Talking points: Round 9

by dreamteamhero.com.au | May 27th, 2007 | Comments : [40] | Categories: Talking Points.

Player of the week: Luke McPharlin (150)

No-one could top McPharlin’s Friday night game, where he pulled in a whopping amount of marks (from memory, around 20). I didn’t watch the game, and can’t give much context to McPharlin’s score except I haven’t seen him name in a single best players list so far. This means his dead-set excellent fantasy score is even better. Honourable mentions: Tarkyn Lockyer (150), Kane Cornes (142), Cameron Bruce (135), Stephen Gilham (121), Scott Lucas (138)

Biggest disappointment: Heath Shaw (46). From what I have heard, Shaw was tagged off half-back on Saturday night as the Lions sought to shut him out of it. It clearly worked – Shaw had a massive downer, and will sink in price over the coming weeks. Honourable mentions in this category go to Sam Mitchell (48), Lance Franklin (27), and Scott West, whose score of 65 is comparable in drop to every other one mentioned here.

Other points of interest:

Adam Goodes had a pretty convincing return to form against the Bulldogs, scoring 110, which will see his price rise to around $272k. That’s still a verrrry reasonable price for someone of his talent. Peter Everitt also had a return to form, scoring 91, although that may be due to the Dogs’ ruck division which was totally outclassed

Scott Pendlebury popped up with another 84, keeping up a super-consistent season. His lowest score so far has been 70-odd – that’s fantastic

Jimmy Bartel registered a very respectable 111, but it could have been far better after he was on 72 at half-time. It was a similar story everywhere across the ground – the Cats were ripping it til half-time and then faded somewhat. Matthew Stokes did really well with 94 (including seven tackles, which fantasy coaches love), and for Port Nathan Krakouer bagged 75 – his best game to date. Shaun Burgoyne, meanwhile, got 87 which is his best game in four weeks. He’s now marginally more expensive than Goodes, which is still ultra-cheap. Get on him

Brock McLean got an even hundred in his return to AFL for the Demons, an excellent effort in his first game back from injury. Ricky Petterd, meanwhile, got 55 which is his lowest score in four games so far. His price will still rise some, though

Shaun Higgins scored 18 the week after being nominated for the Rising Star award. Crash…

Kent Kingsley nabbed a so-so 60 points in his first AFL game, which is about what you could reasonably expect from the King. Any takers here? I think not…

Fev scored 58 in a very low-scoring game on Saturday afternoon. Nathan Basset, take a bow. Nick Dal Santo, the night before, scored 81 but it won’t stop his price falling away to $333k, which is pretty tempting if not for the cheaper players (Goodes, S. Burgoyne).

Sam Gilbert registered his second 90+ in a row, which means he has to score –73 next week to stay at the same price. This kid is looking fantastic – did anyone predict it? Any bets on how long it will last? For me, hmmm, not that long.

Finally, Kane Tenace scored 94 in the Cats’ win over Port Adelaide, which is his highest score ever. Now, this dude looks a bit ominous. He’s always been talented, but finally looks to have sorted out his kicking, and the results are showing. He racked up huge numbers in the VFL for a few weeks in a row earlier this year, and he may be just about to really turn the corner in AFL as well

Sam Gilbert is living proof that Goddard was not, in fact, finally living up to his #1 draft pick status. Anyone who plays as the loose man in the backline for St Kilda will get a ton of meaningless stats, be it Goddard or a newcomer like Gilbert… consider it the Joel Bowden Principle. Since Gilbert’s proven he can get as many kicks as Goddard in that spot, though, they may just keep him there when Goddard returns and give Goddard something more accountable to do. As a result, probably worth picking up before the price rises further unless your backline is stellar.

Justin Maguire Says: 9:13 pm, May 27th, 2007

I love you.

Have my babies.

James Says: 10:39 pm, May 27th, 2007

gilbert didn’t play loose in the backline…

Toby Says: 11:34 pm, May 27th, 2007

Exactly… he played through the centre mainly!
And if u watched the game at all, he actually played very well!! He’s grown up playing rugby, so is very very strong at the ball, so rakes in the points for tackles.
It actually seems to be Leigh Fisher who’s “replacing” Goddard… although, with Maguire, Maxy and Gram out, everyone seems to be replacing everyone in the Saints backline…

AdamG03 Says: 11:39 pm, May 27th, 2007

wish i jumped on gilbert instead of keeping a trade and riggio on my bench… *tear* lol

Darren Says: 12:05 am, May 28th, 2007

Probably a costly mistake Adam, I scored 1878 last week in DT with only 1 player not scoring in this weeks lineup, but I still made the upgrade with Gilbert and Jericho both coming in. Guys scoring near on 100 weekly for $100k are priceless in the long run!

ian Says: 8:09 am, May 28th, 2007

any comments on jake king, after beign named an emergency for the tigers at round one he’s been sitting on my bench since round 1, and with kerr’s suspension has been playing and scoreing aorund 80’s every week, and is now worth 205k, with a break even next week of -30odd… a candidate for bargain of the season?

