Talking Points: Round 12A

by dreamteamhero.com.au | June 18th, 2007 | Comments : [32] | Categories: Talking Points.

Please note: there is no ‘Player of the Week’ and ‘Biggest Disappointment’ declarations this week – I’ll do them next week once all eight games have been played. We’re all about equality here at FanFooty!

Points of interest:

Warren Tredrea’s great game against Essendon was either a long time coming or a flash in the pan, depending on who you talk to. Tredrea scored 88, but luckily his previous shocking form meant he only rose 8k, to $194k which means he’s still as cheap as chips. However, his breakeven is just 19 which means significant rises are only a few goals away. Port have the Lions next – is Tredrea a good bet at this price? That’s the hot question of the moment.

Joel Selwood continued his excellent debut season, scoring a career-high 121 against
Brisbane. The wet conditions suited the midfielder, and it’s interesting to note that he now has an identical average to that of Marc Murphy during both their first eight games. Considering all the hype about Murphy last year, Selwood is doing very well and probably not attracting the same fanfare. Owners of Gary Ablett will be pleased – he scored about 50 final-quarter points for a match total of 139, pipping Jimmy Bartel who pulled another hundred out with 129. The news wasn’t so good for other Cats players – Cameron Ling scored 69, Andrew Mackie registered 71, Corey Enright scored just 39, and young gun Kane Tenace had a disappointing 58.

Getting back to Bartel – personally, I think he’s topped out in price right now (which is a dangerous thing to say…) He’s up 11k to $456k, but his breakeven next week is 117. That’s after recent scores of 111 (Port), 150 (Saints), 117 (Crows) and now 129. He’s topped out. Kane Cornes is probably another who’s close to a price plateau; his breakeven is 121.

While those to are at the top of the rollercoaster, several other good midfielders are on their way down-town. Simon Black scored just 53 against the Cats, and is now priced at $312k with a breakeven of 155 – he’ll probably end up about $280k in two weeks. Jordan Lewis scored 67 – his third disappointing week in a row – while Mark Ricciuto scored 39 against the Kangaroos, meaning he slipped 27k. He’s now $267k with a breakeven of 160.

It’s not just midfielders who are feeling the damage. Scott Lucas fell nearly 30k to be $302k, (breakeven: 144) and teammate Matthew Lloyd is down to $288k with a breakeven of 130. Jonathan Brown is now $310k with a breakeven of 126 (he scored 64 against the Cats), and Brendan Fevola’s measly 38 against Hawthorn means he is down to just $237k, with a breakeven of over 118. Oh dear.

One final point: Adam Cooney did well in Daniel Cross’ absence, scoring 103 against the Fremantle midfield. It was Cooney’s second ton in a row – the first time he’s done that since round 10 & 11 two years ago. Could he be about to explode? He’s good value at $323k but has a breakeven of just 13… Discuss.

Power forwards have sucked this year. Personally it’s killed me. The midfield/forward definitely seems the way to go for consistent good scoring. Tredrea - flash in the pan. If he didn’t kick goals this week, he never will.

Noticed Westhoff played well as well. He came into my side for a missing Buddy Franklin.

Tredrea is back. It’s the kind of confidence booster that gets a player like him going. He is only going to get fitter and better through the season.

Peter Says: 4:10 am, June 19th, 2007

Oh and Westoff came in for Franklin for me as well. A nice little emergency score there!

Kynan Says: 4:51 am, June 19th, 2007

Tredders is gone. This was a one off and at he end of the season they’ll sack him. Done his dash!

Sav Says: 6:03 am, June 19th, 2007

Well as 4 W. Tredrea, He does try really hard but Essendon’s the team he luvs to destroy even with a broken leg he would find away to kick 6. Unbelievable how accurate he seems to become 4 the bombers.

ian Says: 6:52 am, June 19th, 2007

i think tredrea is very similar to nathan brown this time last year… obviously it takes some players longer to recover from serious injuries, chris newman is back after the same leg as nathan g.. so i reckon tredrea has potential to rediscover some of that golden form next year, but as for the rest of this year, for dream team get rid of him
- also with westoff, brilliant, is -112 the lowest be ever?

Anthony Says: 7:26 am, June 19th, 2007

I was tossing up between trading NAblett for Westoff or Varcoe for Boak. I opted for the Varcoe/Boak option, spewing now.

Tredrea, is gone, he’ll go up for a couple of weeks then come back down.

Personally I don’t like saying that players who suddenly get 100’s a couple of weeks in a row are about to explode. I’d rather get a player who has been getting progressively better over 3 or 4 weeks.

Ed Says: 7:32 am, June 19th, 2007

Ian: I think Petterd had a better BE when he started, but -112 would be right up there.

Ari Says: 7:58 am, June 19th, 2007

nathan bock 98. ABOUT BLOODY TIME

Todd Says: 8:27 am, June 19th, 2007

NGB’s break was much, much worse than Newmans.
Hence the quicker recovery.

