The 2009 AFL Prospectus has already hit the hands of fantasy coaches with price and player position info.
As the hardcore fantasy coaches already know, the first look we get at the player prices and positions in both AFL Dream Team and Super Coach is the AFL Prospectus, published in late January by Champion Data. Details are now out about the 2009 issue, and here are the main points:
• Magic number increases to around 4438, a 2.2% increase. We already knew the salary cap would increase by 3.5%, making this the first year for a while that the game has become easier.
• The previous 42% rule for discounting players who miss an entire season due to long-term injury has been discarded in favour of the rule of arbitrary discounts of 10%, 20%, 30% or 40% which have been doled out to selected players who managed between 1 and 8 games. This means Ben Cousins only gets a 10% discount on his 2007 averages, while Paul Hasleby gets a 30% discount, and Hayden Skipworth gets no discount at all on his 2006 averages.
• Mark Coughlan at $176,400 in DT uses a new rule which is based on a 10% discount of his 2008 price. Trent Hentschel, the other player who has missed two years in a row, is at $122,700 using a different equation.
• Price premiums for top draft picks have been extended from the previous rule of the top 10 to now the full first round of 16. This pushes up the prices of the top 10 by a further $20,000 on what they would have been last year, meaning DT prices of $150,600 for Jack Watts and $146,600 for Nick Naitanui.
• The previous rule about maintaining a “minimum” price for older players whose average after discounts would have been placed below draftee prices - which was significantly above draftee prices - has been abandoned, meaning that players like Scott Gumbleton, Mitch Thorp and Mitchell Brown of West Coast are now at draftee prices of $86,600/$94,200.
• Important player positional moves: Brent Harvey returns to the forwards, joining Simon Goodwin, Shaun Higgins, Andrew Walker, Steele Sidebottom and Skipworth; Corey Enright, Andrew Carrazzo and Jason Davenport are now backs while Jed Adcock returns to the backline as well.
• Important player positional non-moves: Brett Deledio stays a forward, Chad Cornes remains a back.
• Jack Grimes does not get a discount, and neither do Higgins, Beau Waters, Shannon Hurn, Ben Reid, Lachie Henderson, Patrick Dangerfield or Jared Rivers.
• Jesse W. Smith gets a 20% discount, as do Sam Butler, Patrick Veszpremi, Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Raines.
The first thing that strikes me is that it seems crazy that Gumby is $62,000 cheaper than Watts in DT. The second is that I already thought we had more value picks at the lower end of the forwards than we could handle, and now we have got some more bonuses in Sidebottom and Skipworth, not to mention the mystifying classification of Walker. Davenport is going to be another teaser in the backs.

Davenport is a surpise to me as I thought he was monty for the centre (forgive the pun!!) but it might work in ok for my side. Happy about Deledio being a forward as I want him in my side but just not in the centre. Cousin’s new price will make fantasy coaches think twice…..
Firstly, great stuff Monty. Updated it very quickly, well done. Cousins @ $364k is too much for me, I’m gonna start Rich on the field and use the cash elsewhere. Lids and Chad not moving posistions is great. Smith and Raines now fit perfectly as my 6th/7th back. Adcock in the backs is great aswell. It’s made it easier which is good and bad. IMO, the best thing out of today is Lids as a FWD.
Also, I’ll be taking Cousins in SC. Much better priced @ $337k.

Cousin’s price is utterly ridiculous. They up’ed his price on reputation alone, no one will select him now. The AFL didnt want him to return to an AFL team, it must have spread to DT too.

great to see deledio staying as a forward and also having the option of picking up harvey there as well. i did have riewoldt and pav but i might swap them 2 of the 2 midfielders. what do u guys think about that?

and the rookies where expensive enough as they now they are even more expensive? :O

I believe they usually tweak one or two discounts, dylan, but the vast majority should be ridgey didge.
Dylan, I’d keep Pav get rid of Riewoldt as he is a slow starter and could drop in price. Then you could get him when he is cheaper.

