Super stats: Super Coach NAB Challenge stats released

by m0nty | March 24th, 2009 | Comments : [81] | Categories: Supercoach.
Paul Montgomery

The official Champion Data rankings - a.k.a. Super Coach points - for the 2009 NAB Challenge are out.

The link to the Microsoft Excel file is here. For those of you who haven’t got a way to read Excel files, may I recommend a little site I know of called Google.

These are the highlights for me from a rough perusal:

Richmond Training Session

Concerns about Brent Reilly’s SC credentials should be shelved after his first three scores.

Brisbane’s explosion in DT scores has not necessarily resulted in a similar increase in SC scores across the board.
Daniel Rich is safe as houses as a SC starter.
Lachie Henderson is worth serious consideration as a starter in SC.

Brendan Fevola is an SC specialist.
Chris Johnson is not.
Mitch Robinson looks the best of the Blue kids.

Dayne Beams is another SC specialist (and not bad in DT either).
Ben Reid is not this year’s Nathan J. Brown.

Hayden Skipworth’s outside game doesn’t overly hurt his SC scoring.

Paul Hasleby is a lock.
Greg Broughton is just about starter material on these numbers.
Stephen Hill has a game that is perhaps too outside for full value in SC.

There is no new Harry Taylor in the new crop of Geelong youngsters.

Travis Tuck’s turnover count is not hurting his SC scoring due to the highly inside nature of his possessions.
Brendan Whitecross pales in comparison to Matt Suckling in SC.

None of the Demon rucks are startable.
It’s a huge shame for SC that Jack Grimes got injured.
Kyle Cheney is worth a look.

Liam Anthony is an SC monster.
Jack Ziebell is an SC pussy cat.

The Power midfield share around big SC days like blunts at a hippie party.

Shane Tuck is going to be a keeper smokie, especially if Nathan Foley misses games early.
You won’t be disappointed by Brett Deledio.
Andrew Raines is going to have to rack up 20+ touches a game to be truly worthwhile, but he can do it.

Farren Ray is going to have some solid scores in the Saints backline.
Zac Dawson just doesn’t do enough.

Adam Goodes and Ryan O’Keefe are still very much in the SC premium conversation.

Doesn’t look like a year to have any Eagles in SC.

Shaun Higgins is just as much a lock in SC as DT, perhaps more.

do recent articles and comments now mean i should choose Greg Broughton over suban - which is likely to get more games for freo?

korza Says: 5:41 pm, March 24th, 2009

WOW… Thanks Monty,great break down.

PS: I’m still waitng for my prayer….

jayz Says: 5:41 pm, March 24th, 2009

and i have to pick one of ziebell and anthony for dt

hairy Says: 5:48 pm, March 24th, 2009

you give away all the juicy secrets i hate this web site i do the research by watching the games then this comes out and you go and tell every one who to pick. your taking all the skill of super coach out of it and letting the people that have never played a game of footy get all the inside info.

Dazz Says: 5:50 pm, March 24th, 2009

also interested in broughton. has he been prooted to the senior list? and out of him, petrenko and dawson which 2 should i have as my emergencies?

peter.g Says: 5:52 pm, March 24th, 2009

how do you think people find this website hairy? by doing research, its how i found it.

james Says: 5:54 pm, March 24th, 2009

Dazz i think dawson is probably the one to leave out, i am but others will probably differ

L.MAC Says: 6:04 pm, March 24th, 2009

Must have missed something why will Foley miss games early???

Other Dan Says: 6:05 pm, March 24th, 2009

WOW MONTY! You are my hero. I was lamenting yesterday the lack of SC stats. Thank you so much.

hairy - It’s just going to get worse, your competitors are getting better and more informed. Just think of the extra satisfaction of actually winning these tougher competitions.

