Boys On The Bubble: Round 4, 2008

by m0nty | April 11th, 2008 | Comments : [27] | Categories: AFL Dream Team, Boys On The Bubble.

Due to the overwhelming clamour for this feature (i.e. one bloke whinged about it in the comments!), and due to the fact that we didn’t cover it completely in this week’s Coaches Box podcast, I’ve decided to bring it back for the blog.

There are a lot of players on the bubble this week, including a surprisingly large number of rookies. Let’s first deal with all the senior players who missed a game here or there.

The Also-Rans

Robert Copeland, BRL CTR/FWD, $224,600, 68 BE, 47.5 avg
Justin Sherman, BRL CTR, $238,200, 110 BE, 31.5 avg
Brad Fisher, CAR FWD, $343,100, 106 BE, 71.5 avg
Michael Jamison, CAR BAC, $192,800, 103 BE, 18.5 avg
Jordan Russell, CAR CTR, $221,300, 57 BE, 52 avg
Scott Burns, COL CTR, $359,300, 91 BE, 85 avg
Ben Johnson, COL CTR, $320,900, 79 BE, 77 avg
Nathan Lovett-Murray, ESS BAC, $272,600, 47 BE, 75.5 avg
Henry Slattery, ESS CTR, $199,300, 57 BE, 44 avg
Jason Winderlich, ESS CTR, $357,100, 133 BE, 63 avg
David Wojcinski, GEE CTR, $248,900, 74 BE, 53.5 avg
Campbell Brown, HAW BAC, $256,400, 51 BE, 67.5 avg
Luke Hodge, HAW CTR, $412,600, 118 BE, 91 avg
Leigh Brown, KAN FWD, $220,500, 30 BE, 65 avg
Lynden Dunn, MEL FWD, $259,100, 93 BE, 47.5 avg
Colin Sylvia, MEL FWD, $273,900, 81 BE, 59 avg
Troy Chaplin, PTA BAC, $267,700, 91 BE, 52 avg
Kane Johnson, RIC CTR, $350,800, 86 BE, 84.5 avg
Jason Blake, STK BAC, CTR, $235,900, 57 BE, 57.5 avg
Fraser Gehrig, STK FWD, $292,100, 131 BE, 40.5 avg
Luke McPharlin, FRE BAC/FWD, $285,200, 32 BE, 87.5 avg
Chris Tarrant, FRE FWD, $311,500, 156 BE, 35 avg

The only possible value I could see out of that lot is Lovett-Murray and McPharlin, although they have shown inconsistency over their careers. Sherman has been extremely disappointing, and should have been dropped this week instead of Proud. Hodge seems to have dropped out permanently from the list of top 10 fantasy midfielders, due in part to continuing injury concerns and the roles he undertakes.

The Disaster Zone

Harry Taylor, GEE BAC/CTR, $83,500, -69 BE, 65 avg
Ed Barlow, SYD BAC/CTR, $198,600, 27 BE, 59 avg
Darren Pfeiffer, CAR BAC, $83,500, -61 BE, 61 avg

Thousands upon thousands of coaches are in a panic this week with the selection bombshells about Joel Bowden, Albert Proud, Mark Nicoski (although Nico is going to play after Andrew Embley withdrew) and the continued absence of Roo rookies Scott D. Thompson and Lachie Hansen. Many coaches are also sweating on today’s late teams to see if Pfeiffer will make the cut (EDIT: he’s in!). I recommend getting Taylor in place of Hansen or Scott DT, and if you can wait for the final teams to be sure of Pfeiffer’s spot then he’s also a decent pickup. However, I would prefer Scott Selwood over Pfeiffer… he’s the real Scott DT!

If Only

Rhys Palmer, FRE CTR, $99,500, -104 BE, 88.5 avg (Bubble Boy of the Week!)
Clint Bartram, MEL CTR, $108,600, -27 BE, 53 avg
Tim Callan, WBD CTR, $110,200, -61 BE, 70.5 avg
Brad Ebert, WCE CTR, $83,500, -28 BE, 44.5 avg

Those of us who have been cruelled in the backs and haven’t already got Palmer have to watch on wistfully as thousands of other coaches get on his bandwagon, with good reason. The Freo midfield is pants this year without Paul Hasleby and Palmer is the new messiah. They’ll play him until his head gets so bandaged he can’t see. And he’d probably still pick up the odd handball or two.

