix my earlier error not my backs.

astrofrankie Says: 4:18 am, April 9th, 2009

jazz,

You’ve been ripped off. I paid 550K for Delidio, but I got a gun, who will not only lead me to supercoach glory, but who i would never ever trade. He was my first player selected. (son of god doesn’t count because he’s not a selection, he’s a pre-requisite) For 400K, you must have bought a cheap china import. Poor man pays twice.
Buy Australian Made.

Hall and Adcock? gee, you were taking risks. Don’t suppose you had Henshel and Lucas too. Right move with Hall though, the Fev was my 2nd picked.

Findlay Says: 6:35 am, April 9th, 2009

I am WCE fan and have Mark Nicoski in my back line, against the advice of a friend.
Still I put him in as he scored well DT wise in the NAB Cup. And while he hasn’t backed that up in the first two home and away rounds, I will retain him as at 263,700 he fits into my budget for backs and will play games consistently I think.

Leathal Says: 9:03 am, April 9th, 2009

As a richmond fan, was disturbed yesterday to hear (from a strong source within the club) that Raines wont be back until rounds 6-8, If true is it worth keeping him on the bench?

Charlie Says: 9:40 am, April 9th, 2009

@ XztatiK & Benno and others…

The reason I think most of these sideways trades are bad ideas is two-fold:

1. The coach has done weeks of homework and planning. They’ve picked 30 players for certain reasons. Then just because a gun has 1-2 quieter games (ie. Harvey, Dalziell) or a player has probably his two best games of the year (ie. Harding), they decide to throw common sense and their homework out the window and chase last week’s points. (remember: Lids had two shocking weeks at the start of last year and ended up the 7th best player! How many wanted to trade N Brown last week…then he scores 130.)

2. This is a rare week when almost all player’s prices are about to change BUT you’ve had a look at them play. Shouldn’t this week be used to shore up the cash cows and rooks now we know who is good / bad? ie. Make sure that the players whose prices will rise are the ones you’ll want to be trading. Consider:

Harvey will come good and earn well. But maybe he gets 5-10pts a week less than you hoped (ie. 100-200 over the year). Harvey’s price is irrelevant as there’s no need to trade a gun. Harvey plays every week, every season. Price irrelevant.

vs

Trade a dud rook for a better rook: you’ll earn an extra 1,000 - 1,500pts and $250,000 that you CAN use for an upgrade to ANOTHER gun later on. It seems so obvious that this is a far better use of the trade this week.

Maybe this is all wrong, but this is the way I look at it.

Fatty Says: 10:04 am, April 9th, 2009

(SC) Traded Masten for Gibbs as Masten MAY come good while Gibbs already has. I also traded out the injured Otto for McIntosh, saving myself 60 Grand.

Last week I traded out Cousins (what was I thinking DOH) for Rich. 3 trades down already with 200k in the bank but I still have Raines and Hentschell limping around on my bench. If Broughton can get a few games I might keep Raines until he comes back in.

Five injuries in the first eleven matches of the year hasn’t helped.

Fats.

Lyndzel Says: 11:29 am, April 9th, 2009

Yesterday there were claims that Ablett had been injured at training. This was confirmed by Monty. Today all traces of this news has been wiped from the site. Whats the deal?

lenny Says: 11:57 am, April 9th, 2009

in a similar position with my backs. trading collier to cheney and raines to houlihan.. thoughts?

Mr Gor Says: 12:03 pm, April 9th, 2009

IMO, this week of trading should be used to make money. Sideways trades should only be used in the case of (for example) Malceski for Harding, where a guy around the same price is going off. I have Pavlich and am EXTREMELY tempted to get rid of him but I figure I’ll hang on… for now.

I have Shane Tuck, and after watching both of his games I’ve decided he has to go (too many cheap possie getters at Richmond), and that his $404k price tag can be used on either Gibbs or yet another cash cow. I Already have Beams/Rich/Otten, and was thinking of manging up Hocking. Then I could use that extra kesh to upgrade Raines to a premium back to help cover for Bock.

That way I’d be solving 4 “problems”:
Getting rid of Tuck who I don’t think will cut it, gaining a cash cow, getting rid of Raines (who isn’t a great DTer anyway), and solidifying a crumbling backline with another premium.

