Following on from the team trends post earlier this week, and echoing a successful post from February about a 2008 Super Coach team structure, I thought it might be helpful to give an overview of how a fair few of the Fanplanner plan teams are being structured in terms of the distribution of premiums, mid-price players and rookies.
Looking back at that earlier post, it was possible to buy a gun top-100 team from the players I listed there, though I did miss a few fantasy stars like Bock, Porplyzia, Hill, Wheatley and Vince. I’m sure this won’t be the first time I do this feature before the start of next season, but let’s see how good you can make your team look by choosing from the following player groups who are the most popular in plan teams.
BACKS
3 premiums from: Brendon Goddard, Chad Cornes, Luke Hodge, Sam Fisher, Grant Birchall, Chris Newman, Corey Enright, Josh Drummond, Andrew Mackie, Heath Shaw
3 mid-prices from: Ricky Petterd, Xavier Ellis, Nick Malceski, Andrew Raines, Beau Waters, Simon Buckley, Shannon Hurn
3 rookies from: Jack Grimes, Alex Rance, Matthew Egan, Nick Suban, Jordan Lisle, Jesse W. Smith, Levi Greenwood, Michael Hurley
CENTRES
2 premiums from: Kane Cornes, Jimmy Bartel, Gary Ablett jnr, Chris Judd, Joel Selwood, Jordan Lewis, Travis Boak, Shane Tuck, Dane Swan, Daniel Kerr
3 mid-prices from: Paul Hasleby, Ben Cousins, Bryce Gibbs, Jed Adcock, Brent Reilly, Trent Cotchin
3 rookies from: Daniel Rich, Mark Coughlan, Patrick Dangerfield, Steele Sidebottom, Jack Ziebell
RUCKS
1 premium: Dean Cox
1 mid-price from: Hamish McIntosh, Robert Warnock, Brad Ottens
2 rookies from: Nick Naitanui, Tyrone Vickery, Joel Tippett, Shaun McKernan, Daniel Currie, Ayce Cordy
FORWARDS
2 premiums from: Matthew Pavlich, Lance Franklin, Steve Johnson, Nick Riewoldt, Jonathan Brown, Daniel Giansiracusa, Ryan O’Keefe, Nathan G. Brown, Adam Goodes
3 mid-prices from: Scott Lucas, Shaun Higgins, Jason Porplyzia, Patrick Veszpremi, Des Headland, Alwyn Davey, Angus Monfries
4 rookies from: Jack Watts, Chris Yarran, Taylor Walker, Jarrad Grant, Sean Rusling, Scott Gumbleton, Trent Hentschel
I don’t agree with all of those. I think the #2 ruck premium is a more wide open field than that, for instance. Since I added Ben Cousins yesterday after a suggestion from BigFooty, he has shot up the charts in the starting midfielder slots to be #6 on the list, a ranking which I don’t like since I have big queries over his long-term fitness and thus his keeper status. I still don’t like the mix of talls and small in the forward rookie list - I think over time you’ll probably see a lot more discussion of shorter Rioli/Gamble/Porplyzia types like Michael Walters, Hayden Ballantyne, Neville Jetta and Tom Rockliff.
As for names that I think should be there, perhaps that’s for another blog post. Maybe you lot can suggest some in the comments?

Great write up, interesting read. I think Cousins is the kind of player you can take that unnecessary risk on. If his fitness holds up (I can’t see why it wouldn’t, he is traditionally a very hard trainer from what I hear) he could prove a cheapish gun, and even if he breaks down he should make a quick 100k before doing so.
I disagree with your suggestion that Kerr is a premium, I don’t think he’ll ever break through to that higher scoring echelon, he does too much in and under stuff to get the cheap kicks, a la Sammy Mitchell.
Hopefully another small forward will make themselves known in the next few months, I agree that it is looking kinda bleak.
On the rucks, I think Paul Johnson deserves a mention more than Warnock (I take it Warnock has proven popular thus far?). I believe Tippett has been delisted as well.
Again, great right up.
monty, do you think it is worth it to select players like Nick Malceski and Scott Lucas knowing they had injury plagued 2008 seasons. We all know they are terrific players but will they be value for money?
I’m more bullish on Eski than Lucas, Dud. Both of them need to be watched in the NAB to see how good of a pre-season they manage. I’m considering Eski for SC and that’s about it.
“like Michael Walters, Hayden Ballantyne, Neville Jetta and Tom Rockliff.”
Yeah Rockliff could be a good option if he goes to the right team, he’s got an AFL-ready body.
How is Boak a premium and Gibbs not?
Hartlett should be in the mid rookies and Trengrove in the backs.
2 positional questions: Have ChampData already got Goodes as a Forward?
and how do you rate Sidebottom’s chances of being listed in two positions?
Also monty, just on the fanplanner, have you been told all the prices will go up again this year? if so, what’s the new magic number?
And are you not expecting Andrew Walker to get a low discount?
lol also, whos mock draft did you use to predict the rookies’ teams? yours?
I’ll stop posting now
I used the BigFooty Mock Draft. It’s not perfect, but no mock draft is. I used their draft reports for positional data.
I have not been told anything on the Fanplanner, I’ve just made educated guesses based on previous years. Walker is unlikely to be discounted as he played 7 games this year and no player who played more than 6 in 2007 got a discount for 2008.
Actually Monty, it is possible that Walker could be discounted (and Dalziell for that matter). One of the trends in the discounts was that players who played between 2-6 games and averaged over 65 recieved a discount. The thing is, there were no players who played 7 games and averaged over 65 so we can’t really tell for sure what will happen with Walker and Dalziell.
This is true, Dazza. Dalziell in particular is a big outlier.
Good write up monty. Quick question, when does the afl prospectus usually come out?
hey monty, you reckon raines will snare a discount?
only played the two games all year
Dunno on the Prospectus. Raines might be a year or two too old to get a discount… unknown.
prospectus is usually available online in early-mid january. thats when i ordered mine this year.
why is drummond a premium back in this list monty?
browns13, check out his 2007 scores here:
http://www.fanfooty.com.au/players/year.php?firstname=Josh&surname=Drummond&year=2007
Some absolutely massive scores there, but it depends how you classify ‘premium’. Perhaps the fact that he hasn’t gone on with it might suggest that he is just an occasional high scorer, rather than an must-have upgrade target.
Certainly wasn’t a premium this year :@
monty when will the early 2009 SC structure be posted