Well, dissapointed i didnt receive my prospectus today but probably lucky since still reading 2008 almanac and Sheeds auto bio. Glad Cuz is priced out of temptation, like Davenport and Skips positional data, carrots may be tempting but CJ may make him an utter waste of DOH. Lids will be popular, and the tempatation to start 4-5 rookies on the field is building. Realistic IMO Premiums/Rookies structure very very tempting.

well cousins is outta my team, but it stays the same apart from that, have to play one more rookie up fwd now also.
just wondering, how many ” money trades” did any of u guys make last year. i did quite a few in the latter half of the season, trading off improved rookies to the cheapest players available, attempting to gain 50k so i could upgrade some players to premiums. It proved to be a big mistake, showing my little experience for dream teaming.
That’s not a mistake, dud, that’s one of the most important tactics in DT. When you say “cheapest players available” do you mean 72k guys or rookies that actually played??? That’s the key, you have to wait for a good cheapie/rook to come along before you cash in - you still some bench backup.
the 72k guys in my case. thats where i went wrong. i see it as a mistake because it left me with very little trades come finals time.
i kinda did that, but in my initial team, i have over 900k spare in the bank, so after round 9 or about when jb had fully dropped and hill was cheapest, i dropped 1 for 1 trades every week all the way to the finals.
however last year was very much focused on winning my league, this year its most def all about nat ranking, so that strat is out the window i think
what you guys think about leaving money aside at the start to play with later on in the season, basically at the expense of not using an extra 3-4 trades?
Ryz, I reckon leaving money as spare cash is a great idea provided you get cheap players to perform for you. If they don’t then trading sooner rather than later is the only option.
I had about $80k in the bank at the start of last season. In Round 3-4 Dan Pearce was not performaning & Schniider was struggling so I traded them for Ablett and Wellingham and used the spare cash to help for getting Gazza. Wellingham was a great cash cow who helped me get Bartel in about Round 12-13.
By the finals I had 4 trades left. I was a little lucky with injuries but by the time I got to the GF in my leaugue I was able to get Rievoldt which helped me win my league.
yeah, its very situational hey. i tended not to go for many rookies, but alot of cheap/mid priced 2-4th yearers who could go up just just even a little bit, it meant once i made money off them and they started slowing down theyre increases, bring in corey bartel kornes etc.
what are the implications however on getting your rankings up though?

It’s all about the national ranking… putting yourself against all dream teamers, not just a few. The league is always just a pot luck draw in the prelim and final… always comes down to late withdrawals and lucky big scores…
eg. 2008 pav, mackie, ROK withdrawal. richo, chappy underscoring, and guys like burgoyne getting 150. mostly luck.

yeah, my mates love their dt though, so its always big. and by implications i mean like, if i was to leave money in the bank and not get the best possibly side i could afford, and slowly build it up to a team of guns, will it still leave me with too much of a handicap at the beginning of the season when im scoring 1500?
although noticed the convicts were only dropping 1650 ’s first few rounds?
I have now changed Trent Hentschel’s price to be in line with the Coughlan rule, which makes it $151,200 in DT and $232,200 in SC.
IMO, Ryz, go for the very best side you can right from the start. I would have thought it would be better to be up with the leaders from the start rather than catching up ground later in the year.
National ranking does not concern me; I’m after winning my league and collectind the 15 slabs!!!!!
lol 15 slabs? haha thats alot of work to be done there! yeah its just good mid season watching everyone complaining how the back line sucks, they have 8 trades left at round 10 and theyre teams aint getting any better. this way you get to scope out and pick up almost every good player as they bottom out cause you dont have them yet.

its mentiond in the prospectus monty that hodge wil be classed as a bak for the 2009 competition but for some reason they have not pikd him in any of the 6 model teams
i find it inconsistent how some players have been given discounts and others haven’t.
why haven’t players like jack grimes,shaun higgins, shannon hurn and jared rivers been given discounts?
also i think all the draftees should be priced the same. all national and pre season draft picks at $94,200 and all rookies at $83,200.

I tweak the Guru projections every so often. This time it was due to getting more accurate Champion Data player classifications.

In SC, it’s hard to tell with GAJ. The Champion scorers love him so much. He’s liable to explode with a 175 early and then you’ll never be able to afford him.
If you were not to take GAJr from Rd1 and hope to trade him in later (obviously cheaper) how and when would you plan to go about it?
If he was to maintain his current price and ave what lengths would you go to to get him?