The backline needs premium dude!! PREMIUUUUUM….. DUUUDE

(Sorry for the long post, I know nobody really cares about my team/trades, but still..)

hamish Says: 12:05 pm, April 9th, 2009

Broughton (not being picked)

Trade Joel Selwood for Mitch Robinson and Hentschell for Richo. Stupid?

James Says: 12:55 pm, April 9th, 2009

Now Duffield’s been named in the WAFL team for tonight’s game so another back bites the dust. Typical Harvey keep Hill in to spite his critics and drop Duff.

Tim Says: 12:55 pm, April 9th, 2009

Scott - yes. Just going around in circles. Two trades to cover a rookie who will miss 3-4 games????

'Cho Says: 1:09 pm, April 9th, 2009

Keep it simple….

the real stuff hasn’t even started yet!!

Scott Says: 1:10 pm, April 9th, 2009

It wasn’t to cover as much as move a premium from the mids where rookies are rife to the forwards where rooks are scarce.

I guess the question is, is the scoring potential difference between Joel Selwood and Mitch Robinson greater than the scoring potential difference between Hentschell and Richo, and is that difference worth two trades?

Dicko Says: 1:20 pm, April 9th, 2009

Scott - Got to agree with Tim

Scott Says: 1:35 pm, April 9th, 2009

Ahhh, fair enough. Doesn’t hurt to throw these ideas out there…

Guido Says: 1:57 pm, April 9th, 2009

@Scott…. good choice - J.Selwood has started slow and is a premium player that will bring you great rewards! Hold onto him…

@Zedman - nice way of words, might have to tie a leash from Hill to the goal posts

@everyone else… why all this sideways trading!? you buy a premium player for a reason: they’re premium players! don’t swap them for a mediocre player thats played two red hot games and looks to gain $30k after the weekend, you’ll regret it later when this mediocre player starts scoring what they’re really worth!

matt Says: 1:58 pm, April 9th, 2009

traded henderson for collier, and put raines on my bench along side petrenko, and i kept shaw in hope for a apperance in the 2nd round (round 1)
then collier didnt play rd.2
so… i put collier on my bench, put petrneko on the field
and spangher didnt play, so i traded, spangher for cheney,
then i had ottens and he did his knee, so i traded him for jesse white, hoping he can back up his 103 against the hawks this week
then i traded dawson who was on my bench for ryan houlihan
in all my backine has been a disaster

Gooser Says: 2:26 pm, April 9th, 2009

Couldnt continue to carry Wells so had to make a double trade with Hodge to bring in Waite and Judd.

Averaging 2173 to the moment so should increase this week with Wells out.

The3rd Says: 3:14 pm, April 9th, 2009

I don’t want to have to play Suban and Hill again.. I’d rather cop a double donut than be put through that pain again.

Charles Carmichael Says: 3:20 pm, April 9th, 2009

In regards to Greg Broughton, this snippet from the West today:

Yeah, Ablett rolled his ankle at training and now has a shoulder-related hammy.

Last week Judd, this week Ablett….

ShrewDext Says: 3:28 pm, April 9th, 2009

@ Gooser

You’re averaging 2173 whilst carrying Hodge and Wells.

Imagine what you could be scoring when Hodge and Well were to contribute? Now you will never know.

Good luck running your race in the first 10 Rnds. You will be traded out of the game at the pointy end unfortunatly.

Smit Says: 3:32 pm, April 9th, 2009

Houlihan & Gilbers should be certainties, best value picks in the backline. Broughton has to play sooner or later, they have nothing else….

Scott Says: 3:35 pm, April 9th, 2009

Heater, I wasn’t suggesting trading out J. Selwood because he’s a dud, I was suggesting trading him out to move the cash into my forward line. Effectively swapping Selwood for S.Johnson to swap Hentschell for M.Robinson.

Anyways, I’ve decided to go for the safer, less contraversial trades of Hill out and Hentschell for whomever is listed.

oddsok Says: 4:01 pm, April 9th, 2009

I’m probably going to trade out Hill for Cheney. Don’t like the look of his BE of 55. Will pocket some cash in the process.

Still not sure if I’m wasting a trade though. I have no real need to trade Hill, but I’m unsure of his cash cow potential at this point in time, whereas Cheney is a definate cow.