Dan Says: 6:07 pm, March 24th, 2009

Here you go korza:

Our DT Father, which art in DT Heaven
Hallowed be thy Team Name
Thy DT kingdom come
Thy team will be done [by lockout], in earth as it is in DT heaven
Give us this day our daily points
And forgive us our sleding, as we forgive them that sledge against us
And lead us not into trading temptation
But deliver us from Laidley’s evil
For thine is the DT kingdom, and the DT power, and the DT glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Ash Says: 6:23 pm, March 24th, 2009

These stats came out a few days ago on superfooty. Broughton over Suban. Ziebell or Anthony. I wish Laidley would play them both all season.

korza Says: 6:28 pm, March 24th, 2009

DAN..God bless you my father, for you have given me your blessing.May stones rain on Laidleys head if he is to sin.AMEN

Jesse Says: 6:31 pm, March 24th, 2009

Whats the deal with tippet and stevens from adelaide. both fairly cheap and averaged over 100 for the pre season. will they be good?

steve Says: 6:36 pm, March 24th, 2009

No Eagles hey Monty !! M.Brown Kerr Cox just to name a few !!!!! please explain ??

Shane Tuck Says: 6:39 pm, March 24th, 2009

I’ll be useless this year. Don’t get me!

Hendo Says: 6:47 pm, March 24th, 2009

This is brilliant Monty
Will help a lot over the next 2 days when making my final changes
Disappointed by Cloke and Thomas’ scores

Tonche Says: 6:56 pm, March 24th, 2009

How good is Wells with no tag?

hairy Says: 6:57 pm, March 24th, 2009

it just gives the nerds a to good head start i think. i also think monty sends some of them down the wrong track which is a bonus also.

bluebaggas Says: 7:23 pm, March 24th, 2009

adelaide obviously versed some pretty crap teams in thier nab challenge matches

The Real Simon Says: 7:44 pm, March 24th, 2009

There’s still so much more to doing well in DT/SC that just knowing the stats.

Judd and Coxy Says: 7:53 pm, March 24th, 2009

We’ve had really bad preseasons. Not worth the cash:)

james Says: 8:20 pm, March 24th, 2009

monty andrew raines only played a half in round 3 ….. he’s raring to go trust me.

CC Says: 8:43 pm, March 24th, 2009

Very unimpressed with Veszpremi

jayz Says: 9:10 pm, March 24th, 2009

out of N Krakouer, C yarran, W Thompson and T Walker who should i remove to upgrade to a mid priced forward? am open to any suggestion.

bluebaggas Says: 9:19 pm, March 24th, 2009

yarran needs a few weeks in the VFL before he will even get 1 AFL game
not sure if thompson is even off the rookie list yet
so id go yarran then thompson

fryzie Says: 9:20 pm, March 24th, 2009

CC - probably a good thing, he’s injured.

jayz - Thompson hasn’t even been elevated off the rookie list has he?

jayz Says: 9:22 pm, March 24th, 2009

good thing i asked then

Taylor W. Says: 9:24 pm, March 24th, 2009

I’m your man JayZ

Josh Says: 9:28 pm, March 24th, 2009

What do you mean by, Ben reid will not be this years Nathan brown? as in he will not get a game orr he will score better/worse?

Ads Says: 9:47 pm, March 24th, 2009

LOL @ Shane Tuck

Nathan Says: 9:53 pm, March 24th, 2009

I love you m0nty.

Cam Says: 10:07 pm, March 24th, 2009

@hairy - this is why DT and supercoach will die a slow death soon and the fantasy games like Ultimate Footy will rise and become the mainstream. It’s makes so much more sense (a a whole lot more fun) having a proper draft.

DT and SC are almost a game of luck these days. Not much skill to it with all the free information like this out there. I guarantee most people wouldn’t know what any of these rookies looked like.

Bomber Says: 10:12 pm, March 24th, 2009

Anyone else noticed the form of Nathan Krakouer in the pre-season? Avg 95 over four pre-season games is pretty good. Especially considering he’s $217k!

Anyone else picking him up?

Simonoz Says: 10:13 pm, March 24th, 2009

Looking for info on two players -

* Wade Thompson playing very well, but still not elevated into that one vacant spot at Port? Why not…..

* Suckling, Hawks…..elevated, played well….has he passed Whitecross ?

Tks

Nick Says: 10:37 pm, March 24th, 2009

Thompson hasnt been upgraded yet because he prob wont play, I think port will stick with Gray for a little bit.