Tom Says: 8:41 am, May 28th, 2007

Definitely a candidate. That’s an excellent idea, Ian, we may do a feature on that sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Jocko Says: 1:05 pm, May 28th, 2007

Monty, what’s happening with Xavier Ellis, will he be running around in the two’s for a while yet?

Will Says: 1:09 pm, May 28th, 2007

If you’re looking for a forward, Luke Jericho at Adelaide is a gun and still very cheap.
Good work with the webstie boys.

Toby Says: 3:07 pm, May 28th, 2007

Does anyone know how Chapman is going??
Will he be back this week??
With the cash i have this week, i could upgrade one of my forwards (Alwyn Davey i think) for up to $400,000… any suggestions??

Ive been looking at maybe Lucas or Chapman… any thoughts or suggestions??

Btw, my current forward line is:
Brad Johnson
Matthew Pavlich
Ryan O’Keefe
Travis Cloke
Nick Riewoldt
Nathan Bock
Aaron Edwards
Em:
Alwyn Davey
Jarrod Harbrow

Cheers, Toby

Graham Says: 4:22 pm, May 28th, 2007

Toby,

I would upgrade Davey and leave Edwards as your emergency.

Wait until Friday to make your trade. If Chapman is named, take him. Otherwise I would save a bit of cash and take J Brown…

bob Says: 4:33 pm, May 28th, 2007

is there anyone i can get for Colm Begley (bakman) who is currently at $169,800 atm
and my midfield looks like this:

J.Bartel
S.West
D.Swan
B.Stanton
T.Varcoe
R.Petterd

mabus Says: 4:33 pm, May 28th, 2007

no mention of mitch clark after scoring 100 in his first game this year.

Doma Says: 4:50 pm, May 28th, 2007

anyone know if i should get shaun mcmanus or not? i really rate him as a player but not sure if his football skills will turn into great dreamteam scores.

any advice?

Chris Says: 5:08 pm, May 28th, 2007

Yehh good question Doma, Mcmanus is reasonable consistent and could be worth a gamble, also check out Rowan Jones

Tom N Says: 5:27 pm, May 28th, 2007

Bob - for a $169k backman, try Jesse Smith ($171k, with a break-even of minus 6). However, if you free up cash that’s sitting on your bench, you could upgrade Begley into a more potent scorer.

Mabus - yup, no mention of Mitch Clark, who actually scored 77 (we’re talking Dream Team, not Supercoach).

bob Says: 6:25 pm, May 28th, 2007

thanks but ive already got jesse smith and i was looking it up before and i might get shannon watt from the kangaroos 173,000

Tom Says: 6:46 pm, May 28th, 2007

Bob - rather than Watt, have you thought about Darren Glass who’s $155k or thereabouts? He may not score well, but at least he’ll play every week.

Alex Says: 8:16 pm, May 28th, 2007

I’m not sure how you could rate Mcmanus as a player… or in DT haha, averaging 50 bar two fluke 100’s.

I have 174k cash in the bank, and want to upgrade Gibbs and Brennan. If I picked up Gilbert, I would be able to get just about any midfielder. On the other hand, if i pick up S.Burgoyne or Goodes, I could get any backman.

I’m also thinking of leaving Chad Cornes for one more week while his shocker score is still in calculations, then pick him up for brennan next week.

Decisions decisions…

Dub Says: 8:54 pm, May 28th, 2007

I picked up Gilbert after round 2 and saw his first 2 games, the kid has real talent. Toby, nice forward line mate, def trade Davey, i reckon he has had his run. Jericho top value and if you watch him play he looks to have a good footy brain and solid too.

> Goodes and Lade are cheap stars if you want to upgrade and haven’t got cash.
> Jericho, Morton, Houli and Bizzell will be good investments in value if they can keep it up and it looks like Bizzell and Jericho will stay.. not sure about Morton.
> Lewis and Johnson if you have the cash (consistent every week)

And finally to my ‘time to trade’ for this week. Most of us would’ve picked up Davey at the start of the season. He is $140k and lost ground for the first time this week. He got concussed on Saturday night and with Jericho looking good and sure to increase further in value, i’d bank yourself $65k.

Brad Says: 9:22 pm, May 28th, 2007

Nigel Lappin has also had a good couple of games since returning from injury. Not bad value at around $260k, and he has a very low BE this week so will go up in value.