Superfist Says: 4:55 pm, April 9th, 2009

@ ‘Cho
Good reasoning, poor execution. Bartel is far from an inside mid these days. Not saying he won’t dominate.

hmac Says: 4:56 pm, April 9th, 2009

simple trade this week

out Crowley
in Rich

expected a wee bit more from Crowley but it looks obvious what is role is.

Nice result here…instead of getting stuck with crowley and watching him drop gradually to $200, i’ll pick up the $50K from rich and you would think he will score better too in future rounds

Brendan Smith Says: 5:15 pm, April 9th, 2009

DT

Out Ottens
Out Raines

In Cheney
In Kozie

SC
Out Raines
Out Anthony

In Cheney
In Joseph

thoughts?

Mitch Says: 5:23 pm, April 9th, 2009

@ Fudd sorry mate lol

@ Brendan Smith there are better choices than Joseph

Roger Ramjet Says: 5:34 pm, April 9th, 2009

This thread should be time capsuled for all the noobs to read next year under the title: How not to trade!

Brendan Smith Says: 5:53 pm, April 9th, 2009

@ Roger

no point trading rains for anyone who is of the same vale as they are all scoring the same as cheney. (I feal rain will be out for more than2 weeks)

with anthony out for six i would prefer to burn a trade and have a cash cow than have a cookie on the bench not playing.

have yo made any outstanding trades? if so what where these pearls of wisdom?

oddsok Says: 5:57 pm, April 9th, 2009

If I trade in Cheney for Hill I pocket ~$60,000 and if Cheney scores 50ish he will rish ~$40,000, which is a net gain of $100,000. I’m just wondering if it is worth the trade. Right now I’m thinking it is, but I’ll wait to see the teams.

Sam Says: 6:08 pm, April 9th, 2009

Hey is Robinson still a worthwhile acquisition?

I currently have Anthony on the pine (with Beams) and am tossing up whether to wait a week for Zaharakis or pulling the pin now and welcoming in Robo. He is one week ahead of Zaha so should be more juicier at the time of harvest.

But can Robinson hold is spot when Carrazzo comes back in? Walker’s ongoing injury will help his cause immensly.

Brendan Smith Says: 6:46 pm, April 9th, 2009

Robinson has the runs on the board Beams or Zaha could do anything this week…even get injured.

Robinson is a big SOB i have him and recommend him.

Kendog Says: 6:46 pm, April 9th, 2009

@ Sam - wait to see the teams, Robinson no certainty to maintain his place with Stevens coming in

brad Says: 7:06 pm, April 9th, 2009

Out: Hurley
In: Cheney

Out: Hentschel
In: Houlihan

Should have had houlihan from day dot but went with Geary in the backline instead…picking him up in the forward line now…

tom Says: 7:39 pm, April 9th, 2009

raines out in both DT and SC for Hurn in both. considered ditching nickoski, but think its better to have someone playing rather than the unknown raines on the bench
?

The Bomber Says: 7:48 pm, April 9th, 2009

I balance my team out over the 3 position

Defenders: (31.6%) 541
Midfielders: (31.4%) 537
Rucks: (7.7%) 131
Forwards: (29.3%) (2 players not playing in my forward line)

last year i went with a excellent backline and it didnt go so well and this year i believe the prospects are in the forward line

tom Says: 7:53 pm, April 9th, 2009

yes broughton is in!

AdamG03 Says: 8:04 pm, April 9th, 2009

At the moment i have Broughton and Suban on the field. Hill emergency.
Raines sittin on the pine accumulating dust lol

If i do Raines to Cheney or Petrenko, theyre goin in for Suban and Suban made EMG.

Do i make the trade of Raines to Cheney or Petrenko? Or do i not make any trade?

dylan Says: 8:18 pm, April 9th, 2009

AdamGo3, i think you should do the trade. Its going to give u around a extra 100k and who knows if Richmond might decide to put Raines in the VFL first to get a bit of confidence up on the knee. Not sure who you would pick out of Cheney or Petrenko though. Cheney might have some people fighting for his spot next week if he has another shocker while atm Petrenko has got himself a spot in the side for a bit longer with Knights injured for a little bit i believe.