Simonoz Says: 10:39 pm, March 24th, 2009

One last bit - Mitch Robinson is starting to bother me…..only played 1 3/4 games in NAB, he’s been talked up a storm so theres a lot of smoke….but where is the fire?

Beams - played much better in NAB, yet maybe no room at the Inn at Collingwood yet.

Which one do you put on the bench ?

Simonoz Says: 10:39 pm, March 24th, 2009

Tks Nick…..even if it wasn’t what I wanted to hear :)

m0nty Says: 10:54 pm, March 24th, 2009

steve: Good point, Cox and Brown are solid.

jkvel1 Says: 10:57 pm, March 24th, 2009

Is anyone else worried about dean cox’s fitness after having played in total less than 4 quarters in the entire preseason…

Dean Cox Says: 11:25 pm, March 24th, 2009

Dont worry about me champ, im doing fine

MiGZ Says: 12:28 am, March 25th, 2009

is it just me, or does shane tuck look like he has a hint of chimpanzee in him…in that picture.

jazz Says: 2:38 am, March 25th, 2009

i would have thought dal santo would get better sc numbers, considering his dt numbers were good.

John Says: 3:50 am, March 25th, 2009

Monty do you have the stats for D.T. for all the players

Disco (UK) Says: 7:35 am, March 25th, 2009

MiGZ - ahahaha, hilarious!!!

John - that info is in the Fantasy Freako email, you can find it on the DT Talk website.

hamish Says: 9:03 am, March 25th, 2009

i wouldnt start shaun higgins, hes a late withdrawal with a niggling corked calf, rocket said he wasnt willing to risk him

hamish Says: 9:04 am, March 25th, 2009

hel definetely play round 3, should get up for round 2 id say though

Jack Says: 9:14 am, March 25th, 2009

Start talking Hamish. 200,000 sc’ers want to know where you heard this

Magoo Says: 9:31 am, March 25th, 2009

Ahhh - this will be so boring now that HS has pretty much just given away all the smokies for SC. It has ruined the game for me. What has been the point of buying their paper everyday for the last 3 months and reading every bloody crap article on the likes of that dynamo Jake Spencer if the morons at the HS will just give the info away - all in one convieniant place for the johnny come latleys who have no idea but will pick a very similar side to us.

God this sucks. (these sites are alright as there are not that many noobs coming on here - COS THEY CANT BE BOTHERED DOING THEIR OWN BLOODY RESEARCH)

Magoo Says: 9:33 am, March 25th, 2009

Bit of a rant - sorry guys but you get where im coming from yeah?

fryzie Says: 10:04 am, March 25th, 2009

I don’t get these people who are bitching about these stats being available to the public… yes some of us devote more time and research watching games to find out who to get, but the fact remains that such research will make those of us who did the hard yards pick the RIGHT performers, not just anyone who averaged over 100 in the preseason.

Anyone here going to get Tippett as their number one ruck? Not likely, but based on these stats a lot of newbies might even downgrade Cox for him, seeing as Cox averaged 75 points less and costs over twice as much.

These stats are a little innacurate for certain players and it’s for those of us with some football knowledge to weed out the duds who overperformed in the NAB.

In saying that Tippett will probably average 100 for the season, get on him. ;)

Ash Says: 10:05 am, March 25th, 2009

Magoo,
I totally agree. The Herald have taken the fun outta this game and all u need to do is read one article 2 days before the season starts and u have a good team. I know it makes it more competitive but takes ALL the skill and research outta it.

fryzie Says: 10:06 am, March 25th, 2009

I would suggest also that Hamish is full of shit. Remember about this time last year a rumour of a late withdrawl for Nick Stevens floated around?

Put Higgins on the ground, he is the bargain of the year but same as every other week - ensure you have a good emergency named in case there is a late withdrawl from anybody.

Magoo Says: 10:26 am, March 25th, 2009

Thanks Ash - im glad im not the only one who thinks this way.

Simonoz Says: 10:36 am, March 25th, 2009

Ash & Magoo…..you have to finally realize that its 2009, and not 1989 guys.

This is the way of the world - and its only going to get bigger & bigger - INFORMATION at your fingertips - whenever you want it, wherever you are.