However, as a long term prospect (read I only have 4 trades left this season) would we all agree that Goodes is a better option?

Nick Says: 3:22 am, May 29th, 2007

Hey Ian I’m also really happy with Jake King.

Like you, he’s on my bench and playing for Kerr.

I am thinking of bringing him on to the field though and upgrading Giansiracusa to a top 5 centre

My centres go

Judd, Kerr, Salopek, Pearce, Knights, Giansiracusa, King (emerg.)

Ari Says: 8:10 am, May 30th, 2007

okay i need help here and need it as soon as possible. My centre line has room for improvement and i want to buy K.Kornes. To do that i will need to sell Buddy Franklin for Jericho and then trade a bad performing, certain to go down in prive Adam Cooney. Should i do this? need help.

My centre line is:

Bartell, west, reily, gibbs, rodan, cooney. My emergency is selwood.

My forward line is shocking:

Lloyd, Johnson, Dale thomas, Bock, Franklin, Pavlich, Davey. Emergency = campell

Dogez Says: 8:16 am, May 30th, 2007

catters are gonna pump st kilda this week

ian Says: 8:31 am, May 30th, 2007

nick, yeah i’m also considering getting rid of one of a midfielder, clinton young, and keepign king in the starting line-up, just wanna wait until andrew browne returns from injury to make sure i have one playing emergency…
does anyone know when he will be coming back???

will Says: 9:52 am, May 30th, 2007

hi guys i’m upgrading rischitelli this week in my mids. Who should i get Goodes or Shaun Burgoyne? who do yo think will be the best short and long term decision?

Simon Says: 9:52 am, May 30th, 2007

Be very wary of the Jericho pick. He’s been inconsistent in the past and Adelaide still have some stars to come back in

dean Says: 5:02 am, May 31st, 2007

what do you guys reckon of buddy franklin?? ive got him in the DT but is he worth keeping?? i have only 9 trades left and thinking of getting rid of embley for chad cornes as he is a generally reliable performer and embley usually has a bad run with injuries! i think i need to pick up cornes this week as his price will hover due to his BE, any suggestions?

Tom N Says: 6:30 am, May 31st, 2007

Chad’s price will fall, Dean, since his breakeven is 155. Have no fear!

Dennis Says: 8:07 am, May 31st, 2007

Who should i get for jordan mcmahon?

Toby Says: 8:31 am, May 31st, 2007

Tahdg Kennelly, assuming he gets over his virus this week

Toby Says: 10:48 pm, May 31st, 2007

Or stick with Mcmahon… he’s back this week…

Graham Says: 3:55 am, June 1st, 2007

keep mcmahon forsure Dennis. He is a consistent performer. I wouldnt waste a trade on him

Toby Says: 10:14 am, June 1st, 2007

Quick question -
im trying to finalise my starting line-up…
Should i put Jesse Smith or Sam Gilbert on my bench?? One gets to play, the other will be an emergency… both are listed as Backs, tho, Smith has been selected as a follower, and Gilbert to play centre…

My backs look like:

Tarkyn Lockyer
Dustin Fletcher
Andrew McLeod
Lindsay Gilbee
Jed Adcock
Justin Koschitzke

Then… either Gilbert or Smith

and Ellis

Cheers, Toby

Andrew Says: 10:28 am, June 1st, 2007

Just wondering what everyone’s opinion on who’s the better pick up between McMahon (Kangaroos) and Frawley (Demons) they’ll only be on the bench because I’m using them so i can upgrade Cooney to Bartel. Out of the two who do u reckon will play more games and score better.

Toby Says: 10:34 am, June 1st, 2007

Is mitch thorp an option from Hawks… he’s due to play soon, and when he does, he’ll romp it in!!

jonno Says: 2:53 pm, June 1st, 2007

who would be my best choice of a pickup this week, troy selwood, adam goodes or shaun burgoyne

Tom Says: 9:11 pm, June 1st, 2007

Andrew - get Frawley. Haven’t seen much of McMahon, but Frawley was impressive in the pre-season, and with Rivers’ injuries should get a solid run.

Toby - yup, he’ll get a game soon. I thought they may have given him his debut last week in Tassie, but it wasn’t the case. Nevertheless I am positive Thorp will play soon.

Jonno - I was tossing up between Goodes and Burgoyne too, and chose the Burger. It was very hard to pick, but my instincts told me that Burger has more improvement to come this year than Goodes.

Jeraldo Says: 12:05 pm, June 2nd, 2007

not sure where else to post this, but have you considered making a comments feature on the Game scores pages? i think it would be pretty cool. thanks