… Know When To Run

Ryan Gamble, GEE FWD, $83,500, -77 BE, 69 avg
Chris Mayne, FRE FWD, $83,500, -34 BE, 47.5 avg
Lachlan Henderson, BRL FWD, $95,500, 3 BE, 33.5 avg

Attention will most likely be elsewhere this week, unlike last week where Stuart Dew owners were scouring through the forward rookie ranks for a replacement. If you haven’t got Gamble already, it would be a brave move to trade away someone like Kurt Tippett but my feeling is that it would be justified. If you have the capacity to do so, I salute your gumption… and your luck!

Robert Copeland, BRL CTR/FWD, $224,600, 68 BE, 47.5 what does all this mean ?? can anyone help please. new to this caper

Max Power Says: 4:42 pm, April 11th, 2008

It means that Robert Copeland of the Brisbane Lions, who you can have as a centre or a forward, is currently priced at $224,600 in Dreamteam. He needs to score 68 points this week to maintain that value, and is currently averaging 47.5

In other unrelated news, Tayte Pears $83,500 DEF will debut for Essendon tonight. Monfries is out.

Eric Says: 4:47 pm, April 11th, 2008

Thanks Monty …

Was I the whinger ?

m0nty Says: 4:49 pm, April 11th, 2008

You were Eric, and justified!

Un Shaw Says: 5:05 pm, April 11th, 2008

Is S. Selwood likely to continue getting a game? I wasn’t so sure… Was thinking maybe Pfeiffer would be the best choice to replace Nicoski?

browns13 Says: 5:32 pm, April 11th, 2008

in the disaster zone i have nico, proud, j edwards, and L hansen as well as 215000 in the bank. What should I do?

I was thinking edwards for kenelly and trsut nicoski to play but now there are doubts about kenelly so I’m not sure. I can afford to make 2 trades if I have to, I’m also looking at D bradshaw and H taylor as possible replacements. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

rod Says: 5:41 pm, April 11th, 2008

if you read the updates–Nicoski has been promoted to replace embley who has not travelled with
the team. If i were you i ditch hansen for Harry taylor or s selwood and save a trade. Proud will play throughout the year and could end up being one of the best picks as brisbane settle. The lions will take 6-8 rounds to settle

browns13 Says: 5:48 pm, April 11th, 2008

Well apparently ebert is a chance to replace embley as well so nico is not guaranteed to play. And as for picking upt aylor it is a possibility but I am tempted to use the 215 thousand i have to get a good back in so even when proud palys he doesn’t have to be in my 22.

Mick Says: 5:48 pm, April 11th, 2008

Is there any chance myers from essendon will get a game soon, i think i may have to trade him for another rookie so i can fill my team

rod Says: 5:56 pm, April 11th, 2008

i still would hang on to Nico for another week. However if you have 215k, and depending on your trade status–as in how many you have left– you could still trade taylor in for hansen (no point having him) and pick up osborne, roughhead or people at that top end of averages, and still have plenty of it in the bank. That said– if making 2 trades would take you down to say 14 trades at this stage of the season–well i dont know if thats worth it, coz Nico could play…

Ken Says: 5:59 pm, April 11th, 2008

i would’ve thought pfieffer would be the most likely to keep his spot as taylor came in for mackie whos due back next week and scott is risky having played only one game and being in a relatively settled line up compared to carltons line notwithstanding our early revolving door policy!

ace Says: 6:00 pm, April 11th, 2008

Is it worth holding Drummond (BRL) until he is fit again or trade to get a good start to the competition?

browns13 Says: 6:00 pm, April 11th, 2008

nah iv only made 2 trades so far rod. I can upgrade edwards to kenelly and hansen to Harry taylor which emans if nico gets dropped i have an emergency anyway in taylor. Still I have a funny feeling hansen is going to play soon and that taylor can’t keep his spot which would really kill me. Also monty says kenelly is in doubt?