Just like you use the internet now for so many things you didnt say 5 yrs ago - but your not complaining about that ?

As with a watching a game, reading afl stories or trolling these websites - it doesnt really matter WHERE the info comes from….its what you do with it.

And if as you say you’ve got an indepth knowledge BEFORE the info is generally released, then your in a much better position to use it correctly, as opposed to the dufus who registered for SC 3 days ago.

I’d nearly gamble….that in all the info you’ve read on sites like this or the HS….just like these dufus’s 48 hrs ago…you’ve gleamed a piece of information you didnt have from all your research and are now using it for the 09 SC season.

Not an anti-rant….just some clarification on the electronic media world.

ya mum Says: 10:41 am, March 25th, 2009

Monty this is great but are u doin one for DT aswell?

peek Says: 11:12 am, March 25th, 2009

TTuck or Haselby? Any thoughts…

hamish Says: 11:20 am, March 25th, 2009

hasleby has been averaging high 80’s, where as tuck has a strong hawks midfield to contend with to get a touch

Disco (UK) Says: 11:40 am, March 25th, 2009

L.Henderson monty, really?!

Simonoz Says: 11:58 am, March 25th, 2009

Disco - Henderson / Frawley / Geary…all roughly same price, all starters…thoughts ?

korza Says: 12:06 pm, March 25th, 2009

Oh thy mighty God, forgive me for my preseason sins. With just 1 more sleepless night,i ask for your forgiveness.I know that you can be merciful at a time of need. Please guide me in the right directon and away from devil and his greed.

Just 1 more sin,let Laidley not be in heaven or in hell, but in limbo and nowhere to go.

Junkyard do the right thing and play that kid.

Disco Says: 12:54 pm, March 25th, 2009

I agree with your thinking Magoo but must remind you that nearly every person who has the done the research will have the same or nearly the same rookies as well. The difference is is in the mid and premiums and having an idea who might take the step up.

Magoo Says: 1:13 pm, March 25th, 2009

Hey Disco - dont care if those who have done the research have similar teams - but not these knuckleheads who get everything laid out for them the day before lockout.
What is the point of doing your own reserch?

Its just too easy to coast along until the day before lockout - all im saying.

Disco Says: 1:33 pm, March 25th, 2009

Fair enough Magoo. It is frustrating. I still reckon the guys who’ve done their research on everything will still have the upper hand in the long run.

Heater Says: 2:22 pm, March 25th, 2009

I agree, Disco. The research I did last year enabled me to win my league and finish in the top 1800. Lets hope this years research gets me higher on the list….:)

In regards to others, some the SC coaches in one of my leagues here at work have absolutely no idea even when they are constantly on fanfooty.com. I mean one bloke has Matt Egan in his backline FFS!!!

So I guess you can be on fanfooty.com but not have the capacity to use the info….

Ash Says: 2:27 pm, March 25th, 2009

Yeah i agree with u disco, the research i have done has seen me go from top 50,000 to top 20,000 to top 800. I just dont like seeing people get an easy ride. But the main diff is picking ur mid price players and also ur premium players. Especially this year with there being a lack of rookies that may play consistently from round 1. Oh well may the best man win.

Muppet Executioner Says: 2:30 pm, March 25th, 2009

SC SC SC –

I’ve just got this sub $100K need for a bench back (or 2) - I’ve got Rance and Perenko there but I guess with the delayed announcements of squads thru R1, we’re all in the boat?

Brad Says: 2:49 pm, March 25th, 2009

@ Magoo,

Agree with you 100% mate.
Once the season gets well under way, no doubt those of us who have put in the effort will make the correct moves at the trade table which will ultimately separate the good sides from the bad come finals time but it has defintiely taken the fun out of it for me in the early rounds for sure.
I have spent the day in the office spewing up because people in my s/c league have put their teams together last night after i spent 3 months doing the hard research and the sides are very similar as far as the rookies are concerned, premiums will average close to the same anyway. But now those people who would have noramlly taken Zeilbell over Beams or Anthony for example will drop him for one of the latter becuase they now know he is not fantasy player at this stage.
This is where we should have the advantage IMO.

