Symes out: back pain persists

by m0nty | May 2nd, 2008 | Comments : [21] | Categories: AFL Dream Team, Lethal League, Other Competitions, Selection, Super Coach.

It was rumoured earlier in the week that Brad Symes was having difficulties recovering from the knock to the ankle he picked up in the Blues game and it has now come to pass that he is officially out. It sounds very much like just a swelling issue to me, so it’s not going to prevent him playing next week barring further injury. However, it leaves fantasy coaches in even more of a pickle than they were before with the Chad Cornes/Joel Bowden situation, as well as temporary outages for Dustin Fletcher, Bret Thornton and Shannon Hurn, along with rookie favourites Darren Pfeiffer and Adam Hartlett also not appearing in round 7.

Symes’ breakeven is at about his rolling average this week due to the low round 6 score caused by the original injury, so it’s going to be tempting to trade him to cover short-term holes. However, for many coaches this will mean that other positions in their backline will continue to fester, such as Xavier Ellis who appears to have hit a wall, Nathan Lovett-Murray who is going backwards, and underperforming Eagles like Beau Waters, Brett Jones and Mark Nicoski.

If you can at all help it, I would recommend not trading Symes. He delivered two excellent scores in rounds 4 and 5, and his role is still one which will garner a lot of points in future. If that means eating a zero this week to save a trade, so be it. There will be plenty of other coaches who will be in the same boat this week.

Am I the only one clinging to the faint hope that Pfeiffer will be a late replacement tonight……. Anyone know if he travelled to Perth?

Otherwise its a nice big fat zero for me. First one for the year though so cant complain too much, especially when I consider what other people have been through……..

would be a smart move to trade (16trades left) chad cornes for ibboston for the 2-3 matches he’s out, so i can get some sweet $$ then trade back??

m0nty Says: 3:14 pm, May 2nd, 2008

Both Pfeiffer and Hampson traveled, Donny.

ToddyH, if you’re just doing that for cash then it’s not worth it. Trading Cornes out and in again is a noob move.

ToddyH that seems like a risky move, i mean ibbo has only got one 99, i agree with u trading chad, i mean u have 16 trades left, but maybe for someone more expensive, say a goddard, and then wehn chad gets back, u can assess the form of ya defenders and upgrade the worst one, or something like that

Hey Monty,
I think its time for you to drop Ellis. That way he will star and I will get lots of points! ;-) Molly

Bertie Says: 4:01 pm, May 2nd, 2008

Chad, Thornton, Hurn, Johnstone & now Symes all out of my starting 22 from last week! Anyone else got holes like this?

jdog Says: 4:04 pm, May 2nd, 2008

back line is a shambles this year, injuries each week, players getting dropped, laidley not playing hansen.
i got rid of hayden and got ibbo, and upgraded thornton to pete burgoyne.
toddyh i wouldnt trade cornes yet. he will probly be back after the dreamteam game in a few weeks. better off getting a bench player to replace him. eg, myers

CC Says: 4:35 pm, May 2nd, 2008

first 0 of the year. Goodbye 49th overall ranking.

mitch Says: 4:51 pm, May 2nd, 2008

hi everyone

i would like some advice on whether i should trade kerr or keep him on bench for 3 weeks and play bird

nooka Says: 5:01 pm, May 2nd, 2008

Mitch,
Trade Kerr, his 2008 is not going to be that good, with no judd and cousins, he will get the number one tagger every wk, and i dont think he can cope yet

mitch Says: 5:14 pm, May 2nd, 2008

thanx nooka should i trade for ibbotson

Shigella Says: 5:50 pm, May 2nd, 2008

17 trades left. Am thinking Cornes to Kennelly (SC), however, Tadgh can be a bit unreliable in terms of injury.
Other options McLeod, King, Milburn, Gilbee.
Keep in mind I have Xavier Ellis starting also and $100 000.
Thoughts?
Back reserves: Proud, NJ Brown (Nicoski start)

dazza Says: 5:57 pm, May 2nd, 2008

any update on whether pfeiffer will be a late replacement? i’m either trading him or symes. who is the better option myers or ibbo?

m0nty Says: 6:14 pm, May 2nd, 2008

We won’t know until about 8pm Eastern time, dazza.

Donny Says: 8:14 pm, May 2nd, 2008

No Pfeiffer……

Richard Says: 8:15 pm, May 2nd, 2008

I had ellis but traded him for Osbourne because had some extra cash. Even though more exspensive than ellis, he seems a bargain at around 300,000 with an average around the 90s.

Richard Says: 8:17 pm, May 2nd, 2008

Ibbosition is also a good bargain as if he has a good week this week he is shore to rise after his impressive 99 last week

Jimmyoats Says: 2:50 pm, May 7th, 2008

WHAT ABOUT WATERS?

what do people think i should do with him?