Un Shaw Says: 6:02 pm, April 11th, 2008

Is Harry Taylor likely to be replaced next week by Mackie? Pfeiffer and S. Selwood also uncertainties to keep their spots over the coming weeks…

Also, Mick David Myers isn’t expected to playe until later in the season so hold off for a while.

Duf182 Says: 6:11 pm, April 11th, 2008

If you had the ability to swap Jonathon Brown for Paul Chapman this week would you do it? I have only used 1 trade, i dont have any real injury concerns and Brown will definitely go down in value this week unless he kicks 15. So I really want to do it but it is very difficult to drop one of the best players in the comp, however i think its the right thing to do.

Nick Says: 6:29 pm, April 11th, 2008

Does it really matter if Brown goes down in value if he scores 100 points?

Ken Says: 6:48 pm, April 11th, 2008

i just wrote a massive diatribe on why you shouldnt trade out brown then my computer crashed before it came through. in short, listen to nick.

brown in your team all year what does his price matter? gun for gun is a waste of a trade. cherish your trades, cherish them like little babies sprung from your own loins.

pfieffer, taylor or selwood!!! argggg im sweating on this.

Darcy Says: 6:52 pm, April 11th, 2008

i already have Palmer, Bird and Houli what would you’s think of Callan as a supercoach pick up for Brent Moloney

Max Power Says: 12:35 am, April 12th, 2008

Mick,

David Myers has been named to debut for Bendigo Bombers on Sunday. He has just recovered from a hamstring strain. I would think he’d be unlikely to play in the ones in the first half of the season. But who knows?

Nick Says: 11:32 am, April 14th, 2008

Just to get in there before Rhys Palmer gets shunned by anyone noticing his score this week, he was playing on big Richo on the wing, there was even footage of Richardson gesturing to Palmer, showing him how his head only came up to his chest.

Not that I think anyone would be disappointed with a $99,000 player scoring 40-50, but we do get used to players scoring well.

I watched the Eagles v Sydney (Bye Bye Barry) game but didn’t see Bird much, does anyone have a Palmer-ese excuse for him, anyone know why he wasn’t able to score so well?

Gor Says: 2:13 pm, April 14th, 2008

does a backline of B.Thornton, G.Johncock, B.Waters, X.Ellis, J.Hunt, J.King, and B.Symes sound decent? I’m trying to get a consistent 70-90 score from each back each week (with the occasional 100 ). Is this a good strategy?

I’m going for the same kind of thing in my midfield too: D.Cross, M.Murphy, S.Salopek, N.Stevens, L.Ball, B.McLean.

the eagle Says: 6:28 pm, April 14th, 2008

hey monty or anyone with advise my back like is cornes, burgoyne, johncock, jones, hayden, gram and nicoski and have barry hall in the forward lines was thinking maybe get gamble for all and up grade either hayden or nicoski for shaw or king what are your thoughts?

Tom Says: 8:12 pm, April 14th, 2008

monty, i got 1347 this week
its my highest score
my captain is o’hAilpin as he has lots of room for improvement
any thoughts?

Nick Says: 8:41 pm, April 14th, 2008

tom ur an idiot. plain and simple.

Gor Says: 11:34 am, April 15th, 2008

hey who do you guys think is a better pickup, Brock McLean or Chance Bateman??

Whenever I watch Hawthorn Bateman just runs around taking marks on the wings. McLean is prone to get tagged now (Rawlings got him last game). Will Bateman continue to do what he does even with Lewis and Crawford back in the team?

Hugh Says: 2:46 pm, April 15th, 2008

Maybe Presti will be a better option as captain Tom

Adz Says: 11:48 pm, April 15th, 2008

Boys need some advice. Have 506k in the bank with 16 trades left. Want to trade bowden out but who for? Also, I picked Van Berlo (don’t know why) and want to get either Jed Adcock, Tarkyn L, or clinton young? Cheers