Ok now i have a question. Should i trade Anthony to Robinson then downgrade Reilly to Danger? I believe i can make a fair bit of cash from both while Reilly is just getting me rather average scores. I could then put on Otten for where Reilly was and have Danger and Robinson on the bench making me money. Also with doing this downgrade it gives me about 150k to then next week upgrade hill and only have 1 rookie in my backline starting which i feel a bit safer with. How does this sound? Too risky/waste of a trade?

AdamG03 Says: 8:22 pm, April 9th, 2009

Thanks for the advice, yeh i talked myself into Petrenko over Cheney because i was never intending to keep Raines at all. Even if both Cheney and Petrenko are dropped. Lets say other guys get fit, Cheney is waiting behind Wonaemirri, Whelan, Daniel Bell (Not even counting Wheatley 6 wks, Garland indefinite) whilst Petrenko has less competition and can play fwd as well as back.

Anthony to Robinson, although a sideways trade will net u cash, but im keeping Anthony, he will get a run when fit. Or id look at Beams and Zaharakis next week. I have Robinson already.

Reilly to Danger is ok if u believe Danger would get a game. Andy Otten is a better pick IMO.

dylan Says: 8:29 pm, April 9th, 2009

Yeah i think Danger will get a fair few games with how he looked last week. Got Otten and am thinking of starting him on field. Rather risky but since i downgraded raines last week i will have 250k in the back which i will then be able to either upgrade hill or wait a few weeks then hopefully upgrade a rookie to a premium mid.

Raf Says: 8:46 pm, April 9th, 2009

Dumped Raines and Butler for Harding and Robinson, and wishing I did it last week.

I was considering holding Raines, but I also have Bock.

Next week’s decision will be whether I should switch Anthony for one of Zaharakis/Beams, I guess.

I’m not interested in a switch of Hill for Cheney unless Cheney surprises me and has another big game this week. I don’t think he’s going to make too much before he’s dropped, personally. Hill will sit there, playing or not, increasing in value or not, until I can afford to upgrade him with the cash from someone like Taylor Walker.

hmac Says: 8:51 pm, April 9th, 2009

now duffield gets dropped and head plays
wtf
duff only averaged 85 in two games

yeah awesome harves…tool bag

dub's$men Says: 8:53 pm, April 9th, 2009

does anyone else think that 2009 has thrown up a great selection of midfield rookies.. i don’t think too many (4) rookies in your midfield is such a bad thing this year..

make 4 trades and turn two of them into guns and still have a couple of scoring rookies on the bench..

(beams, zaharakis, anthony???, rich, ottens, robinson)

stop....hammertime Says: 1:43 am, April 10th, 2009

@WorstDTEva
no always had Rich but now can move him on the field instead of on the bench.
My Midfield is Ablett,Selwood,Judd,T.Tuck,C.Morton,Rich
EMG- Beams & Zaka.

fryzie Says: 1:54 pm, April 10th, 2009

Heath Shaw reported for contact with an umpire, Scotland dropped. Backline woes continue.

Frogtrotter Says: 2:11 pm, April 10th, 2009

Dumped Raines week 1 as i thought this risk was too high for the rest of the season for cheney, and malceski (had a great game last week and still only 59 points) for cough Harding.

I hate chasing point scorers after theve alreay performed but the $ upside was too good to ignore.

My concerns know are the fact ive got petrenko, cheney, hill, broughton and geary as my bottom 5 - very thin.

zman Says: 2:57 pm, April 10th, 2009

scotland tore his hammy bad, out for at least 4 weeks! carlton keeping it under wraps!

quelt Says: 3:57 pm, April 10th, 2009

I upgraded hill to houlihan, decided to keep raines on the bench for now.

i don’t think hill has showed enough to warrant keeping him, early call i know but i reckon petrenko and cheney are the way to go. raines will come back, and did look good until his injury.

aza03 Says: 8:05 pm, April 10th, 2009

judging by some of these posts, i fared well in the backopalypse…

I had raines at the start but traded him out for drummond, as i had some spare cash remaining. I honestly think drummond will do well this year as he is moving more freely than he has in the past and is not underdone like last year.

i already had houlihan and cheney and petrenko on the bench, so ive only had to make one trade in the backline. pretty lucky compared to some people…

i agree with what quelt said though. raines was looking the goods before his injury, and could be a nice downgrade target during the year.

aza03 Says: 9:10 pm, April 10th, 2009

where did u hear that zman?

thats big new if its true…

zman Says: 11:51 pm, April 10th, 2009

i have good sources at carlton. scotland being dropped out of the blue is a little suss. hammy tear!

benno Says: 2:51 am, April 11th, 2009

must be comedy festival in melbourne and this bloke fudd is very funny.