“Kynan Says: 4:51 am, June 19th, 2007

Possibly the dumbest thing i’ve ever read.

james Says: 11:48 am, June 19th, 2007

In the week off, u guys should do some mid-year team ratings to fill in some time…

steve Says: 12:00 pm, June 19th, 2007

anyone noticed that peter bell has been quietly dominating last few weeks. bargain for those of us that got on him at about 310k

Jazz Says: 12:25 pm, June 19th, 2007

Footy is becoming faster and faster as the years go on…

One reason why Varcoe still plays and Hawkins gets sent back to the reserves, is they’re after the speed he’s got. Hawkins, as massive as he is, just doesn’t get the 1 on 1s that he’d thrive in, and more often than not, the ball is falling to ground, which gives the likes of Varcoe plenty of cracks. Fevola, Hall, Brown, Lloyd… they’re all too slow for the modern game, or their midfield supply just isn’t up to speed.

Buddy’s got the athleticism, the speed which is why he’s been doin better than roughead, even though he was a lower pick.

But what would i know, I’m just a kid =]

ken Says: 3:07 pm, June 19th, 2007

fev isnt dominating because pagan is filtering a lot of the forward ball through other players, that was evident on fri.

JB can get double/tripled every week cos the lions have no other forward options (he needs bradshaw!)

barry hall is just having a mare and hawkins is a first year key position, those positions take much more time to grow into - need to learn how to play there

those are my thoughts. in any case you cant just say that the game has gotten materially quicker in one year so now fev and hall, JB who dominated last year are now redundant

haha buddy is doing better than roughhead because roughhead is gravy!

Ed Says: 2:35 am, June 20th, 2007

What do you guys think of Michael Wilson from Port? He come back from a chest injury so he’s quite cheap ($209k) but he’s been getting alright scores this year. I’ve only seen a few games where he’s played and he seesm to drift into the midfield a bit. Do you think it would be a good choice to trade him in or go for someone else like Johncock?

Pearl (from the Peninsula) Says: 2:45 am, June 20th, 2007

What do people think about richard hadley? another who’s coming back after a year on the sidelines, has he still got value in him?

Tom Says: 3:14 am, June 20th, 2007

Ed - I had Wilson last year, and he played as a stopper more often than attacking. That may have changed this season but I reckon there’s better and cheaper bets for your Backs.

Pearl - I’d shop Hadley off. He may rise further, but you don’t want to wait too long or you’ll miss out on some good cash-cow downgrades and good cheap-gun upgrades.

jdogin Says: 5:36 am, June 20th, 2007

what do u think about roo. do you think it is a risk to buy him. im obviously not going to get him this week (BE 160), but when he comes down in price will he be a good pick up or too much of a risk?

Ed Says: 6:33 am, June 20th, 2007

Thanks Tom.

Pearl - I’m going to sell Hadley at the end of this round. I think he might peak at around $250k and I don’t want to wait that long, considering he’s already at $224k with a BE of 71.

jdogin - It is a risk to get Riccuito considering how many matches he missed with a back injury. I’d wait for a bit of form or for him to get really cheap before I’d trade him in.

Anthony Says: 10:57 am, June 20th, 2007

Michale Wilson does seem to attack more this year. I had him for a few weeks before his injury and for his price he was getting nice scores 75 - 95. I wouldn’t get him this week but his BE should go down after next weeks game.

damo Says: 10:59 am, June 20th, 2007

do u think matt campbell for tredrea or nathan brown.. my 7th forward is killing me.. campbell is way to inconsistant.. after seeing tredders game i dunno.. bit of a risk on both but there isnt much of an option..

jdogin Says: 3:25 pm, June 20th, 2007

damo
i think that if you have enough trades then it is time to get tredrea, but if you dont then you will have to wait. give nathan brown a few weeks, he will come down in price coz he will not play full games, see if he is goin to be the old brown or just too much of a risk.

Macca Says: 4:11 am, June 21st, 2007

Damo - dont touch N Brown till at least rd 15. I wouldnt expect him to do much at all in the first few weeks of his return.

Tredrea is the smart choice. He can only get better and last week showed some positive signs.

Ari Says: 10:09 am, June 21st, 2007

is jimmy bartell the most consistent dream team plaer ever? would you expect judd to return to his brownlow winning form soon?

Ari

simon Says: 3:44 am, June 22nd, 2007

One K.Cornes might have something to say about being the most consistent dreamteam player ever. “Machine” comes to mind!

LukeHodge15 Says: 5:05 am, June 22nd, 2007

For people pondering Tredrea.

Look at players like Brerton & Carey. There bodies are just about shot by 28 and there output point scoring goes in2 freefall.

Tredrea is alright choice if u wanna gamble ur arse off. But a big pass for mine.

Booth Says: 8:31 am, June 22nd, 2007

hey does anyone know how long luke powers meant 2 b out for?

azz Says: 10:19 am, June 22nd, 2007

according to the brissy officials Luke Power is set to play next week against Port Adelaide. If he does not then he will play the week after.

1-2 weeks in summary.

Booth Says: 11:50 am, June 22nd, 2007

thankz mate