Jazzman Says: 3:44 pm, March 25th, 2009

Sure, the NAB comp gives us at least some idea how some players are fairing but it is hardly gospel when it comes to the season proper. We’ve got a whole season of ups and downs to endure - let’s not get out knickers in a knot before it even starts. There’ll be injuries, form spikes and slumps, coach’s bizarre selection policies, player indiscretions (on and off the field), attacking/defensive strategies, differing rule interpretation by umpires, etc, etc, etc. There’ll be plenty of variables to consider and agonise over that will cloud the waters that seem so crystaline at this end of the season. Take a breath and be comforted that your experience and research will stand you in good stead when the inevitable waves come rolling in.

Disco Says: 4:30 pm, March 25th, 2009

Eloquently put Jazzman

jayz Says: 4:32 pm, March 25th, 2009

which young crow will be the best value in dt this year? have got walker and petrenko in my side at the mo but have cash left over if other options are possible

lloydy Says: 4:52 pm, March 25th, 2009

hey guys
can someone pick my team for me this year coz i really have no idea??

Brad Says: 5:14 pm, March 25th, 2009

@Jazzman “standing ovation”.
Collected my thoughts and settled down now.

Disco (UK) Says: 7:58 pm, March 25th, 2009

Magoo - face the facts mate, its how it is and the only thing you can do about it is be a better coach.

Lets see how the minions go with strategy, trading and break-evens, etc. Said muppets will burn their trades by R16 and will start Ablett in SC, anyway…

Browndog Says: 8:21 pm, March 25th, 2009

Cam Says: 10:07 pm, March 24th, 2009

@hairy - this is why DT and supercoach will die a slow death soon and the fantasy games like Ultimate Footy will rise and become the mainstream. It’s makes so much more sense (a a whole lot more fun) having a proper draft.

YOU ARE A NOB CAM! GET YA HAND OFF IT MATE

Disco Says: 8:25 pm, March 25th, 2009

Thanks Sticks, I was wanting to put in Bruce Duperusal but i wasn’t sure how to spell his name. Sorry, you were my second choice.

Brady Says: 9:15 pm, March 25th, 2009

Hey guys,
i had adam cooney but have seen dalziell and wondering if i should take the risk and get the cash, as cooney has been injured and dalziell has been posting some pretty impressive scores.

thoughts?
thanks guys

Simonoz Says: 9:15 pm, March 25th, 2009

Magoo - Disco….you have to ask yourselves why DT (afl) and SC (HS) exist in the first place?

It has nothing to do with the fans enjoyment…they didnt sit around trying to reinvent the crossword so that us the fans had something fun to do.

Its all about the cash - always will be. And with moola$ comes every tom, dick & harry website spewing forth info, all trying to get a piece of the pie.

Over here in the states, Fantasy Football is a 50 Billion Dollars a year business…from websites to tv shows to magazines to weekly newspapers…you name it - the info comes at you from all sides.

Back home in Melbourne, its only going to get bigger & bigger…with even more information from all sources - especially just before the season starts, just to wring the crap out of the chicken and make sure they get the most ‘views’ = dollars.

But as with anything going back 100’s of years - what you do with this info seperates you from the pack…so take your months of research and shove it down the throat of the newbies once the season is underway - just be warned - next year, the newbies are going to start early too LOL

The Coaches Box - AFL Fantasy Footy Podcast | #59: Pre-lockout 2009 Says: 1:00 am, March 26th, 2009

[...] We start by discussing possibly the most egregious example of the embracing by the media of fantasy secret-telling: the Herald-Sun Super Coach pre-season guide. After we whinge about that for a while, it’s time to talk about another Hun document: the NAB Challenge Super Coach points. [...]

Disco Says: 8:34 am, March 26th, 2009

Agree SimonOz. And lets also remember that only a company who could make money from this would put this much time and effort into its developmnet and offer this much prizemoney. I’m not saying I like what the HS has done recently to try and get sales up, but its a fact of the matter that we need someone like the HS to create the FF comps. The reason that the Supercoach and Dreamteam are so popular is that because they offer big prizes and to get their money back they need to sell adds and papers. Got to take the good with the bad even though it sucks.