@charlie - agreed. not much point doing sideways trades unless you have trades to burn and genuine form slump. much as i’d like gibbs i will keep bartel cause i picked him for the year, not for two weeks. but if a 300k player isn’t performing and an 84k rookie is, i say do the trade, get the point and cash in before the prices rise.
going the other way, i burned some cash and stephen hill, got x ellis, now should be set for a while.

Jacko Says: 11:14 am, April 13th, 2009

sorry benno but ellis got injured on sunday didnt he?

haha Says: 3:00 pm, April 13th, 2009

zman ur a tool. check ur carlton sources.

duckboy Says: 5:33 am, April 14th, 2009

anyone know what happened to bachar houli?
I can’t find any info that he is injured

tomma Says: 12:29 pm, April 14th, 2009

Houli has been playing in the 2’s. Had a good game on the weekend, just now gotta squeeze into bomber’s starting 22.

The O Says: 12:19 am, April 15th, 2009

I need some feedback:

1. Is swapping two young backs (petrenko/cheney/hill) for raines or grimes a good move. Grimes and raines are decent and i can use the money to upgrade later.

2. Is it worth swapping bock for gram or anyone else for that matter.

3. Should i get waite when jamison comes back as waite is having to do a job each week. THX

Bob Says: 12:17 pm, April 15th, 2009

can any tell me how much richo and didak are worth in dreamteam because im at work and they’ve blocked the dreamteam site

Bob Says: 12:20 pm, April 15th, 2009

@ The O
I reckon keep bock coz he could be back this week and he pulls big numbers. wait until raines has played 2 games and trade one of ur young backs. i dont know about waite tho

Porps_is_HOT_loz Says: 7:23 pm, April 15th, 2009

@ The O

1. I dont get why you would do that? Do you mean downgrade Raines/Grimes to a youngster :S If that is the case, keep Raines, I have been asking the same question and people suggest to keep him unless Tigers dont have him in there best 22.

2. I have Bock aswell and i’m tempted to trade him unless he is named this week. It might be a waste of a trade to trade a premium/keeper if you have good backup on the bench.

3. Umm.. get Waite only if you wanna, but I didnt see the game last week so dunno if his possie has changed with Jamo gone, but if it has, consider waiting.

Everyone, do you think I should downgrade Otten to Zacca? It is pretty stupid but Zacca was always one of my favourites in the under 18 championships and he has huge potential and I personally think he will stay in the bombers 22 unless he gets injured. This cash will also help me later throughout the year.
Ooooooooor I can downgrade Otten next week to a first gamer?

Omg.. that was a long comment :S :P

bozzy_lad Says: 9:30 pm, April 15th, 2009

porps: yer good move to get rid of otten asap……….his price wont increase much and zaka is going up this week so get him b4 its too late.

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING TRADES SHOULD I DO???

1. LEUENBERGER —-> PETRIE/FRASER/H.MAC (WHICH ONE)
AND: 2. RAINES —-> RANCE (WILL HE KEEP HIS SPOT IN TIGERS)

OR

1. LEUNENBERGER —–> JASON BLAKE
AND: 2. ANTHONY —-> BEAMS

Professor Says: 10:05 pm, April 15th, 2009

Porps - I wouldn’t trade for Zaharakis, as he may be dropped this week. He didn’t have a great game last week & the ins for Essendon could be Mcveigh, Mcphee, Houli, Lonergan & Lovett-Murray.

Professor Says: 10:07 pm, April 15th, 2009

Sorry did you mean Dawson ??

Professor Says: 10:12 pm, April 15th, 2009

Anyone give the pies a chance against Brisbane ?? Considering that Shaw & Maxwell are out. Although Brisbane should win, the pies always play well away from home.
